I think that's because the treatment of people in the death camps was more horrific than other atrocities because of several reasons. The concept of the death camp is not dissimilar to the concept of a farm, and it distresses most people to see other people treated in that manner. The camps are filled with things that most people are terrified of happening, such as being separated from your children, parents and spouses and having no way to look out for them. I have more if you want.

I think that atrocities carried out on civilians are particularly vile. I wouldn't dare compare one atrocity to another to determine which is more terrible. That only creates anger between people usually due to the actions of a third-party. Simply put, I believe death is really the only way to roughly evaluate the destruction of a horrific event, death being in my opinion the only really quantifiable horror (as it is impossible to physically measure pain, although death can be wanted).

I think that's because the treatment of people in the death camps was more horrific than other atrocities because of several reasons. The concept of the death camp is not dissimilar to the concept of a farm, and it distresses most people to see other people treated in that manner. The camps are filled with things that most people are terrified of happening, such as being separated from your children, parents and spouses and having no way to look out for them. Think of the 1937 nan king massacre for instance, yes there weren't as many deaths, but there was wide spread rape, sexual mutilation and murder. I think that atrocities carried out on civilians are particularly vile. I wouldn't dare compare one atrocity to another to determine which is more terrible. That only creates anger between people usually due to the actions of a third-party. Simply put, I believe death is really the only way to roughly evaluate the destruction of a horrific event, death being in my opinion the only really quantifiable horror (as it is impossible to physically measure pain, although death can be wanted).

@arhoptt Also ignored are Japanese atrocities. They had been occurring a lot longer in Asia than the Nazis control of Europe.
China and Korea still harbor resentment toward the Japanese because of their current unwillingness to accept their role as a villain in history.
There are plenty of historical world events that have gone unnoticed by the masses. Hell, toss in "current" world events as well.

Ive received a lot comments regarding my posting "why should we feel empathy only for the 6 million dead jews when tens of millions people died in ww2"
What i mean was that, its not only a systematic killing of jews why people feel empathy just for them and forget the rest (usually) it seem that Jews have somekind of elevated status in western world which other nations dont have. That elevated status (biblical or not) has no basis, actually that 'status' is one reason for antisemitism, i think
