What Cheney doesn't understand is that people don't hate him because he authorized torture, its because in American culture people don't like it when politicians use open displays of power, its seen as unpresidential, so if someone (a nongovernment official) said the same things that Cheney just said alot of people would agree, but I doubt that anyone changed their mind after hearing Cheney say it.
