If you look at their full body of work as well as the statements they made outside of music (in interviews & such) you would know that there isn't an ounce of racism in any of these guys. Sometimes it takes strong statements like "it aint Coca Cola, it's rice" to emphasize the very real cruelty many immigrants face. The Clash were the "nice guys" of punk - especially kind to their fans, polite in interviews, etc. If you want the assholes of punk, check out the Sex Pistols. LOL

Ok I'm an old guy Clash fan. Couldn't car less about MIA, but if it introduces the next generation to the the awesomeness that is The Clash , more power to em. MIA brought about a resurgence in the popularity of The Clash. That is always good. Its not like "Paper Planes" is a cover. The sample is the best part of it. So kids look up the sample and discover The Clash on their own, and feel hip about it, so when I go to the pub the Clash is playing on the box.

When it comes to talent, you can't say the person who sampled the song is as talented as the person who could actually play and sing the song at the same time. I thought MIA's Paper planes was great, but there's no comparing her to the Clash. The Clash was among the best bands/musical acts ever. Beyond that, they brought social awareness to pop culture in a way that had never been done before. Sure you can say reggae and folk artists did, but it wasn't the same. Listen to Sandinista!

I would say that Paper Planes became popular for a number of reasons, & I'm guessing it's mostly because of its association with Slumdog Millionaire which was hugely popular, plus the fact that people remember it as the song with the gunshot/cash register sound effects. The Clash sample certainly carried that song & is a HUGE part of it, but there are other factors to consider I suppose. I really dont think Strummer would've minded though so again I don't see the big deal.
