In 2000 Bush & Gore went into the election virtually no difference in their polling numbers. Nader was polling at about 5%; 2/3rds of these individuals supported Gore over Bush.

If Nader would have withdrawn from the race (he wasn't going to win anyway) his constituents would have cast the deciding vote for Gore.

Nader knew this going into the race & he still went forward with his hopeless campaign. In other words, Nader gave Bush the election.

I remembered writing to the Nader campaign suggesting a crossover ticket to somehow get all of the disenfranchised to vote for the same third party.
