  • You say you're surprised about the aluminium foil stopping the PVC from melting and think it is because aluminium is a good conductor of heat and the heat is being dissipated tangentially...

    Actually this is the opposite of the purpose of the aluminium. The aluminium reflects most of the radiant heat energy and stops it being absorbed by the PVC, which is a poor reflector and would absorb a lot of this energy and melt it without the tape
