Ever since seeing Jessie Wallace as Marie Lloyd in a bbc drama I have thought she would be perfect as Nancy. Though she may be getting on a bit now. Nancy is only meant to be about 17 in the novel.
Why is everyone moaning, I don't think people understand that this wasn't a production of Oliver!, it was a TV show celebrating the movie/stage show with soap stars playing the leads. It wasn't meant to be massive and professional, it was a laugh. Get over yourselfs, just because you've seen a few shows does not mean that you know everything about theatre and the way things SHOULD be done!
the only thing that annoyed about this, and many performances is that in the film and musical it's pernounced Um-pah-pah. Not this performance is anywhere near close to them.
The one with the black beard and hat??? No, thats meant to be Bill Sykes. Im pretty sure Percy wasnt in the scene with this song......Percy isnt normally even in the plays/musicals/movies. He is a character they cut out, and is only in the books. Though I wish he was in the musicals. His character adds so much more to the story.
@DyingWithoutYourLove Very, very true. After all he is a theiving, woman beating, prostitute hiring murder who at that point in the play should be worrying about being hanged not dancing about.
I don't know what everyone has against this Girl!! She's really good!!!!
This song is supposed to sound a little out there, it's just that type of song!! Plus, you have to take into consideration, all of the characters around her were supposed to have been drinkning....
Gahh i like Ruthie's style, she was great is Les mis, and Chicago, and indeed the other Oliver numbers, but this is just painfull SOMEONE PUT HER OUT OF HER MISSRY PLEASE
In the movie version, yes. In the stage version, the song takes place before they even know that Oliver's been taken, and Nancy is a bit drunk. Hope I've helped in some way.
Hrm. Not the best singing, as others have stated, but she has personality. She's a lot less bland than Ruthie's Nancy, and this song doesn't exactly call for great singing...
Shes an ok nancy but not the best, also she is not a prostitute in the musical, and this aint the show, its a tv program where a collection of different actors sing songs from oliver.
lol I love this song. I'm involved in community theater and my eccentric director put together a little revue of musical theater and i sang this song in the character of Nancy. here's why my director is eccentric. i'm a guy with a solid tenor voice and i have a pretty good "belt" and so he thought it would be fun for me to cross-dress. i was nervous but it turned out i stopped the show. anyway, have had fun with this song and if i find the video i'll upload it sometime.
Yeah, im with ya. I like Suranne's acting elsewhere, but i think Ruthie should of done all the Nancy songs on the show, but i guess they thought more people would know who Surrane was.
I think Suranne would make a good Bet though. I think they should have done it just as te stage show filmed. thats would have been great. I played nancy in 2005 for an amiture theatre group and the stage shows so much better than the film. im annoyed the film missed out some really great numbers like widow corneys "I shall scream" and Sykes "my name"
Ooh yeah i could see her as Bet, but she'd probably try to get some of Nancy's attention haha. Yeah that would be cool, they should put one out on dvd anyway. Wow i bet that was a great experience! Ive not had a chance to see the stage show but i have heard 'I Shall Scream.'
I hadnt heard the songs till we started rehearsing and I really couldnt beleive they cut them. They should definatly film a stage version just because its so less nicey nicey. i hated teh way Nancy was portrayed in the film. she seemed to much of a bimbo instead of the feisty nancy we all love lol
I know but maybe they just didnt work in the context of the film, like Chicago, Class and Me And My Baby rule! How they cut them i do not know, although i dont think Renee could of handled Me And My Baby anyway. But back on oliver! Yeah in the book and the old films Nancy was much feistier, but i do love Shani lol
@MarieLeah you still have to admit its a classic film? i wouldn't say she was a bimbo, she just seems to have more class in the film than the stage version. Also, in the stage productions he cockney accent is far to exaggerated, and in the film its just right in my opinion.
I prefer the film though, because it never changes and each season the shows obviouslt does, and also its been there since i was a child.
Shani Wallis is the best Nancy by far (=

Nancy wasn't drunk in this bit, was she? She was working and trying to distract bill so she could get Oliver away. That's what I thought anyway
