Totally wow, thanks for putting this one up! It speaks of the time and place with all the talented artists around at that time. I'm fascinated with the history and stories that REM wrote in their songs about the characters around Athens. I love the Succumbs films, Jim Herbert was a visionary, as was Howard Finster. Thank you so much bohemia!
This is WONDERFUL!! Thank you so much for uploading this! Is there ANYONE who knows if there's a way of obtaining some movies of Herbert's (Speedy Boys, Scars, etc.)?? So far I've found no information at all... folks from USA, help, if ye can!!
I saw the R A Miller exibit at the Lyndon House this morning. Its the definition of Southern Gothic. AT first I thought I was seeing the work of children, because there were so many children present... but it was just a semi-schizo from rabbittown outside Gainseville... RA Miller...
I've always thought it was interesting that Stipe uses double entendres regarding the word "raise"... and "raze"...in a few of their songs. A common theme it seems... Putting up walls or tearing them down.
A Major impact in my life was the first visit I made to Dearing St...and meeting J. Herbert. It took awhile...but I knew what I wanted to do in life- especially after seeing how Jim lived and the influence the rather unique inhabitants of the shacks out back had on my outlook. My brother lived there and I visited(read: ran away from home ) and spent many a day and night under the magnolia trees or on THE POIRCH GLIDER..a film by Jim in which that particular piece of furniture starred.
Life and how to Live It was a book by Brivs Mekis, a citizen of Athens, Ga in the early 80s. His book was a vanity press affair and almost no copies were, sold though thousands were printed. He died and left a house full of cases of his books. The next occupants of his Meigs street house used the several hundred solid cases for furniture: tables, chairs and beds. They were most grateful for this gift from Mr. Brivs. My neighbor has a copy.
Thanks, Jim Herbert, this needed to be on YouTube.

I've loved REM since I was 17... still do.
But Brvis Mekis was a prick. Read his "Life: How to Live it" and you'll see why... just sayin'
