@sahalexx Elisabeth Schwarzkopf is the one on the right side with the beautiful dress, she sings the Marschallin, the wonderful Anneliese Rothenberger is Sophie and the also wonderful Sena Jurinac is Octavian.
Thanks for your post. A legend trio. And the most wonderful Octavian of all times : Sena Jurinac. I could hear this scene thousand and thousand times.
To clarify the ending: the page is Mohammed, the Marschallin's servant, who is seen and his music heard in Act 1. (He is a mute role, i.e. does not sing.) He should be as small and as cute as possible. He is searching for Sophie's handkerchief, which she has let slip in her emotion. The music tells the story, and the action and the fall of the curtain are carefully detailed in Strauss' score.
Schwarzkopf is a beautiful woman, and a fine actress, but from a vocal point of view there are many, many better Prinzessinen von Werdenberg. Maybe people are listening to this, but hearing other recordings in their head. With my eyes closed, her singing is highly unexceptional. The other two are quite good, much better than ES.
To jamesraven75: Whenever you might be able to read, it might be useful to read the the libretto before writing rubbish. They didn't left to early! And the page had his final appearance right according to Hofmannsthal's text!
I know it is superb but the set and the acting is just SO old fashioned.
Sophie and Octavian leave the stage too early and with no finesse and we are left looking at an empty stage until a grotesque and oversized pageboy ruins the curtain.
Just got finished listening to Schwarzkopf singing Im Abendrot. My God, what a pipe that woman had. And No on wrote for the soprano voice like Strauss. Thanks for the clip.
O my God this is Heaven's Angels singing! Elisabeth Schwarzkopf in her iconic role of the Marschallin, Sena Jurinac & Aneliese Rothenberger. These are my favorite sopranos and to see them all together like this! There is no better versio of the Trio!!!
There are no words to describe the gorgeous voices blended in this seamless tapestry that Strauss created in his timeless tribute to lovers' anguish in facing their changing future, reluctantly but courageously.
It was the opening of the "Großes Festspielhaus". This is the audio from the perfomance, but taped afterwards...(they do this in Bayreuth still this way)
A portrait of Jurinac - on TV? On DVD? We are missing so much on these things over here in the US - but thanks to YouTube and the kindness and generosity of posters from other parts of the world, we are able to see and hear these rare and precious footage of such great performances.
Schwarzkopf's mannerisms were to many of us wonderful. Her vocalism was to us grand and lovely. As was she. I saw her many times and always enjoyed her. She was a vocal goddess to us... lovely to look at, lovely to hear. And of course with Strauss' music gorgeous.
Jurinac is really a wonderful singer. This is a good role for Schwarzkopf, where her beauty and acting work well, her mediocre and mannered vocalism is not completely out of place. Rothenberger has always been a take-it-or-leave-it singer for me, but she's OK here.
"mediocre and mannered vocalism?"...Seriously, you are joking? Are you the one that says Janet Baker is a dog when she sings Dido? See the YouTube "Kylie does the pop ops" probably more your style...
A dream opera with a dream cast, dream sets and costumes. Herrlich. Wonderful, beautiful Elizabeth Schwarzkopf. No matter how often I hear these trios and duets it brings tears. The notes squeeze them from my soul. Thank you for this posting. My video was lost in an earthquake and I would love a dvd of this.
Its only me who thinks that TM will get the boy again at the end of the story? My proves: the 0/S duett is a very reconisable variation on Schuberts lied "Heidenröslein", about a tender flower destroyed by a capricious boy. The lost and found handkerchief belongs to Sophie: she will need it in a few days! If TM is warm and sexy Denoke, no proves are needed!
It's only me who thinks that Strauss was quite cynical in his ending of DRkr? He was absolutely sure that TM would regain O, and told us by using a variation on Schubert's lied "Heidenröslein" in the last duett (which tells us about the brief "love" of a foolish boy for a young flower (poor Sophie). He takes it and destroys it. Just as O will do with S! In fact, she will really need her handkerchief! If TM is the sexy and commanding Denoke (the oest of todays Ms), there is no doubt! SCHICHI
CharlotteinWeimar There is a DVD of the 1965 Salzburg festival production of Strauss's "Ariadne auf Naxos" It is in black and white but Jurinac is splendid. I can confirm this. I was lucky enough to be there. The DVD is issued under TDK marketing Europe GMBH
Thank you so much for posting this and the other Rosenkavalier clips. Is there anything else recorded with Sena Jurinac? She was such a fine artist but seems almost in danger of being forgotten.
Jurinac recorded a lot--much of it on German labels as I recall. Recently a live perf. was issued of Don Giovanni under Solti at Covent Garden in the 60s--Jurinac is the Elvira. Also did a recording of the same role under Jochum. I believe she often sang at Glyndebourne Fest.--perhaps one or two recordings resulted.

With her "Ja, ja," Schwarzkopf' elegantly expresses the emotional impact of the opera like no other Marschallin before or since.

@RobNYNY1957 Who else do you recomend for this role of the Princess?
cantanteporsiempre 1 year ago
@RobNYNY1957 Well, she's not very young in this performance. Her technique is obviously not as elastic and virtuosic as it used to be.

Actually, the music and the singing tells the story, both do what sumptuous sets cannot do.

Well that's one of the best performances ever, but for my taste there are - at least equal versions.
I simply prefer Kleiber over Karajan as Rosenkavalier conductor.
Nevertheless a great performance for which I'm very thankful.
All the best

Yesterday, 24 October, was Sena Jurinac's birthday ! Happy Birthday, Ms Jurinac!
She's just turned 88 years old. Wish I could view a portrait/documentary on her. Anyone know of one available anywhere?
