@mielkeway you're so clueless Mia was like 7 when this song was written. The clash are so original it's crazy. And mia using this song sample in her song is fitting because she lived in a place just like what this song is about.
Juggernaut is a BIG FAT COCK, A PRICK. he`s prob 12 years old, and has no idea of the influence that Joe & The Clash, have had on the music scene over the last 30 + years. Ok I'm an old guy Clash fan. Couldn't care less about MIA, but if it introduces the next generation to the the awesomeness that is The Clash , more power to em. ctfxc ftw and I can't believe MIA sampled this... I've said it before, rock influenced hip hop. blues influenced rock. gospel music influences blues. God influenced gospel music. See? Certain things you can trace back to god! lol
@HEYOUCNTDOTHT No I won't tell you that. Actually I was thinking about how african american music influenced almost every other modern genre of music. Starting with gospel then to blues, then to rock and hip hop. If anything, good music became great when it deviated from singing about god and miracles and such. So good music exists because people don't want to to sing about a mystical being, lol. Just something to consider.

@iwantcompletecontrol interesting. Thanks for clearing that up. But I do wonder, might the anti-racism stance be a convenient smokescreen in which to sing slogans such as 'your blood aint coca cola, its rice'? they are punk after all so it doesnt seem to make sense that they would be nice
@carpet691 No way. If you look at their full body of work as well as the statements they made outside of music (in interviews & such) you would know that there isn't an ounce of racism in any of these guys. Sometimes it takes strong statements like "it aint Coca Cola, it's rice" to emphasize the very real cruelty many immigrants face. The Clash were the "nice guys" of punk - especially kind to their fans, polite in interviews, etc. If you want the assholes of punk, check out the Sex Pistols. LOL
NME: What do you think people ought to know about you?
Joe Strummer: I think people ought to know that we're anti-fascist, we're anti-violence, we're anti-racist & we're pro-creative. We're against ignorance.
I could go on & on but I think you get my point now! Racism & the Clash do not go together AT ALL. They stood up for people who never got a fair shake at life - immigrants, the poor, the working class, minorities, etc... Check 'em out some more, you'll love them
@carpet691 Seriously? If there's one thing everyone should know about the Clash it's that they are ANTI racist. This song is about the struggles of immigrants - the alienated workers in England, Vietnamese children abandoned by their American fathers after the war, racism against Puerto Ricans in NYC, the plight of immigrants worldwide. It's not Joe Strummer telling them to "go straight to hell," it's the people who are mistreating immigrants. This is an anthem AGAINST racism.
Ok I'm an old guy Clash fan. Couldn't car less about MIA, but if it introduces the next generation to the the awesomeness that is The Clash , more power to em. Bristol exhibition centre 1976, the clash, Joe pumping his right leg,Paul swinging his bass real low, huge barney broke out, one of the best nights of my life.....still feel sad for Joe and his family....far too soon to go, very unfair....but what a band
Almost all of hip hop is sampled or based on some sort of sample..........NOT all of, but fair portion. I think if the artist that allows their music to be used does not have problem with it. better music for us all. I sample music myself, if u don't like how a sample is being used don't listen to it or do better....either way shut the fuck up & let the rest of use enjoy it.
If you go anywhere all you here is the constant drone of this new shit trend known as "Pop music". FUCK OFF to anyone who says people are entitled to their opinions, I mean, if you don't like Punk music that's fine, but Lady GaGa and LMFAO for example are just horrible artists. They have no real purpose, and their fans seem to just be 14 year old teeny bopper faggots. Trust me. I am in Grade 7 at my school and that's all it is.
the mighty CLASH !! thank god i was there in the day to see them countless times and your right joe and the boys wouldnt have had a problem with sampling think of BAD they had sampling to a art and who was number one in bad the one the only MICK JONES !! so cut the crap just listen and enjoy one of the greatest bands of all time !! those in the know check out the pun !!
Look, the credits of the song "Paper Planes" include a Mr. Joe Strummer, Mick Jones, Paul Simonon, and Topper Headon. So there, it's settled, she didn't "steal" anything! And as long as she has the permission of the ACTUAL MEMBERS OF THE CLASH, why should any of us be upset over it? They let her use it, they got the credit for it, and that's that. Fine by me.
@iwantcompletecontrol sampling maybe a good thing i don't know. but what i hate about it is that people will listen to paper planes and never know who actually wrote the best part of it.
@t0mtreflip Maybe casual fans of that song won't bother looking into it, but I'm sure people who call themselves big M.I.A. fans will find out one way or another that she sampled The Clash. Then they'll look up "Straight to Hell" and love it and become Clash fans for life...! Best case scenario! lol ;)
@iwantcompletecontrol Plus creative sampling advertises the originals. And sometimes if its a really obscure old song, it actually shines light on something that died long ago. Not saying that is the case with the clash, but that's pretty much how Hip-hop sampling works.
@iwantcompletecontrol Joe is dead, and the rights belong to the label, the clash members had nothing to do with it. That song is a fuckimg abomination.
@chadmerritt1 Well they were generous guys but everyone still likes to receive credit for their work. I remember reading that Joe Strummer was irked at the guy from Tears for Fears for using a line out of "Charlie Don't Surf" for their song "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." Strummer confronted the guy from the band and got a fiver out of him! LOL. Don't think it was mean-spirtied though (that's not Joe's style). The article is called "The Exile of Joe Strummer" if you wanna read it.
@iwantcompletecontrol the question shouldn't be weather she stole the song or not...the question should be: is the reason that Paper Planes became so popular based manly on the samples?
the other question i have than is: why is it MIA CAN'T seem to have a number 1 hit without The Clash? is it that she sucks at creating music, and thus her success isn't hers, but The Clash's?
@tazmon122 I dunno... I would say that Paper Planes became popular for a number of reasons, & I'm guessing it's mostly because of its association with Slumdog Millionaire which was hugely popular, plus the fact that people remember it as the song with the gunshot/cash register sound effects. The Clash sample certainly carried that song & is a HUGE part of it, but there are other factors to consider I suppose. I really dont think Strummer would've minded though so again I don't see the big deal.
wow, i can't believe this band would steal from MIA...bullshit.

Fine by me.

@iwantcompletecontrol sampling maybe a good thing i don't know. but what i hate about it is that people will listen to paper planes and never know who actually wrote the best part of it.
t0mtreflip 2 months ago
@t0mtreflip Maybe casual fans of that song won't bother looking into it, but I'm sure people who call themselves big M.I.A. fans will find out one way or another that she sampled The Clash. Then they'll look up "Straight to Hell" and love it and become Clash fans for life...! Best case scenario! lol ;)
iwantcompletecontrol 2 months ago
@iwantcompletecontrol Plus creative sampling advertises the originals. And sometimes if its a really obscure old song, it actually shines light on something that died long ago. Not saying that is the case with the clash, but that's pretty much how Hip-hop sampling works.
TheGoodChap 2 months ago
@iwantcompletecontrol Joe is dead, and the rights belong to the label, the clash members had nothing to do with it. That song is a fuckimg abomination.
BottledWaterr 2 months ago
@iwantcompletecontrol I believe the members of the Clash would give freely even if they didn't receive any credit.
chadmerritt1 2 months ago
@chadmerritt1 Well they were generous guys but everyone still likes to receive credit for their work. I remember reading that Joe Strummer was irked at the guy from Tears for Fears for using a line out of "Charlie Don't Surf" for their song "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." Strummer confronted the guy from the band and got a fiver out of him! LOL. Don't think it was mean-spirtied though (that's not Joe's style). The article is called "The Exile of Joe Strummer" if you wanna read it.

@iwantcompletecontrol the question shouldn't be weather she stole the song or not...the question should be: is the reason that Paper Planes became so popular based manly on the samples?
the other question i have than is: why is it MIA CAN'T seem to have a number 1 hit without The Clash? is it that she sucks at creating music, and thus her success isn't hers, but The Clash's?
tazmon122 2 months ago
@tazmon122 I dunno... I would say that Paper Planes became popular for a number of reasons, & I'm guessing it's mostly because of its association with Slumdog Millionaire which was hugely popular, plus the fact that people remember it as the song with the gunshot/cash register sound effects. The Clash sample certainly carried that song & is a HUGE part of it, but there are other factors to consider I suppose. I really dont think Strummer would've minded though so again I don't see the big deal.
iwantcompletecontrol 2 months ago
@iwantcompletecontrol It was famous because of the sound... The sound of the only fucking and that matters! WOOOO!
