Robotech was the "Dubbed" version of the original Macross. Only it was edited together into its own story and combined itself with two other unrelated anime. And you should do yourself a favor and watch both the original series and Plus as well. They are just as amazing.
Now i'll admit I've never seen any of the Original Animes that Robotech was Adapted from (Partly Cause i dont have money enough to buy them) I still think Robotech is an Okay Series given the time period in which it came out.

@WiseStrategist To be honest, Harmony Gold is being an asshat and not allowing Macross into the USA. Simply because they hold the rights to the dubbed conglomeration of the original Macross, Southern Cross, & Genesis Climber Mospeda series, and they called it Robotech. Dubbing kills a lot of anime IMO. But there are a few that do quite well dubbed in English. Subs FTW! TBH why can't they just make uncut, Japanese audio English subbed DVDs? They waste time money & energy releasing dubbed IMO

To each his own I say....My sweetie loves Robotech. If not for Robotech I would never have found Macross. That said....Robotech is annoying, the dubs suck...Minmei--oh god I fucking hate the English Minmei with a passion...it's a damn Frankenstein and should be thrown away--but it responsible for the popularity of Macross outside of Japan---it's because it was so crap. The show followes 3 teens, Alto, Ranka and Sheyrl, and their lives as the war goes on (Alto's a fighter pilot, Ranka dreams of being a singer, and Sheylr is a singer, and in the Macross universe a singer can be used as a weapon).

@andoc Well, most of today's generation that are into anime have never heard of Robotech. And add to that is the fact that the majority of todays anime watchers want anime the way it was meant to by the original creator and they see unnecessary editing as 'butchering'. Sure, in the 80's, editing anime and repackaging them as a different show were a common thing. And i think this is the reason many folks hate Robotech, because of how it was created.

If it wasn't for Robotech, you likely would never have even heard of Macross.
So you really need to Robotech it's credit. YES the original Macross was the true one. YES it was better.
But Robotech was the catalyst. It is what exposed those of us who loved the story to the real thing later on.
Why be such an asshole about it? Don't be so narrow-minded that you can't see the correlation.

My introduction to Macross begins by watching the English dub of Macross Plus. By the time, I never heard of Robotech before until I surfed the Internet to found out that the original series are adapted to become the Robotech series, I found some videos of the recent ones The Shadow Chronicles and it sucks compared to Macross Frontier. I'm not rude or anything but that happens before my knowledge of Robotech, you just doesn't know that my 80s memories are pretty shallow.

Robotech was one of the shows that brought a huge wave of fans into anime, and brought it into the light of main stream, so anime fans hate it forever.

@JamesBond77 No, Robotech was an attempt to bring a series to the US that preserved the spirit of the original. Anime at the time was being butchered horribly (Re: Nausicaa into Warriors of the Wind). However, anime is frequently not long enough to be aired with a new episode every day in the US, so a linking story was built.
Get over it. Robotech exists in the same place as Macross II for me: An alternate continuity. (Not to mention DYRL?)
Funny how no one moans about Voltron.
