  • I have no idea what I'm looking at here.

  • For some reason mine emits constant noise. :(

  • Is there anyway you can use the matrix as an adio output?

I am trying to re-create a tone matrix...

  • Nice tutorial :)

  • can't get the red buttons

  • @vayatelanen just in the left down side trere is a lock... push it

  • Thanks!!!

  • awesome! it works very good!

  • Thanks alot!

  • hey danioioi I had the same prob as you with the red buttons not comming on. I figured out that you have to take the whole thing out of edit mode, go to "view" at the top of the screen and uncheck edit

  • any chance of making more max/msp/jitter tutorials? I know of Baz but you seem to do a good job as well.

  • I also have a MultiMix 8 USB, it's great (though a bit noisy in some cases, did you notice this too?) --- I don't think it can be used as a controller as it's only for audio, not MIDI. Though it can be a mixer for a number of channels into Max, the audio can then get routed to LogicPro with rewire~ I think.

If you can get your hands on a MIDI controller, Max (and other DAWs) really get a whole new life. Getting away from the mouse and into dials/sliders is fantastic. [ctlin] object in Max.

  • hmmmm, well I don't have OSX installed at the moment lol, I had OSX Leopard and had no problems in getting the circles turning to red. It might just be that grey is your default setting.

Can you still get sound when you set up all the commands?

  • hey, the cells wont show up on my matrixs it just goes gray. what do i do?

  • what version of MaxMSP are you using and what OS?

  • umm, i have a mac OS x tiger? i believe it's the max 5.0.7, the icon is a 5.

  • how are you activating the waves in the matrix? like the red buttons that appear inside the matrix? i'm really new to this.

  • Well, as the matrix controller is connected to the input of the matrix~ box means that when you click on the matrix. The red buttons that appear on it are a standard colour but I am sure there is a way you can make it any colour, or in fact turn every button a different colour :)

To make the sound come out of the matrix you have to add a sound wave command. For this demonstration I used saw~ to create a saw wave and cycle~ to create sine wave.

  • The matrixctrl uses picture files for its background and cells, so can be any color, though all the cells will act the same. Cells can have as many states as you want, too, not just 0 and 1. So you can use them to set things like velocity too, and they can be set in "dial mode" where you can scrub with the mouse and set ranges easily.

Cool stuff, glad to see some of these videos out there. Max is so endless it's good to have some info for folks to get started :)

  • To make sure all the buttons on the matrix make a sound you have to make sure that you have to correct number of inputs and outputs. This is the numbers corresponding after the matrix~ command. The numbers mean 4 inputs, 4 outputs and the last number is an output where I placed "print dump" which sends messages to the max window (good for checking if the patch has errors)

  • Hey, I'm trying to set max 5 up to send midi data and bang messages to logic, to control a sampler/synth or something but havnt had any luck yet. Have you?

    Nice tutorial by the way!

  • Just wiped everything off my computer so I am in the process of reinstalling max 5 lol. I am starting using Logic 8 but have not integrated it with Max yet. Hopefully I will be able to do some tests and then I shall post them :)

I have Ableton Live 8 and I think (once I figure it out) can combine Max patches to use as VST and VSTi's in order to create a much wider range of effects and sounds. It has a video about it on the Live website

  • that's great, man. keep up with the videos, i need max tutorials like a fat kid needs cake.
