This is the studio recording MINUS the horns and the vocals. Alice is doing the vocals Karaoke style. The band are miming. The horns actually obscured Glen's solo on the record. We can actually hear Glens amazing solo now!
School's Out on Top Of The Pops has a live vocal but a backing track as when miming was banned on that show and some bands weren't up to scratch the musicians union agreed bands could mine providing they were in the studio and had played on the song
interestingly those 2 fills didn't appear on the album so a slightly different backing track was used with not just the horn section missing but with those fills included which must have been recorded at the original Killer session or played on the day on OGWT but if we assume the whole thing apart from the vocal is mimed for the reason as with School's Out to do with Musician Union rules that backing tracks could only be used if the musicians who played on it were present hence no horn section
you need to listen again, there are 2 guitar licks just before the solo starting at 1.06 and ending at 1.12 these are not on the recording that appeared on Killer and are a different style and sound to Rick Derringer's solo that Glen mines to on OGWT but those 2 licks before the solo are played by Glen Buxton
Ooh, those 2 fills, you're right. Reasons for change 1) There are no trumpets in the track (as you mentioned earlier) because there are no trumpeters with the band, so it would be confusing to the people at home 2) The fills are part of the backing track, I know this because I just checked another outtake where the band mimes the whole song, and the fills exist in that video as well. Any questions?
the other take where they stop doesn't explain why on the take that went out on OGWT there are extra guitar fills which are played by Glen Buxton just before Rick Derringer's solo that weren't on the studio version.
@stevencrayn There are no extra riffs. Name the time that you are talking about. The only difference is that you can hear the guitar solo in this track.
there are extra guitar fills not on the studio version just before the Rick Derringer's solo that were played by Glen so the backing track isn't identical as there is also no horn section
I knew the vocal's were Live. But at first I thought it was the studio version music.Man they are awesome here.Listen to G.B. holy shit. This is 100% live, correct.I didn't here the horn section, so i'm pretty sure it's all live
@61SG I'm still confused, the vocal's are obviously Live. The guitar solo sounded identical to the studio version. So is this 100% live.Is there a backing track behind the live performance. Can't tell if I hear the horn section or not.Sometimes i can hear it sometimes I can't.Don't see any drum cover's over Neal's kit
@DARRINCONNOR1 It was live but the instruments were possibly overdubbed. I do have all the outtakes of this and they do have to stop playing (Alice sometimes continues singing or improvising.)
@DARRINCONNOR1 Alice is singing but everything else is the studio track. That is how most TV live appearances were done back then due to the limitations of TV studio sound equipment. It's still done today, in fact!
Luney Tune, I saw the Billion Dollar Babies show at Cleveland Music Hall in 1973, which was my last AC concert because I couldnt stand the hype (including the dancing tooth). Then he dumped the band and added his own musicians, at which time I vowed never to see them again. I was aghast when he brought Kip Winger onboard and knew that it was time to turn my back completely on Alice. You are right; the dancing tooth was originally Neal's sister but I thought Cheryl did as well.
This band was not only kick-ass extraordinary, they were also gorgeous!!! Saw them numerous times in Pittsburgh and Cleveland, and only stopped when Alice dumped his bandmates and took the name for himself...then added Kip Winger and the Dancing TOOTH to his concert repertoire!! KIP WINGER?? PLEASE!! If you want to see the REAL band at their creative best, check out the live version of "Black Juju" on Youtube...EXCELLENT!!! Alice..PUT THE BAND BACK TOGETHER & TOUR WITH THEM ONE MORE TIME!!!
@spanishcastles56 The dancing tooth was used on the Billion Dollar Babies Tour in 1973 (with the original Alice Cooper Group) not with Kip Winger. Neal Smith's sister/Dennis Dunaway's wife, Cindy Smith, played the dancing tooth.
The band was called 'Alice Cooper' - before Vincent took name for himself. You would think the brains at OGWT beyond such a mistake - but No! Is it live or is it a scam?
@MissEgasMoniz Well they were actually correct, they said "the piece, or the composer, or the performer" the band being the performer, therefore Alice Cooper is correct (I would prefer Alice Cooper Group). Also, Alice was often called Alice Cooper by the press, radio, news, etc. People didn't know him as Vincent Furnier. Nobody really called him "Vince," except family (mother, father, and sister).
In the studio version there is a horn section, and there is not one here as far as I can see. So, this appears to be a live performance, and a very good one at that.
@colourkim Sorry man but it's not. I have all of the outtakes, this version is a combination of different clips from outtakes. The audio is not the album track obviously but they used a recording of them from one of the outtakes (an outtake that featured them playing the whole song) and dubbed it over the final footage.
@LuneyTune72 maybe they did like the bbc used to do.. The artist would record a live version prior to the show and lip sync to that. I think had something to do with musicians unions or something..
@colourkim You are totally right. This is live all the way. Damn good to, especially when considering that Alice had such a problem with alcohol at this time, and for many years thereafter.
@colourkim Notice how his shirt is totally unzipped, then zipped all the way up, then unzipped. Alice Cooper was great live, don;t worry about it. And many times lead singers would sing over there, lip syncing, so it can be hard to tell.
@colourkim - yes this is all done to playback except for Alice's vocals. Glen couldn't play a guitar solo like that (in fact it was Rick Derringer who did the solo on the album.)
@Zenutheduck In defense of Buxton: Our band opened for his in Phoenix in the early 80's. He had a crappy Jaguar and a practice amp put through the PA. His band played all the Coop songs with the requisite riffs. He smoked all our weed, snorted all our coke, drank like a fish and KILLED! As soon as the notes for 18 popped out, you knew you were listening to the original. RIP
Only the original Alice Cooper Band for me, before Vincent legally changed his name to Alice Cooper. The band were originally called the Spiders and later the Nazz, but Todd Rundgren had already taken the name for his band, so they again changed their name, this time to Alice Cooper (circa '68/'69).
The original Alice Cooper band was the tightest group of players in the rock genre when they started out.
No way young Mr. Furnier could have got up on stage in THAT unitard if he didn't have those talented men playing like motherfuckers to his left and right.
Well actually this was recorded live. I don't know if the final cut was dubbed but I have the outtakes for this and Alice and the band are actually playing cus they have to stop to do another take every so often. It's proven in one outtake cus they come to an immediate stop after which Alice whispers some song on the mic.
You are right it is dubbed because all my outtakes are actually the different camera angles before it was pieced together. So they must have removed the live audio and replaced it with studio.
Right...And, I would hate for people to think that I don't like the song...I do.
I just get a bad taste in my mouth when bands pantomime like this. And it wasn't the band's choice, I'm sure. I blame the superficiality of the music industry.

And it looked so real too, it was amazing! And there was this old geezer sitting right in front of me, and he was just rocking haha it was so funny. Alice is freakin amazing!!

Yes but someone has already uploaded it to youtube. Also last time I tried to upload it it got deleted. The clip that I did upload from the show is from Prime Cuts (a DVD compliling many rare Alice clips and great facts). I suggest getting it to anyone who is an Alice fan.
Do you really? That's the first concert that my husband and I saw together. We were only friends back then but got together 28 years later. It was the Elected concert.
Gemma, I attended the 1973 Billion Dollar Babys' Concert tour ,live in beautiful Toronto,Canada...A very Rock City...this is where the chicken incident occured...Luv on ya!
Well I gotta fucking tell you, Marilyn Manson sucks Alice Cooper's fucking cock. Manson is nothing but a used fucking douche bag. Manson is a fucking fairy
It took a lot of years and total dedication to grow your hair that long. Straights putting you down and shit like that. Then punk rock came along and suddenly you were an old fart. Hair is just hair. I can't grow it any more anyway...
Marilyn Manson is just a nice guy, putting on a scary show, for a targeted crowd, to make some cash..no need to put him down for it..or compare him to a True Rock-N-Roll GOD Like ALICE.
And.. the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is a farce until this band is in. They have inducted all the real rock and rollers like James Taylor and the Lovin' Spoonful but not the Alice Cooper Band?
WOW! I saw this when originally shown on OGWT, parents going berserk and everything! No one comes close to the brilliance of Alice and his original band. M Manson is just a nasty piece of what's wrong with the world today and is on a different planet to the talent, versatility, sexiness and showmanship of Alice. love to all ACfans XX
I've seen Alice Cooper and Marilyn Manson both live. Marilyn's show isn't bad but he just comes across as a darker version of Alice Cooper. I'd pay to go see Alice again anyday. At least he has a sense of humor and his show is a hell of a lot more entertaining.
Wow. Here I was thinking the NY Dolls were true originals and here's Alice beating them to the punch by a few years. In particular the guitar sound is Thunder-esque to the nth degree. Oh well, I should have known they were ripping _somebody_ off.
Great number. Huge guitar solo. As he's called in Wormtown, Coopah rocks!

I like Alice's later solo stuff as well but nothing compares to the original Alice Cooper Band.

Well I gotta fucking tell you, Marilyn Manson sucks Alice Cooper's fucking cock. Manson is nothing but a used fucking douche bag. Manson is a fucking fairy

Indeed...the real deal. After Muscle of Love Cooper sucks.
