  • the top of the heap

  • The reason why you are giving an interview an Labor Day is because you don't have a life. LMAO

You suck and I'd like to shove smoldering hot coals up your gaping anus.

  • Good production, tight execution, varied songwriting, but ultimately forgettable. I'll stick with Sworn to the Dark.

  • I'd give it a solid 8 myself. I'm actually surprised he didn't give it a higher score based on all of the praise he had for the album throughout the review.

  • You have a really fantastic grasp of English. Easily my favourite reviewer.

  • Oh, man. 6 out of 10? Smh.... This is easily the most important black metal release of the twenty-first century.

  • @aguyfromtexas Nah man, it's a great album but it's definetely not that avantgarde/experimental/important.

  • This is a masterpiece. Sure, it's your opinion, but 6/10..? I'm quite chocked you didn't mention anything about one of the best tracks on this LP (imo) "Waters of Ain". It's so beautiful, yet raw and agressive in some parts. The outrosolo is just perfect.

  • @BeatBay Right, because we all know metal is about how you look. Please, get a life.

  • Nice review, but after watching a great many of your reviews, this is the only one I can remember where I really disagree with what you're saying, especially about this sounding like other black metal that you like. I've listened to black metal since the early 90's, and this to me is the best album ever. Nothing in the genre comes close to the power and feel of this album, for me. That being said, if you know any bands that do sound like this, please let me know, I'd like to hear them.

  • waaaaaahteeeeein

  • i love how every trve bm pussy disses him because he doesent look like they think a metalhead or a guy who knows what hes talking about should look like.... get a life you untermenschen!

  • @Necrophil89 from where are you?

  • @BlackMetalWorld: why do you ask me

  • tzz why do you do this? is a bit gay

  • 10 a dead on the solo in Malfeitor alone make this album a 10

  • well, actually i totally agree with you, after listening to the album for a few times. the complexity of the songs, is builded on a solid rockin´basement, whith the right amount of thrashing parts, that load the whole thing up, with a very special energy. together with the satanic lyrics and the progressive bm elements, the "watain-sound" is born! reaping death is breathtaking!!! also you´re right, when you say, there seems to be more behind the songs when you hear them first. good ear dude, thnx

  • antonia fantayno.internet`s most cocksucking music -jerk.aaah pussyboy has got headaches ,from too uch hollywood prick licking.suck my fuck,nazi-baldhead with no brain.fucktayno, you are untight unwell performed, unspoken.you are a real freak ,that always deserved to be beat up.har har harhar.you jerk.loneley piece of wankin shit, you are.lowlife bastard.watch me rollin son of s crackwhore

  • the only thing that bugs me is that you mispronounced Watain. It's more like vaht-aye-n.

I do agree with you nearly 100%.

  • Waters of Ain is one of my favorites as well. Awesome solo by SL of The Devils Blood ( @theneedledrop that band would be worth checking out as well! Not BM, but great nonetheless)

I do agree its quite a lengthy album, great to play when working or driving long distances but I wouldn't spin it without doing something else at the same time (kind of how I grade albums:)

Then again it's not an album I would want to listen to only halfway.

The double LP with the booklet and poster is beautiful btw!

  • I have to disagree, this album is in my top three for Metal in 2010. You are correct about "Reaping Death" and "Malfeitor" being spectacular however "Wolves Curse" and "Total Funeral" are just as spectacular. I find the whole album to be great and the final track "Waters of Ain" is epic. I do like how you notice the Thrash correlation that Watain has, Anyways a decent review even though I do not completely agree.

  • This IS a masterwork.

    "decent" 6/10?

Damn, that's one arrogant way of expressing that you basically have no idea what youre saying.

  • Well, I correct myself. Judging from what you said during the review itself you actually DO know what youre saying. But I really dont get how you can get from a pretty precise review to a rating of "decent" (meaning: average/mediocre) 6/10. That really does not give the album its due respect. Just because its not "freaking [you] out", it certainly does not make this album as mediocre as your final rating suggests,

  • @Saufm thats true! i hate these hippster hardcore wannabe metalheads that wear hip glasses and clothes. NOT METAL! review kate perry but not real metal.

  • @Saufm

He didn't say it was in his opinion, a masterwork. Not once. He said that to some it would be considered as such but he made it pretty damn clear that he had a different opinion if you would have listened to what he said.

  • This is one great album and should stand on its own without any preconceived ideas of what a 'black metal' album should sound like. To my ears, this isn't a straight up, garden variety BM record. There's the progressive element and great production. Purists will probably dislike the 'clean' mix. Personally, I don't want every album to have that 'necro', first Burzum lp sound- that'd be a bit boring and played out. Three words: Waters Of Ain!! 5/5

  • 5/5. If you have trouble listening to the album from the begining to the end, due to it being too long. Then you're not supposed to listen to Watain, this album is a masterpiece, and the songs fit together perfectly.

  • Watain - Lawless Darkness = 5/5

  • Belus-Burzum was a great album this year!

  • I wonder if any of the guys who are slagging this guy off would be able to make a better video review of this. Or is it easier to hide behind one's keyboard?

  • This homo should stick to pussy indie music reviews. And by pussy I mean vagina.

  • @TorgeistLLN whats wrong with vaginas ?

  • I liked this album, but it fell short of being the masterwork that is Sworn to the Dark - which I find to be more progressive than Lawless Darkness.

  • LOLess Darkness

  • fuck you, stupid american hardcore blablabla kiddie! you should better listen to some funky lifestyle bay area blabla burger king israel credit card deathcore or get some new apple products! fuck you! heil satan! 10/10!

  • Comment removed

  • fuck you pseudonerd. you are just a bigmouth that needs to be shut by a grim true fan

  • Lawless Darkness owns. I would definitely give a higher score than 6/10. For me it would probably be around 8/10.

  • I really like this album, but maybe I'm biased because, hell first off, I'm Swedish and second, i thoroughly enjoyed their previous albums as much as i did this one.

And i have to admit, the fact that they are so open and honest about their beliefs makes reading the lyrics all that more rewarding. 9/10 for me.

  • You should do a review of your favorite album of all time, could be like a retro review if it's older.

  • you motherfuckin pseudo.nobody needs your contentless stupid comments.if you need attention DO somethin and stop annoying peeps with your obsolete opinions.you pretend to be a knowing expert but your just a wankin son of bitch.we- the real watain slaves will warble your filthy ass if manage to tocatch it, at a concert.you are a gay motormouth.i guess no bitch will allow you a fuck cuz yur that stupid and boring, no matter what good music you was introduced to. gay bastard. i want to finish you

  • Also, I found this LP to be dark, sweeping and beautiful in its delivery. As a musician I have nothing but respect for the boys in Watain and feel that I have much to look forward to from them in the future. Honestly, this made my "Most Black Metal Album of 2010" badge and I doubt anything else is capable of toppling that. I give it a (forgive the pun) 9.666 out of 10.

  • I sit down and enjoy it in one sitting all the time. You just need to ignore the rest of the world. Kudos on the good album review, btw.

  • Being so long, the album get's pretty boring, songs sound bit too similar. I've gave it a few lessons, but as a whole the album isn't so strong, but there are some songs that really stand out, like Waters of Ain is a great masterpiece.

As an album this I can't listen to this, I think it's pretty bad record and a disappointment to me, I love Casus Luciferi's atmosphere and intensity, and I do enjoy Sworn as well. I would give it 5/10

  • "I have a little bit of a headache... MY NEEDLE DROPS..."

  • Every time I try and watch this it freezes at 1.14 :(

  • I'm listening to this now, and I'm enjoying it....but I can't help but feel something is missing. It's well executed, it's well played and composed - but I can't help but feel it lacks impact somewhat. I think I'm with you TND, it's great, but there's something holding me back.

  • hold the phone, can you tell me what your race is?? you are so racially ambiguous its even funny.

  • BM 2010: Addicts: Black Meddle II by Nachtmystium

  • By the way nice review. I dig the more atmospheric side of Black Metal, so this is certainly none of my favourites. But still enjoyable

  • Is a decent 6 better than a light 6 ;) ?

  • @Wanterkeelt

    Yup.

  • Good review as usual. You should review the newest Raventhrone

  • @chillernz Ever? Maybe something from Wire or Mission of Burma? Do you mean Black Metal-wise? Maybe the 2nd or third Mayhem LP.

  • @theneedledrop

Ok keep upp the good music reviewing.

    Sorry for bad english. Norwegian

  • @chillernz I agree and i am willing to take it a bit further: They are flawless but don't add anything new to the genre. Black metal orthodoxy to the core, as it has been played by bands since the early 90's. They are good but thats it. Many similarities. Sorry watain fans from me also, its just my op.

  • @chillernz yes im glad im not the only one. i cant get with the vocals. shit doesnt sound hellish and sinister.

  • @chillernz

Yeah, I don't really dig Watain's vocals, either.

    Good music though.

  • You, sir, are a legend as always. Not normally being a fan of black metal I just bought this today based on your review. So far I'm loving it. I'm happy to categorise them as blackened thrash.

  • does anybody know a good sun o))) album that i could get into?

  • Nice review dude, I think this is a really good album, and it does drag on. Well done!

    (P.S - Digging the Sunn O))) shirt!)

  • You've answered my request :) I knew you were gonna do it though cause you left me a shout on my last.fm haha.

  • Great review, but I appreciate the record more than you do. I'd give it a solid 7. I anticipated a masterpiece but ended up with a great record.

  • @bobgray666 so for us, we that actually likes metal music, what about us? Fuckin ignorant idiot

  • @bobgray666 o u dont liek blak metale? wat abouwt blak sabarg???! der da bests!!!!!! u ignoramis

  • @bobgray666 Well, how would you review the album? I'd love to hear your thoughts via video.

  • @bobgray666 how about dont review metal because its shit!... yeah? ;)

  • @bobgray666 Are you kidding? The reason I watch TND is because he reviews a wide spectrum of music, and I love his metal reviews. Get off your high horse.

  • @bobgray666

I disagree. It's his opinion, it can't be wrong. I also happen to agree with his review. It's a great album, but nothing to write home about. I think with the way he generally rates things (which has albums rarely exceeding the 8/10 mark) he's dead on with this review. But hey, it's your opinion.

  • @bobgray666 i don't get it, do you not want him to review metal because you don't like metal? or do you like metal but disagree with his opinion? i'm just curious

  • @bobgray666 How can someones opinion be wrong? That's retarded.

  • @bobgray666 u dont know black metal, difference....

  • Favourite black metal album of the year? One of them is Istapp - Blekinge, thats a melodic black metal band from Sweden.

  • good review, going to see these guys in Dublin in a few weeks with Destroyer666. Yay!

  • As much as they know how to make music, the things those dumb fucks say in interviews and the fact they're selling "satanic accessories" on their website... it just repels me.

  • I still gotta grab this one. I love me some black metalz

  • AWESOME! I've waited for you to review this album :) Love it!

  • Anthony, I get that people like a variety of music, but how can you enjoy this and miami horror? they are just so polar!

  • @billbagger7 Well, I do enjoy Miami Horror a bit more, but I don't see liking both of these as impossible. I like both sweet and harsh music. I like Michael Jackson and Merzbow, too. I need harsh to enjoy the sweet and vice versa. It would be impossible for me to know how nice something sounds without something ugly to compare it to.

  • This years best black metal album has to be Addicts: Black Meddle II by Nachtmystium

  • I found a lot of the riffs on this album to be quite predictable so I was a little underwhelmed. As you mentioned, there are some great hooks, but overall there was far too much familiarity for me to enjoy it. I would however recommend the new album 'Apocalypse Sun' by Nightbringer which I found to be far more grim, intense and interesting:

  • Your reviews are really intersting dude. It's quite cool to see you review things ranging from indie to black metal. Keep it up man, it's nice to see unbiased reviews. You should be doing this for magazines.

  • I had a headache today, too. Derp.

Weird. What little brains I have were hurtin'.

I'll pass on Watain, I think. Unless theres some really dark, bleak instrumental type shit on it. That's what i really look for in black metal. That moody, disdainful, atmospheric type shit.

  • @YoureWrongImRight I'm so right that we're both wrong.

  • @YoureWrongImRight yeah, not really moody. this is a BM album about rocking the world with destructive riffs.

  • so i have a question, whats your favorite black metal album of all time?

  • How would you rate it if ill send you flac? ^^

  • My problem with black metal is that it is too minimalistic, and like Reggae sometimes it sounds like one long song. Also it is very melodic, which is ironic.

  • I cannot believe you are reviewing this and not Ulcerate!

  • "this is not labor; this is love!"

    much appreciated. <3

  • by the way review Nachtmystium !! It came out in 2010!

  • Best black metal release of the year for me was easily Nachtmystium's

Addicts: Black Meddle, Part II. I only really dabble in metal and I would agree with 6/10 that being said for a metal fan particularly a black metal fan this is one the best LPs of the year.

  • Wow I actually thought you were ignoring this, Watain certainly keeps up quality thanks for reviewing it!

  • Can't wait to hear this, thanks TND.

  • Hell yeah! I remember asking you to review this hehe. I fucking love this album! I definitely agree with some things you said about the album being very ambitious and progressive. I think it makes the music more interesting to listen to especially when it comes to Black Metal. The music is very sinister, and still sounds great production wise. It has a very dark feel and atmosphere when they break it down into the slower tempos, and then its very relentless when they speed up. 10/10 for me!

  • i like few black metal bands watain is 1 of them. lp version is better

  • Watain and Interpol reviews the same week...gotta love theneedledrop!

  • Finally Black Metal! Leave Cradle alone! haha..

  • @thornygravy Hahahaha. Eh, they're just not my thing. What can I say? You gotta admit, harsher things have been said about them. :-P

  • @theneedledrop true, you didn't butcher em to death

  • It's good to see you review black metal.

Out of curiosity, what bands / records in particular did this one sound too similar to specifically?

  • Rotting Christ's Aealo is pretty damn far up there.

  • finally another metal review!!!

    lol

  • @harbid Can't ignore my metal drops. :-)

  • it's a pretty great album. I listen to a very, very limited amount of metal, and this is constantly being played. 9/10

  • A really good album I think, but partially a bit boring compared to Watain´s other albums. Maby I have to listen to this record more intensively.

My favorite BM album of this year? Clearly ´What Once Was... Liber I´ by the french band "Blut aus Nord". Pretty raw but absolutly enlightening!

I can only recommend to check out their other albums, especially ´The Work Which Transforms God´ and ´Odinist - The Destruction of Reason by Illumination´, they are killer!!

    grz from Germany,

    skoi

  • Music is never about labour...it's all about Love! Have an awsome Labor Day (what's left of it) ...keep being awsome Anthony :)

  • lovin' the tatt..

i have to ask, this is something that i hear often...what exactly does triggered drums mean?

  • lovin' the tatt

  • "THIS ISN'T LABOR, IT'S LOVE, FOREVER...." - Anthony Fantano 2010

  • Got this album when it first came out, and i wasn't disapointed.

  • I love this album. I'm a HUGE black metal fan and I consider it to be one of the best albums in black metal history. 9/10 for me.

  • It's not labour. It's love.

    ... a labour of love?

  • So far my favorite has been Rotting Christ new album, Aealo

  • New Drudkh album.... dooo ittt

  • I actually like this album, even though I'm not usually a black metal fan.. Also, I've just recently watched all of your videos, and you're the best reviewer for... Anything. You've helped me discover over 25 artists that I didn't know existed.

Thank you, friend, you have yet another enlightened Needle drop

  • 6/10?

Your rating system is very harsh, but, that's not always a bad thing. Have you ever given an album 10/10?

  • @ShadowstepSH nope, but he gives alot of 8's -__-

  • @rodrigopacheco12 actually, yes he has. Wire - Pink Flag

  • @rodrigopacheco12 Well, Little Women, Four Tet, Gonjasufi, Beach House, LCD Soundsystem have all gotten 9s this year. And are 8s that bad. The reason I give out so many 8s is because I'd rather review something I like than something I hate. Wouldn't you? Heh.

  • @theneedledrop not sayin that 8's are bad, you just give alot of them

  • @ShadowstepSH I don't feel it's harsh, but I'm biased, of course. a 2/10 would be harsh. For me, Anything above a 5/10 is a like. I just didn't love this album, that's all.

  • @theneedledrop Glad to see you dont use a "school grading" kinda scale, were a 7 and over is good (B-A) and 6 is like a C and anything below is like a fail :P

  • i still preffer sworn to the dark but still gonna listen to this one latter...
