If I live forever, I will NEVER forget Diane Bish's Elgar that night in Second Baptist, Houston at that organ's dedication some 25 years ago! Diane's skill in taking that organ from pianissimo to full then back down completely was simply stunning. I was there, and NOT OVER IT YET! Hers is the benchmark!...a retired organist in Augusta, GA.

I hate how people bash the Bish. I mean, as a university organ student, I would probably not get away with playing pieces the way she plays them, but can we respect her for anything? She did a lot to bring organ music to people who would otherwise not hear it... and not like it. Yes, that is a very extreme yet mature and brilliantly planned execution. Diane is such a well behaved little girl at the organ. I don't think they make as many people like that these days.

Why is she looking on the floor towards the end of the performance had she lost an earing? also why is she al dressed up like a fairy on a Christmas tree, not necessary.
@MrJamest3333 Yes looking for the toe pistons. She designs and makes her own clothes in the neo-conservative style. Clothes and music are art for her, so why shouldn't she bring them together? Wouldn't you?
@MrJamest3333 She was feeling the music, Its what any good musicians do. If you have ever seen live performances, sometimes us musicians make funny faces too. As for her dressinf, i have no idea. But i agree she looks wierd.
I was sitting in Second Baptist that night some 25 years ago in Houston, and I am STILL NOT OVER this Nimrod performance YET! When Diane took that organ all the way from soft up to near full and then instantly back down to a whisper in those few final chords, all heaven opened! Yeap, her Elgar is as good as it gets, including her NOT needed glitz attire.
Don't care what you say, Diane knows what's she's doing!....signed, an organist, M.Mus. Northwestern University School of Music
Jesus, can someone tell the old lady to get back on the bus and leave the classics to professionals, that performance was awful, poor organ went to hell and back!
I love Nimrod and I love Diane Bish's playing. However, I am getting really upset each night when this happens;the music stops, the pic freezes and a little white circle emerges in the center of the pic and just goes round and round. Tonight poor Nimrod is really wrecked.
@raymondsymes212 I have no idea what you're talking about raymondsymes212. I have never criticized Diane Bish's playing or manner of dress. You must be thinking of someone else. I make it a practice not to criticize at all. If I don't like some particular thing, I simply ignore it. I do love to comment on what I like/love though.
@kasha1932 If you have the patience put the play button on hold then let three quarters of the music load. now click play and by the time the load baris at the end you should have heard the whole length of the music. YOU DO need patience but it worth it!
Diane Bish is one of my wonderful organists! I've watched those fingers simply slide from key to key....an it is NOT simple! The slower the melody, the more difficult is the playing...I took a few organ lessons...wish I had taken more! I do LOVE the organ.....all kinds....but I do get a real kick with all stops pulled!!!! LOL! Like to see things vibrate..
absolutely beautiful.. and when i think about it.. its the same piece that was played in the movie Elizabeth but the difference was..a woman was vocalizing the melody
I must say, I'm not any kind of bible-beating traditionalist--I love the fact that church music has added all sorts of modern styles and instrumentation...but NOTHING beats back the sound of an organ in the great acoustics of a church. Beautiful piece and rendition. Interesting irony, or maybe confirmation in this glitzy church setting, is that Nimrod was the founder of Babel (Babylon)-- Genesis 10

Is the organ still there? I tried to find it on this church's website but nothing came up! Would be such a shame to see a lovely instrument disappear into nothingness!
