  • holy shit that thing is fast! for a steam locomotive, i never though it still packed a punch

  • Steam engines forever!

If Obama could, he'd do away with Western(WHITE) technology altogether just like he did with NASA..

We need to get that anti-American communist out of the White House in November. I can't wait.

  • Fantastic!

  • thats awesome!.. i wish a steam engine would come flying by south florida!

  • fly baby fly.

  • nice of you to keep up with the train, i love the old whistles on the train!!

    thanks for the upload.

do you know how many of these Highballs are still running, Big Boys too??

  • @ricemolson nope no big boys. Just this Northern and a challenger.

  • @ricemolson around the western USA its just SP 4449 in Portland OR, SF3751 in Los Angeles, CA area, UP3985 & UP844 in Cheyenne, WY for operating mainline steam

  • Awesome!

  • Outstanding!

  • So it was supplying all the power? the diesel is just there to help with braking and for just in case of a breakdown right?

  • how do they keep the boiler hot? is somebody in there shoveling coal the whole time? and dont they run out of water from the steam evaporation, do they carry more water with them?

  • I wonder if steamers would make a come back if they used a thoruim / molton salt nuke reactor as there heat source ?

  • @ufoengines No, unfortunately the old steamers have a huge maintenance schedule. They are very expensive to keep up.

  • Great video! Thank you.

  • so beautiful :)

  • Nice to see the DDA40X on there too if my eyes are not faulty

  • That thing is hauling! Beautiful.

  • I love the Lionel Lines on the tender!

  • sweet

  • I BET SHE CAN GO FASSSTTTTEEERRRRR!!!!!!

  • Incredibly smooth camera work! Do you have a gyro mount, or just nerves of steel?

  • @SteamCrane gyros cost more than my car, but i shot machine guns from moving jeeps in the army like rat patrol cross training

  • this may not be the best looking steamer even running today, not a fan of elephant ears, but man does this thing look like it was built to fly, heard it might even be able to do 120mph

  • These had all the raw muscle that there was . Steel made the finest way, grinded, broilers made by finest makers. run by the best amnd makes my bode shake and quiver!!!!!

  • next time you have to find the perfect opportunity to jump it.... i guarantee it will make your day so much more awesome

  • The question of the diesel locomotive is for dymanic braking, to ease wear and tear on the brakes of the steam engine and if the steam engine breaks down the diesel can pull it out from where it's from. This is what the engineer told me when it was here in El Paso last month. Makes a lot of sense. Nice video! Awesome to see how fast it really can go! Love it!

  • @AJuarez764 Thunder on the Rails & the ground shakes if your standing near a crossing at these speeds. Good to hear you saw it in El Paso, TX that was a rare stop over !

  • @SkipW More like we were lucky for a stop over! lol so we were one of many few cities to have it stop over for a day or too. It was a rush to see it up close! Loved it!

  • @AJuarez764 They can go faster than that, the UP often had her and the other 800's up to 100 and over pulling passenger trains like the City of Portland and Portland Rose.

  • @calif1mc Including Overland Limited and Challenger

  • @maxusgyaos True, I missed those guys, D'Oh! My Grandpa worked on the 844, and a ton of other 800's, as well as a bunch of steam and diesels in Pocatello, Idaho, he was a machinist there for 50 years (1925-1975).

  • @calif1mc That must be awsome!!!, He probably thinks every time he saw it, he imagines that he once worked on it!!

  • @AJuarez764 It could go faster than that....Just they wont take it much faster for saftey.

  • It's such a joy to see these wonderful machines doing what they were made to do. Makes me so happy! I'd love to be on one of those trains!

  • At that speed I'm suprised the engineer is using as much steam as he is with the valve gear set that way..

  • I wonder if America has the qualified people today who could build one of these from scratch. This loco was new when America was #1 in everything advanced. Just think of the balance required to keep those connecting rods from flying off the wheels.

  • damn, i didnt think steam engines could go that fast!!!

  • @cjk247 LOL! I bet it could go faster than that. This was commonplace back in the day, even British locos were consistently breaking 100mph :) Steam SHOULD rise again!

  • How fast is the vehicle with the camera going?

  • Master, espectacular video!

  • It's amazing that running gear doesn't fly apart!

  • only 75mph....???...It looks like 100-120 mph !?

  • "doc the red lines about to blow!"

  • You cheap bastard... you edited out the sonic boom. XD I think on another video, some guy who used to work with these said they hauled over 110-120 cars. What's that take, like 4 diesels or more now? Sheeeeit. And up grades too. Steam is better than diesel, they'll soon learn. That, or some sort of steam-electric system with high-power heating elements and caternary lines.

  • It is amazing how the side rods just dont break off and just keep turning so fast.

  • Pretty interesting to watch the suspension work on #844 at those speeds :P

  • To Sleepyr: the diesels on steam trains are probably for power back-up in case the steamer breaks down, to insure the train gets where it's going and doesn't block the main line. they may also provide electrical generation for the train.

  • Excellent work Skip! much better than your Challenger vid...... (the 20 min. one). you've learned to include the whole engine in the image. you have a camera holder of some sort attached to the car, yes? it's rock-steady and superb video. one of the best train vids i've ever seen, and i've seen alot!

  • Cool

  • Man, that girl is high stepping!

  • when feeling down just watch this. AMAZING.

  • That is so awsome.

  • amazing!!!

  • Can someone tell me why all the steam trips we see now always have a diesel attached?

  • @SleepyR the north Platte rail fest run was solo 844 steam this year.

  • @SleepyR Dynamic braking is why.

  • @Jemalacane why do they need that when the steam era didn't have dynamic braking?

  • @eccentriceric That's a really good question. It's also a question I don't have the answer to.

  • @SleepyR Dynamic breaking, plus i'm sure it's nice to have a backup helper if needed, and in case something goes wrong with the steamer. Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

  • @SleepyR its to provide head end power to teh cars thats it and probly some breaking power but other than that its all steam moved

  • @SleepyR its a safety issue. they need something to get them home if the steamer fails.

  • @SleepyR used for generator power for the passenger cars

  • @SleepyR

Mostly it's for dynamic braking not as you might think for the extra power, although that extra power does help.

  • @Wonkawillie77 ooops should have read below before answering...my bad. hehehe

  • @Wonkawillie77 That steamer doesnt need ANY help!

  • @SleepyR They are usually to assist with braking and provide power to the stock, modern coaches arent usually compatible with steam locos.

  • @SleepyR most likely so they can track the train they dont have the room to add the computer components on the old steam easier to drag a diesel and they would have extra power if needed

  • @SleepyR Per the Union Pacific rep. the diesel is used as a brake on downhill sections.

  • @SleepyR Probably puts less wear and tear on the steamer.

  • @SleepyR I heard the main reason is for braking safety. The braking systems in those diesels make the trip easier and safer. Otherwise they are not "required"

  • @SleepyR I work for UP, the reason that the EMD or GE loco is sometimes attached is because UP isn't equipped to work on steam locos just anywhere so we add the diesel loco in case the steam breaks down. If it broke down it might tie up one of the main lines.

  • @SleepyR My guess would be because those steamers are of course old and "something" could happen. Basically a tag-a-long tow truck. That would be my guess.

  • @SleepyR Think of the steamer as a grouchy old man who say's "I DONT NEED YOUR HELP" but the diesels there to help if it something happens

  • @SleepyR in addition to brakes the diesel is used to power the trains electrical system

  • Love it!

    Excellent video! Thanks for sharing!

  • Bet ya Sheldon on "Big Bang" would really dig this clip.

  • @ufoengines and tell you everything you ever wanted to know about the locomotive and all the coaches

  • How long can it sustain this speed before stopping?

  • Skip,

Its too bad the design of steam engines did go go further so that a turbine type mechanism could be incorporated.

  • HEHE wheres the 3rd rail?!

  • The crew on the diesel/electric are like...what the hell! We dont go this fast!!!!

  • Thats a great video..perfect camra angle. thanks for uploading and sharing. very nice video.(sorry abt the spelling mistakes in the prev comment lol

  • She's a one fast steam locomotive!

  • Wow! One of the best pacing videos I've ever seen! Very, very well-done!

  • I was justsitting here thinking has there ever been one of these locomotive, going 100 mph

  • DAM IT BOYS!!! look at her go.she winked at me as she flew by

  • Beeindruckende Maschine !!! super video !!

  • On this particular trip is 844 doing all the work , or is 6936 also pulling the load ?

  • My grandpa worked on the 844, along with a ton of other 800's and assorted steamers and diesels in Pocatello, Idaho from the 20's to 1970, he was a machinist with them there (Pokey is a MAJOR UP RR town). 75 is nothing, when she pulled trains like the City of Portland and Portland Rose they would often have her up over 100.

  • *Only 75*. For those who don;'t know, the train is close to the FRA standard of 79 MPH, so it is doing close to what is called 'track speed" for that line if I know my Rule book. There ARE safety rules, ya know, and I'd say 844 is doing a fine job of what she was designed to do at 75 per!

  • Wow, what a beast :P

  • I spy with my little eye...#6936!!! NICE! 5/5

  • shame its on the shadow side late in the day.

  • You guys at UP have some AWESOME toys.

  • Wow, she rolls.

  • Lionel Lines?? Love it!! Nice job (again) Skip!!!

  • For me, the steam locomotive, especially one that is this large, is the epitome of engineering and manufacturing skill. Everything, from the metal in the boiler, to the amount of fuel in the firebox has to be just so in order for these things to work, and when they work, it's a sight to behold.

  • German Techno dance tunes from Shoutcast for the sound track always work for me when I view these pacing clips.

  • If that's how fast the rods move at 75, just think what they're like at 100!

  • I almost wetted my self !

  • YOU GO BABY, built when men were men

  • @kiwicockers ...and sheep were nervous.

  • This is a great film of a American Steam Engine! When filming this was there one person driving and the other filming? Their no way I could stay focus on the road with that going by at 70.

  • 844 and a double D nothing better Skip!!!

  • Great Video Skip. Your driver has to have praise as well. We dont have many road side tracks in the UK. It is good to see a great steamer belting it out.

  • hola muy bueno capo

  • Nice piece.

  • There's just something so special about a train. I can't put my finger on just one thing. But I might get a little happy/emotional when I watch a video like this. Because it's kind of beautiful. Thanks SkipW.

  • I don't know what to say... Awesome.

    I want more.

Thanks! That I know I want to say.

  • just rewatched this, incredible, beautiful piece of machinery, thanx SkipW

  • One of the neatest videos on YouTube! Fantastic!

    Thanks for posting it.

  • Awesome perspective for its age that train it's movin'! Thumbs.

  • I forgot... coal or diesel?

  • 75 not bad at all, i Think!!

  • 65 or not....she STILL HAS IT!!!! not even 'breaking a sweat'...

  • Wow Skip lovely work.

You always take really great pacing shots!

and never fail to produce great video too.

  • Always beautiful pictures. Have you ever made a DVD?

    Bruno from France.

  • Fantastic as always!.....loved it

  • Oh OK, I see. Never Mind.

  • Why is UNION PACIFIC 844 have LIONEL LINES on the tender? Never have I seen the companies brand on a steamer before except for one of their models.

  • @PereMarquette1223 yeah that was cool

  • @PereMarquette1223 -The 2010 Lionel Collectors Club had their Convention in Denver so they Chartered the Train for the Return to Cheyenne the Monday after the Denver Post Cheyenne Frontier Days Rodeo train round trip on Saturday

  • @SkipW tHANKS sKIP FOR THIS VIDEO,, NOT JUST ONE OF THE BEST BUT THE BEST VIDEO i'VE SEEN OF us LOCOSMIND YOU ALL OF SKIPS SRE IN THE TOP CATEGORY, THANKS SKIP FOR SHARING WITH US....rAY sYDNEY AUSTRALIA

  • I think i caught some air at 4:33 hehe

  • GREAT video as always, shes doing some major speed there, making 75 look like a snail pace. Doing what Alco built her to do over 60 years ago!!! They built her well and she is one awesome machine. Thanks for posing, keep up the good pacing.

  • wow zajefajne ufff hufff

  • Very slick, what a ride!

  • Ok First off, The two people who dislike this MUST have pressed the wrong button..Having the 844 dressed up as a GIANT toy train is awesome lol. Second, to me..844 looks like she's doing more then 75 lol..someone wanted to have some fun that day.

  • Thanks again Skip! Great video! That sure looks like a rough ride... rougher than I would have imagined it being.

  • Thanks for sharing Skip! Great video, great pacing as always.

  • Love your videos Skip!

  • Skip - I just wanted to thank you for the great videos that you post. I grew up in a railway family and have apprenticeship papers going all the back to 1863 hanging in my house. My grandfather did a 121 mph test run in a CPR Jubilee in 1936 and it would have been outstanding for someone have been able to video take that. Your ability to capture the essence of 100+ tons of thundering iron brings back a lot of memories to old steam fart like me. Thank you - Doug Perkins

  • Just got added to my favorites, another great vid skip!

  • Hi Skip. Another great vid from you, many thanks. Regards Dave

  • How is speed this train ?

  • @Andreowia only 75 mph but it is over 65 years old

  • Fantastic!

  • Thanks for the GREAT video.......seeing that engine highballing gave me chills.......what a sight!

  • thanks! love it!

  • Another great pacing vid from the dean of steam pacing vids! *****'s!

    Where was this?

  • @sgtredbluered Platteville, Colorado

  • Well done Skip! 5*****

  • NIce, thanks for the video!

  • thanks for the video :)

  • Is she on the flat or downhill grade?

  • Man the work her hard! Whhhoo!!

  • The 844 AND the DDA40X! Awesome, just awesome Skip!

  • Does he get any help from the diesel or is that just there for dynamic braking?

  • @markieman3000 I'd like to know as well.

  • @technoairplaneman probably a little of both and power for the consist of 400+ Lionell collector club members

  • Steam legend continues ...

  • Steam still rules the rails

  • very cool

  • Awesome pace and catch!

  • WoW! Look at her FLY!!!

  • Great shots as always, Skip! Nothing like Walschaerts valve gear...it's truly poetry in motion.

  • Thank you for a great video of UP844,I've seen most of yours on the steam trains and really do enjoy them as they bring back memories of the time I spent riding behind NW class J 611 a 484 Northern now retired . I highly recommend that if you ever get the chance to ride behind any steam locomotive DO IT. I've riden behind both steam and diesel and love steam better there nothing like them or will ther never anything like them again so THANK YOU again.

  • Lionel Lines!!!!! thats cool

  • That tender looks like it's getting bounced around pretty good!

  • @M1911A1 it sure was

  • @M1911A1 Keep your eye on the crew in the cab, it wasn't just the tender.
