Each division in Ohio has strengths and weaknesses. Sure, D1 has those powerhouses, but there are way more D2 schools, boosting the competition. D3 is mostly smaller private schools, but they recruit talent. I won my title in Ohio, and I coached there for about 10 years in all three divisions. That region of the country (OH, PA, etc.) produces superior wrestlers because they teach and execute the fundamentals. Good positioning, hard-nose wrestling. Don't believe me? Watch the NCAA finals.
it is iowa and ohio who are the toughest wrestling states. BTW this video sucked ass, it made me wanna wash my ass cuz of how boring it was. Also WTF kind of coaching is that at 0:15?

California wrestling is much tougher to win. California wrestlers are bloody tough. And when it comes to state championship, we have one class, so the true champion can be revealed, none of that div I, div II, div III shit.
Maybe, but the wrestling isn't any better. That's why the National Champs are from Ohio (Graham HS, Div. 2)-followed closely by St. Ed's Div. 1 & Troy Christian is no slouch in Div. 3. Don't forget Blair in NJ & several programs from PA & IA. Now, go back and put out your fires during an earthquake.
in d2 ok grahams there but who else? youll take second to a graham kid in d2 or get 6th in d1 to a bunch of studs from powerhouse schools like eds perry brecksville wadworth st. i's
I take comfort in knowing that even though I'll never be a high school state wrestling champion, I'll always win against this guy in not looking like a leather shoe. That is one ugly bastard.
In the championship match as a senior, Willie locked his hands in desperation to keep his opponent from gaining what would have been a match-winning escape. The official didn't change levels so he wasn't able to see it and the match continued. Had the locking hands been called, Willie would have been the only Ohio wrestler to lose his fourth state title match!
I would have to disagree with that. watch how many times they will call pins and stalling on undefeated guys or guys going for mutiple titles. There is zero favoritism. The undefeated wrestlers in ohio are notorious for being hard to beat because it is not easy to do in arguable the toughest state in the nation
@mlcurcio89 See Tony Jameson's 1st round match @ OHSAA State Tourn. his senior year on Flowrestling. He was stuck like Chuck but they wouldn't give up the pin. This stuff happens every year. They also are allowed to play cheap shot games like head butts while on top. The refs here are the most political, egotistical hard-ons imaginable (as a group). There are a few legitimate disinterested 3rd parties out on the mat, but they are few and far between.
The two guys at the begginning were both great wrestlers. I was a freshmen wen Barentine(the one who threw the other) won state at 275 and he also coached me. My cousin came in second at 189 that year.
Willie was not the first four-time OHSAA state champion. In fact there were six others to accomplish the feat before him: Mark Zimmer, Jim Jordan, Jeff Jordan, Erik Burnett, Dan Hanson and Ken Ramsey.
Wineberg was the most controversial four-timer, however!
really? i knew he won his last state title in overtime by criteria or something, but i didn't know it was controversial. Not doubting you, just wondering what was so controversial.
I'm actually a Miamisburg Wrestler where he coaches, so i'm a little biased.
Controversial or not, he's my favorite four timer!
It seemed like he won every match by a point but he beat some exceptional wrestlers. Jimmy Johnson and Sean Contos are two that come to mind, that may have even been the same state tournament.
i think david taylor will take the best 4x from c.p if he win iron man next year along with 2 more state wins..4x state champ + 4x ironman champ he will be the first to accomplish this.
Best 4 time state champ from Ohio that i seen would be the Opfer kid. The oldest Jared. He was 60- 0 and had every record imaginable! John McGhee was real good too!
pshh, Dustin ran from me! we were suppose to wrestle at stark county all stars and riggs told me he was training for "nationals" in minn. HAH, yea right he was afraid! (too bad, i was gonna have him sign my shoes) but seriously, D. SCLATTER IS A FUKIN ANIMAL he would beat me beyond recognition, so is steve luke.
Was I the only one that noticed that he is the only 4 time state champion in the world that does not have cauliflower ear

Did i say anything about wrestling teams?
I will agree CA doesnt have many good teams. But i'm talking about individual wrestlers.
I'd say the only other state that has the toughest individ. wrestlers is PA

Barentine is now doing ultimate fighting, and Nick Terbay the 189 I mentioned(who also came in first nationally in Greco) is now boxing.
