I had this movie legally but my ex kept it. I thought it was really good, and having lived in NYC for so long and having Chinese clients for my business, I found it interesting. Some aspects of the movie, I found fairly accurate. At the very least, I found it entertaining. I will try to find this on DVD, perhaps ask my médiathèque here in France to buy this.
I like the role of Mickey in this good old movie. He went too far for the cause he believed to be worth the fighting. He didn't stop at nothing even when his life was endangered and close people died. The idea of a man almost obsessed with something he regards primal, and fighting to the last breath is inspiring!
@Joeplesciafilm I strongly agree! Mickey Rourke in this movie looks, acts, and talks too much like Bruce Willis, as if he is trying hard to be like Bruce Willis, just watch the movie and notice how he talks and looks, don't tell me he is not the exact replicate of Bruce.... and somehow, when he got older, he stopped.....lol...
i liked this movie. i really start to understand it. i think that is a little better than american gangster. intelligetn plot, a bit crazy action scenes but a nice film
Is this complete beast of a film out in UK "region" on DVD/Blue Ray, just USA region 1 I seem to see online shops which wont run on my countries players?
This movie is so fucking awesome. It's one of those movies I watched just because it was an old Mickey Rourke movie and it turned out to be one of my favorite films.
I bought it second-hand at a video rental 5 years ago. I watched it again yesterday. It's an excellent movie. Too bad it did not have commercial success in 1985!
Right. Let's show some serious John Lone appreciation here. Conveying with one look and an otherwise stoic facial expression what others need ten pages of dialog for - he's BRILLIANT! Such a shame he has done so few movies.
Right. Let's show some serious John Lone appreciation here. Conveying with one look and an otherwise stoic facial expression what others need ten pages of dialog for - he's BRILLIANT! Such a shame he has done so few movies.
Gotta love Rourke in his prime. I wish this film was held in higher regard, even just among crime thrillers. Cimino proved that he was still a directorial force, John Lone brought suaveness and depth to the 'ethnic villain' role, and Rourke damn near tore the screen up.
One can only hope that Cimino gets a chance to make another film as good as this someday.
Ah, 80's cop movies. "Year of the Dragon", "To Live and Die in LA", "Off Limits", "Lethal Weapon", "Die Hard". Good times people, good times! We have "Dirty Harry" to blame for that.
This movie is so amazing, one of my favorite. My favorite Mickey Rourke movie ! His just delivering an incredible performence. John Lone is great too, and so is the Oliver Stone screenplay and the Cimino direction. A real treat !
I havent seen this movie but Ive read old contemporary reviews of it from the 80s. It seems like Heat but 10 yrs earlier. You can definitely see the Michael Mann spark in it.
I remember working on this film as a best boy. It was a great film and rourke was a great guy! He would later let his go to a big party with him down at the fixer. He bought out the bar for the night and I remember even tho the girls he was with we're clearly underage and that he would smoke rocked up cocaine right in front of us, that he would make sure we all got home safe!
They were shooting this movie in Greenpoint Brooklyn when I was a kid. The trailers were parked on my block. Some guy in a fedora and a trenchcoat was adjusting his hat in the reflection of a limo window. My mother and sister went to the other side of the limo and tried to see inside. Then my mother asked the guy: "Is anyone important in this movie?" The guy said: "No. Just a bunch of bums!". We rented the movie about a year later. My mother gasped: "That's HIM!". It was Mickey Rourke!
Mickey Rourke plays homocide detective Stanley White in this film, in real life he worked the beat with him. In this he gives an incredible performance and plays a person much older than his years, his hair is dyed grey for the role. Rourke well and truly pulls it off, totally believable and a truly gritty and epic film of its time. Oliver Stone wrote the script too, what more could be added?
So true. I am still very pissed that the Academy didn't award Rourke the Oscar for his performance in "The Wrestler." That slight ranks right up there with Art Carney getting the Oscar over Pacino after "The Godfather Part II."
Probably because of Michael Cimino. Let's face it, it's industry people that decide who is nominated. Made the best film of all time? Doesn't matter if you aren't well-liked/well-connected in the film industry. It's as political as the Academy Awards. Bullshit.
Mickey attacked a fridge in this one. Curiously, he attacked a fridge in Pope of Greenwich Village as well. I think he has a love/hate relationship with them.
Mickey Rourke was AWESOME in The Pope of Greenwich Village, as was Eric Roberts AND Bert Young!!!
But Year of the Dragon was STUNNING for Rourke's portrayal of the Polish Catholic Stanley White. "You made one mistake, Joey Thai. I'm not Italian. I'm a Polack. AND I CAN'T BE BOUGHT!"
I'm curious about this movie...ever since "The Wrestler", I've been gaining serious respect for Mickey Rourke...I just saw "Angel Heart" and man, what a blisteringly great movie...is "Year of the Dragon" worth the Netflix rent?
Absolutely, bro...I also recommend "Angel Heart", which I think was his last great film prior to "The Wrestler" (a difference of 21 years...damn!)..check that one out when you have the time
Thank you for this trailer because it's not even in the Uk Dvd.One of my favourite films of Mickey Rourke's one of the greatest actors in the planet and his performance as Stanley White in this film was simply outstanding.
right on the nose. I can't stand the fact that now everyone understands it cause of the wrestler, he was always a great. A few crummy films but none the less a real actor....
Great movie and amazing performance by Mickey Rourke. Marlon Brando a well-known anti-racist, loved this movie back in the day. The all racist shit by critics is crap.
..was calling the triads "a thousand year old big fuck - up"..which makes him right, not racist!! I was so angry that time, cause the day I watched the movie in cinema I went home and turned the TV on!! There I heard the critics talk about M. Rourke playing a "racist hero"!!
Sometimes I think Mickey Rourke never really had the chance to become a Top Star, cause whenever he performed in a movie the audience found something to rate it bad!! It was that way with "Angel heart", one of the best thrillers I know, where people took offence at the sex scene..suddenly it was pornography!! Year of the dragon now is one of the best (and most critical) cop thrillers ever made - and people called Stanley White a racist!! The only "racist" thing he did..
It was more Michael Cimino who was under attack. The same happened with "The Deer Hunter" and "Heaven´s Gate" because American audience is ignorant. As for Stanley White, he didn´t like Asians at all but he was far from racist. The media needs controversy to have work. Cimino always tried to show America the way it is and suffered the consequences.
back when rourke was hot.

I dunno, I think John Lone was best in that wordless caveman role.
But it is good to see our heroes back in the eighties when they were so young and purty.
However, that beeyotch who played the reporter, eccch!
pinz2022 10 months ago
Classical movie. Mood of 80's, hard- boiled, fair cop in main role and Mickey in his prime.
I can't understand what is about with that 5 Golden Raspberry Awards. It's a bad joke or effect of ridiculous political correctness.
