  • It was going good until the 4:50 mark. Good cover, but it'll never top the original.

  • @DrButcherMD I think you meant to say it was going good until the 9:49 mark.

  • vomit

  • wow

  • jazz風アレンジが好きな人には薦める。

  • Superlativo!

  • @Wischmoppkopp finally I find someone who thinks the way I do...congratulations, it needs balls to say that to the world

  • i like this version better than the original :)

  • Not Bad-Not as good as the original! A little predictable, sound wise!

  • very well covered... evan to think of cover this kind of great music means, there are great musicans who are able to do that.

Of course, the TARKUS -LP is part of my record collection, so, don`t think i don`t know what i am talking about.

one more thing for those who say this or that is better.... they are DIFFERENT... thats the point!!

  • Fanboys can be so ridiculous... why not stop fighting over who is better, little children, and accept the great artists for what they are?

  • We can't click the link in your annotation. -_-

  • Come on guys.....haters included. This is pretty friggan good....I think they did a wonderful job, not only learning all the intricacies, but the performance element is right on par. I'd love to hear what Keith has to say. (I'm gonna ask him)

  • @headshop Just asked him....I'll keep you posted. (and YES, I linked to the site, so he can listen at his leisure)

  • @headshop so what did he tell you?? :)

  • Weird to see Kip Winger on here, but he's a lot more talented than people give him credit for.

  • jordan ruddess is nothing to compare to keith emerson but he is good

  • ALL these guys are geniuses and I don't know why grown men should argue this point. That being said Keith Emerson was a visionary at a time when most keyboards were filler. He took the art to a whole new level. He was a true pioneer. There wouldn't be Jordan Rudess'es in this generation if they didn't look up to and follow their heroes like Emerson, (who by the way is a really cool guy in person)

  • Nothing can replace ELP, but this is as close as possible. JR is by far the best keyboard player of the 21st century!

  • i know people are nostalgic but for God's sake it's Steven Wilson and Jordan Rudess and it's a masterpiece. simmer down

  • he kicks some butt here, any deniers are just posers.

every tribute song he does kicks ass.

    thank you.

    people compare him to sherinian.

    derek can't touch him,

    jordan kicks ass.

derek has the restricted and sterile style of a rio del mar spoiled brat with a wealthy dad. it is like pre fab riffs.

    rudess is impressive.

way to carry the torch with the prog tributes

  • great job

  • @Mosko54

    なるほど。

    表現が的確ですね。ありがとうございます。

  • I don't believe that there is anyone that can play like Keith, nor will there ever be but I do think Jordan is probs the best out there at playing Emerson's music.

  • Man where did he find the score for this piece???

  • Not bad, but for me the best version is the one that is in the live album "Welcome back..." of ELP.

  • When Jordan Rudess becomes the pioneer that Keith Emerson is on so many fronts, then we can talk. Until then, Jordan etc are just more copy cats.

  • @PeganCove Well, that's kind of irrelevant since Jordan Rudess has already invented at least 2 instruments and been a big part of the development of other breakthrough instruments such as the Continuum and the Zen Riffer. His fan base is also orders of magnitude greater than KE. I'm afraid Jordan has far gone past the point of being a Pioneer.

  • @metabog

I know several artists, some not even famous ones, who created their own instruments lately. You can thank technology for that mostly. Emo made his bones 40 years ago when Rudess was a no-name and technology was an infant . Emo is the best and biggest thing to EVER happen to keyboards. Without him, they wouldn't be on MAP. Isn't it peculiar the Rudess mentions him as one of his main influences - go figure. The fan base - thanks to technology once again. What else do you have to say?

  • @PeganCove Well then you're not giving Rudess much of a chance are you, you're just disregarding everything. Keith Emerson didn't single-handedly invent keyboards, there were others, Rick Wakeman, Richard Wright, etc. The evolution of music technology is not in the hands of any one musician, in fact it's been a complex mixture of academic research and musical pursuit, which Rudess is part of as well.

  • @metabog

Partner, it is YOU disregarding everything. Emerson put keyboards on the map. He had help from his peers, but Keith was first to made keys a lead instrument opposite the guitar. The instruments around when ELP was together were the result of input from Emo and other keyboardists too. Bob Moog was a close friend of Emerson's and you know the word Moog, don't you? Yamaha and Korg were also dependent of input from players like Keith. There's no doubt that Jordan is an immense talent.

  • Just don't think he's leaping over Emerson by leaps and bounds just because he is your favorite keyboardist. He is the first generation after players like Emerson, Wakeman, Wright, Moraz and Tony Banks. Just like Buddy Rich said about drummers like Neil Peart and Carl Palmer: "They're great at those tremendous sets. I hope they are just as good on a 4 piece set." Watch Emerson on piano improvisations. I have not seen a Jordess piano video that compares.

  • @PeganCove

    Ditto.

I fancy Sherinian above and beyond Rudess as well.

  • @PeganCove Another argument are these:

    1. I believe that in Live concerts Jordan is better performer

    2. Times are different and the stages also, what I mean is that in the late 60's and 70's Progressive Music was initiating in fact Rock n roll Metal was initiating that in a way helped to almost anyone famaous could invent something and became pioneer because they played on the dawn of this style, and was more accepted by the media and record companies

  • @rubendrakkar "You believe" - Opinions vary. Times ARE different now. With the advent of technology, it is MUCH easier to produce music today. Though, the fact that the media and music companies accept Lady Gaga and Justin Beiber as musical pioneers shows today's lame state of things. Music is hardly music any more for the most part. While Rudess is a breath of fresh air in this respect, Keith STILL rules hands down.

  • @PeganCove P.S. Sorry for being such a snob.

  • @PeganCove

    3. Jordan was a teenager (16) in the 70's keith was at his almost 30's it doubled his age, plus jordan didn't saw the light of big fame until maybe almost 30 years later, so there's no comparison there.

    4. ELP also played music from other musicians like pieces of Muggorski among others, the thing is that they where lucky enough to be born at the dawn of rock n roll/metal music

  • @rubendrakkar You still haven't shown me a video of Rudess at the piano that tops Emerson's improvisations. Still waiting...

  • @PeganCove Go away. Thanks.

  • @TVL919 I knew you wouldn't come up with anything even though you searched relentlessly. Thanks for proving me correct. The "go away" statement more than seals it. Best of luck trying to BS other people...

  • @PeganCove He told you to "go away" because you've done nothing but force your ideas down people's throats since you started posting here, without accepting anyone else's ideas. You also have a fairly skewed perspective on Music Technology. My flatmate was Keith's nephew so I have a good idea of what KE is like in person, and I can tell you right away that he's not the god you revere (he is rather rude), and doesn't even play keyboards anymore.

  • @PeganCove KE didn't invent keyboards, and he didn't invent modern music tech, he was merely a participant. As a person soon to have a master's degree in Music Tech, and having formally studied for exams in Music Tech history I think I have a good view on this subject, and as I've told you before, there were a million people, mostly academic, who had a real effect on the technology. None of these musicians sat there and designed the electronic circuits inside these synths.

  • @PeganCove We understand that you're a fan of KE, and so am I (otherwise I wouldn't have uploaded this song), but I think you're well into fanboy territory at this point. There is nothing I hate more than someone who sits there and goes "go ahead, throw all your arguments at me so I can say LOL NO to them and then act smug". Now please, either learn to have a bilateral or multilateral discussion or refrain from posting.

  • @metabog Stick Fanboy up your arse. You've done the same here - force your opinion of Rudess down throats. So, don't call me out for what you've been doing all along. I know a ton of people who have graduated from Juilliard School of Music and Berklee School of Music. "There is nothing I hate more than someone who sits there and goes "go ahead, throw all your arguments at me so I can say LOL NO to them and then act smug" " That is YOU in a nutshell. If you reply again, so will I!

  • @PeganCove No u.

  • @PeganCove I have an opinion of Rudess being better than KE. I also think that there are others better than Rudess. It's very hard to quantify what we like about musicians, which is why it would be very difficult for anyone to give you an example of Rudess that will impress you if you are heartbent on glorifying Keith Emerson. It's really that simple, everyone is allowed to like what they like.

  • @PeganCove

Until this post, "Go away" was the only statement I've ever made towards you. My attitude is not based on your opinion that KE is better than JR. It's rooted in how you choose to express your thoughts in such a poor and rude manner, but I digress. Go away.

  • @TVL919 AND, he changes his tune yet once again! First, he bows at the feet of Rudess only and NOW there are others better than him! Go figure! What s DOPE! Remember ... KE = pioneer, Rudess = follower. Class is over, don't forget your schooling!

  • @PeganCove You apparently are confusing me with someone else. Where did I bow before Jordan? I'm not changing my opinion on anything. I'm merely pointing out you are acting like a jackass.

  • @TVL919 Don't go away mad - just go away!! Merry Christmas Zipperheads!

  • @PeganCove Sorry, but on that level, it's simply absurd to compare musicians with words like "better" or "worse". They're both just great at what they do. If arguing like you do in a very strict way, you'd be forced to say that the first Neanderthal who hit one stone with another was the greatest musician of all time. Unfortunately, many critics argue just like that, so The Beatles won't ever leave the #1 spot on any list. Don't get me wrong, they were great, but there are better, musicalwise.

  • @Wischmoppkopp Amen.

  • decent. synth is great in some places, corny and unneccessary in others. Steve wilson, while good, doesnt really sing like greg lake.

  • @joverboss It's not Greg Lake.

  • @metabog The vocals on the original are Greg Lake. I said that steve wilson, who sings on this, doesnt sound like greg lake.

  • @metabog I meant that Steve Wilson doesn't match Greg's vocals, not that I thought it was Greg singing.

  • @metabog

Since Tarkus was released in 1971 and this version was recorded in 2007 there certainly has been some huge production advantages made available within the last 36 years wouldn't you say? You may like this production better than the original, but it certainly isn't better. It's a cover after all and if ELP didn't compose the piece there wouldn't be any to cover it. Besides, writing a composition and embellishing or improving on that composition is far from same thing.

  • Final Fantasy Boss Battle

  • Jordan rudess is really a bad ass

  • I clicked on this seeing that Steven Wilson was singing in the description. I really wanted this to be better but it just doesn't do it for me...I thought ELP went over the top at times with over-indulgence in musicianship but this was really too much.

  • the main reason why i love this cover is because Steven Wilson's incredibly soft and emotional vocals.

  • JORDAN RUDESS Best Keyboard Player In The World

  • That fucking Rudess couldn't not do a bad job! Machine man he is!

  • If that's corny, then corn me up

  • Oh god that guitar solo is so corny my god what was he thinking. I'll take the original any day

  • @Lepretr0n How is it corny?

  • @metabog If you had any taste the extreme cheese would be PAINFULLY obvious

  • @Lepretr0n The 'cheese' you're talking of is incredibly relative. I actually really like the guitar solo, the dude (Bumblefoot) has some interesting expression on the guitar.

  • @Lepretr0n yes, guitar solo is low class, but the rest is not bad

  • @Lepretr0n you are right brother, this solo is very low, but the rest is not so bad...

  • @Lepretr0n Care to elaborate, instead of just stating some fanboyish assbackwards unfounded nonsense????

  • @o0Slipdisc0o It's bad and your opinion is wrong and you are smelly

  • very well plaied but KE has more stregth, he is wild

  • I prefer the original, I like the hammond organ.

  • no matter how good the coverversion is, it 's still a cover. But sometimes a coverversion is like a new song, for example joe cocker's "with a little help from my friends" or feliciano's "light my fire". But this cover here has only copy quality., but after all, it is very good !

  • @emeraldomusik I'm sorry, but in my opinion this is better than the original. Immense credit to ELP, but this just is better in every way.

  • @metabog Yeah... I don't agree either... It's better quality of course! But how many decades of technology difference is there exactly? It's just a copy-paste cover. It's not better or worse. It's like writing somebody else's essay in a different font.

  • @metabog you must be some def SOB, this thing has so much cheese on it that is uneatable, this guy Rudess simply has no sense of taste, he'd be better back with his corny speedsucker pals.

  • @metabog so true

  • Second part?

  • @MsbShared oh alright cool bro

  • This cover, although i like a lot, is a demostration of Rudess' aim to show us how great player he is; i mean, always birubirburiubiru and a lot of weir sounds as saying "i am the best, and i'm showing you". Nevertheless, i'd do the same if i could.

  • @iziarraputegui Well he IS the best, and he IS showing you. :P

  • @metabog Well, i think he's not the best. As Oqumomaru said 5 months ago, Keith Emerson > Jordan Rudess. JR is probably the best keyboardist in metal nowadays, but if you listen to his whole work, and Emerson's work, you will notice that Rudess has not contributed in keyboard stuff at all. And I don't want to insult Rudess, cause I admire him with all my soul, but Emerson IS keyboard God.

  • "My father, by way of encouragement, often said to me “You’ll never make any money writing music other people can’t sing or play.” As I never wrote this conceptual piece to make money, I wish he were still around to hear Jordan Rudess and his fine musicians’ version of Tarkus; taking a composition I am proud of to another level[...]"

    Keith Emerson

  • Rudess version really rocks!

  • Ron Thal FTW!

  • I would give my left testicle to have played that cowbell.....

  • @metabog

he definatly is! where is the rest of this song???

  • @ShiftyStealthy This guy would not of been able to upload all of it in 08 if I can get a copy of the album I will upload a full version.

  • hmm I haven't listened to them a great deal but i just realised where the good bit of porcupine tree's sound comes from.....

  • @Rrrrobbo oh no, it's actually the guy from porcupine tree, XD

  • This recording confirmed my suspicion that Lake and Palmer were kind of sea anchors to Emerson which in turn might have hindered Emersons development. Emerson is great but still very white and european (well ... I'm too ; ) ) and a little choppy in his compositions and execution. The Emerson/Rudess and Page/Vai comparison makes sense. Time moves forward, Page and Emerson are still great though, but lots of people flies in circles around them nowdays. Somebody had to write the shit though... : )

  • also, i think the drums are WAY better in this. this always angers over-vocal ELP fancultists, but i always felt Emerson out-classed Palmer and especially Lake...they always sound like they don't understand what Emerson is trying to do and can't keep up. This is especially clear on Lake's abysmal generic guitar solos on Tarkus...he just doesn't understand the harmonic complexity and can't contribute.

  • thanks for posting! i'll have to check out this album...never knew it existed. i somewhat share some of the sentiments (though crudely expressed) in the comments that it's not quite as tasteful as the original, but it's a cover - if it was exactly the same, what would be the point? rudess is obviously a better technical player than emerson, that can't be argued....and there are some "flairs" and expansions of the original ideas in this cover that i like a lot.

  • emerson has more real and raw skills that come from the soul. Rudess seems more like a trained monkey robot with john tesh sounds coming out of the keyboard. ones more like a real magician musician wizard master being to rudess is like a college project to get a good grade for his class.

  • you can't compare whos better, its a different time and place. They were using incredible mad scientist synthesizers instead of digital keyboards nowadays. So its a completely different game.

  • Emerson is better than this thing rudess is inferior on tecnique and class...

  • @Nawtas90 I disagree. On "class"... 'maybe', just maybe he is better, but not on technique, not ever. Keith Emerson could never play a lot of Dream Theater stuff, but JR could nail ELP stuff any day. In terms of technique JR is lightyears ahead. In terms of class or maybe restraint, maybe they're on equal footing. I like this version much more than the original ELP version, so you can see where I stand. :P

  • @metabog What!?!?......tecnique!?rudess???.....ahahahahah.....have u ever play the keyboard??? I can express my opinion becuase i play it and Emerson has a enormous tecnique!!! Is the more tecniuque....compare Rudess to Emerson is like to compare the shit to the chocolate!!!......This is new!!!Rudess more tecnique than Emerson!!ahahahaahahahah......ridicoulous!!!!

  • @Nawtas90 Woah. Oh well.

You fail massively. Did you know Jordan Rudess was accepted to Juilliard when he was 9. He could play with one finger when he was 12 what Emerson can play. I'm surprised you say you play the keyboard and are still so ignorant. I'm not criticizing Emerson, because he's one of my main influences, but this is like comparing Jimmy Page to Vai. They are both good guitarists, but Vai is orders of magnitude more advanced in terms of both technique and 'class'.

  • @metabog You don't understand nothing of tecnique!!!Certainly Rudess has a big tecnique but is inferior than Emerson the Dream Theater 's song is very simple like the Rudess solos! Rudess in an interview speak that he's influenced by the best keyboard player that is Emerson!Really do u think that Emerson cannot sound the Dream's song? You don't understand anything of music!!! You must inform yourself and so speak!!! Emerson can sound the dream's song with the feet!!who has play with the best??

  • @metabog Page invented so much on electric rock guitar I think it's just hard to compare.... they are just too different.

  • @jfrockon Yes, but can you truly compare them in terms of technique? No, and that's what the other guy misunderstands. Could you get Page to shred like Satriani? Could you get John Bonham to play drums in Dream Theater? Could you get Emerson to play half the stuff JR does? Probably not. I'm a big ELP fan and Keith Emerson is a huge influence on me and my music, but I am realistic, and I think it's not realistic to say they are comparable in virtuosity.

  • @metabog You know I agree with you totally. Here is the thing though, if you know your rock music history players have more to learn from than ever before, players skills are (for the real masters) are better than ever. It really takes the ones before them to set the bar. Was Jimi Hendrix as good as Vai, Johnson and others? No, but he upped the bar. Same can be said with ELP. To compare is really not fair. There was not a rock keyboard masters like that before them. Emerson, Wakeman etc.

  • @jfrockon p.s. thanks for the civil discussion man.

  • @metabog wat the f dude! wat the f!!! rudess is rudess and emerson is emerson!!! now i may not be an awesome musician or keyboard player but i played and explored enuf to tell all u ppl that wat ur arguing abt is crap!!!!

  • @metabog wat the f dude! wat the f!!! rudess is rudess and emerson is emerson!!! now i may not be an awesome musician or keyboard player but i played and explored enuf to tell all u ppl that wat ur arguing abt is crap!!!! being obsessed with technical prowess is just teen angst, a drive to prove a point. music is above that. any "musician"(who is not just a skillful player) should realize it sooner or later.

  • @grinchdude How is that teen angst? We are having a discussion about technical prowess, we are not obsessed with it, but it is a factor.

  • @Nawtas90 I think they are different and the same. Emerson paved the way for folks like Rudess to become what he is. Kudos to both. This IS a very cool modern cover of a masterpiece. As one person said, this is like comparing Jimmy Page to Vai. You can't really.

  • What album is this from? Epic cover!

  • @elchafa JR's The Journey Home. Or was it The Road Home? Can't remember.

  • @metabog It's "The Road Home", and thanks for the reply.

  • Super cover.

  • This cover is flat out amazing. Tarkus was one of my favorite albums when I got it in 1971 - I was twelve, and received it from a record reviewing club I belonged to, based in L.A. - and this is a fantastic adaptation which is generally pretty faithful to the original.

Ironically, I didn't realize when I clicked on it that it was Steven Wilson on vocals, so that was an excellent surprise. Rock out, guys! ;-)

  • I love Jordan Rudess' playing. But I still cannot get away from the truth. That this incredible piece was originally written and recorded by a trio of young guys in their mid 20s. Carl Palmer had created the tempo running in his head and played it to Keith, who then, turned it into this piece. Greg Lake was not so impressed. His reaction to Keith's first playing of it was. "Well, it'll be nice on your solo album!" It was typical of the difference of opinions that led to ELPs demise.

  • If Keith Emerson was on Keyboards, Greg Lake on vocals, bass ang guitar and Carl Palmer was on drums everything would be so different!!

  • if gavin harrison was playing the drums everything would be so different!!

  • why is the volume jumping up on certain notes??? sounds like crap.

  • steven wilson makes every song better. he could cover a bunch of beatles songs and i would at least call them equals

  • I think this is wonderful. Love SW on vocals as well. <3

  • @zakdagger, Emerson is a lot better than Rudess, I'm sorry to say.

  • Playing = flawless as you could expect from mr. Rudess

Sounds = can't beat the original but some interestingly different sounds too.

  • Beautifull,magnificant...

  • I kind of liked some parts, but the original just has something that makes it so great. However Rudess kinda did quite well covering this.

  • Man, the original is so much better that I find it really hard to aprecciate this... AND I'M TRYING TO! REALLY AM!

*sigh... it was a good effort tho...sigh*

  • Tarkus in the 21st century ...There are too many of the effects of sequential programming. But I like that! :)

  • Jordan Rudess is like the Herman Li of the keyboard, he just "shreds" or whatever it should be called on keyboard.

  • @Ogumomaru ...Except Rudess can actually play his instrument well.

  • @Ogumomaru Yeah and he's one of the most talented musicians in the world. Herman Li is famous for one song in Guitar Hero.

  • Wow, he learned the whole original improv solo from Tarkus and plays it in "Stones of Years"!

  • good job capturing at least part of the original feel, but maybe a bit too updated and gilded. IMO try emulating the live version from Welcome Back; it was the best version they did. Your musicianship is exceptional, though. Great work.

  • @TheFearlessFreep I didn't make this, this is Jordan Rudess from Dream Theater, arguably the greatest prog rock / metal keyboard player of our time.

  • @metabog -___-''

  • @metabog Have you heard of Janne Warman I think his name is? He's pretty amazing too.

  • where is part 2?

  • Bloody awesome.

  • From what album is extracted this song??

  • 25 deaf people watched this!

  • nice electronic bit at the end. funny there's still no significant change after the Moog.

brilliant cover my musical friend. auguri, va bene cosi!

  • Keith Emerson > Jordan Rudess.

  • @Ogumomaru agree

  • very cool...Curious to know if this was recorded on a KURZWEIL keyboard..IF YOU WANT TO BE TRULY INSPIRED CHECK OUT 'RACHEL FLOWERS" VERSION OF "TARKUS" ON YOUTUBE...very young, very gifted, very blind, young girl...She blew me away...

  • @roblouis59 It's more than likely recorded with the Korg OASYS.

  • @metabog Actually he used the Oasys, Kurzweil, a Moog, a Roland Fantom, and a Roland V-Synth among other things.

  • @thericecrispy2 That's good to know.

  • Very cool..Curious to know if this was recorded with a Kurzweil ...IF YOU WANT TO BE TRULY INSPIRED CHECK OUT "RACHEL POWERS ' VERSION OF TARKUS ON YOUTUBE...amazing...young, blind,gifted,teenager....

  • GRRROOSSSSSSSartig gecovert!!!!!

  • recuerdo cuando tocabamos con esta mega intro " bermuda" fue super exitante y extraño!

  • great cover job.go prod rock. rod is a huge inspiration to the drum community

  • Being a huge ELP fan this cover is totally awesome...kudos!!!!

  • Great cover!

  • This was fun. Nice cover... ELP has such a great influence on so many great people.

  • my opinion is that this is a very impresive work but ill stay with the original ELP, just personal musical taste, but congrats to JR, although i dont like the solo additions but its a matter of taste =)

  • 1st point - this is awesome and thank you for posting

2nd point - you are a cruel motherfucker for not posting the 2nd part. I now have Tarkus blue balls

  • Impressive cover, ELP should be very proud. Kudo's for all the fine work.

  • Amazing, took me back to my teens. liked your version but I prefer the original.

But I aint a music critic so carry on rocking.

  • ELP Tarkus rocks But so does this version in so many great ways, awesome cranked up, i went and downloaded the cd, it's a GREAT CD, thumbs up for me

  • hahaha wow, is this guys really trying to compare to Greg Lake? lol

  • this is a very good cover

  • Outstanding. This is true music

  • just like to say that as an adolescent discovering Tarkus it totally blew me away. Long time ago but isn't that what growing up is all about?

  • SuuPererBB play ! Great arrangement particulaly for from1:05 to
