There was a lot of wrong doing on both the Turkish and the Greeks part. The Greeks argue that the invasion was illegal but the Turks argue that it was in fact an intervention because Turkish Cypriots were being killed off in a Civil War, in an attempt to wipe them all out.
It's a beautiful island, on both sides. People should stop arguing and realise things were very different in those days.

The US was bombing cities in Serbia (Beograd, Nis etc.), to stop them from the ethnic cleansing that they were commiting in Kossovo. By the same logic they should have bombed Ankara, Smyrna and Istanbul to stop the Turks for the ethnic cleansing they were commiting in Cyprus. The British on the other hand were a Guarantor power and they had an obligation to stop the invasion, but they did nothing. This is the hypocricy that exists from the US and the UK.
The UK was to fullfill that obligation the sight of tanks troops and aircraft that was shiped in to cyprus by the british was amazing but they were told not to do anything so they had to sit and watch, a perfect word acquiescence as they did not do anything, after this choice was made even if they changed there minds to help they could not

Having said all that, it doesn't mean that Turkey is right or it has the right to occupy 37% of the land, to commit ethnic cleansing of 1/3 of the population or to be transfering thousands of Turks from Anatolia into Cyprus. Even if Turkey had the right to intervene, it didn't have the right to stay after the legality was restored in Cyprus, if that was what it bothered them. But that was only a cheap excuse for the Turks to commit all the other illegal things they did.

No one from thousands of years ago is alive today. No one can say for certain, but it is what artifacts have proven, and what is considered true. You can't predict timing 100% but artifacts that are left over can indicate how long ago they were left there. If the Greeks weren't the first on the island then where are the artifacts to prove this? There aren't any. The Greeks where the first on the Island, and have always been the main inhabitants.

There was a lot of wrong doing on both the Turkish and the Greeks part. The Greeks argue that the invasion was illegal but the Turks argue that it was in fact an intervention because Turkish Cypriots were being killed off in a Civil War, in an attempt to wipe them all out.
It's a beautiful island, on both sides. People should stop arguing and realise things were very different in those days.

The US was bombing cities in Serbia (Beograd, Nis etc.), to stop them from the ethnic cleansing that they were commiting in Kossovo. By the same logic they should have bombed Ankara, Smyrna and Istanbul to stop the Turks for the ethnic cleansing they were commiting in Cyprus. deryamehmet, the hatred started when the British were there and the Turks were serving the British during the independence strugle. They were sabotaging the strugle of the Greeks, killing Greeks while serving as policemen for the British and being their finks. The British were only too happy to oblige.
I'm not saying deryamehmet you don't have the right to be there and not be bothered, but the thousands Turks that Turkey brings from Anatolia don't have the right to be there.

Having said all that, it doesn't mean that Turkey is right or it has the right to occupy 37% of the land, to commit ethnic cleansing of 1/3 of the population or to be transfering thousands of Turks from Anatolia into Cyprus. Even if Turkey had the right to intervene, it didn't have the right to stay after the legality was restored in Cyprus, if that was what it bothered them. But that was only a cheap excuse for the Turks to commit all the other illegal things they did.

This is the sort of attitude that annoys me. For one, Cyprus is neither.. its Turkish & Greek Cypriots land. I'm Turkish & my father was born in Larnaca & my mother in Lefkosa(Nicosia) their great grandfathers were all Cyrpus born & lived happily together until a war broke out when Greeks were killing off Turks to own the whole land! Turks didn't invade or came over to get land!! they came over to protect the Turks being slaughtered! so thats why the island is divided now.

& War is a nasty thing period.. terrible things happened to both sides but if you look up which side lost more blood & lives its the Turks. If the Turks were coming to invade they could have easily taken the whole of Cyprus. I hope a lot of your are reading my comments & taking it in!

It breaks my heart to see you guys arguing about past history. Why don't you all just forget the past, and instead try to find a way forward. Fact, Cyprus wanted to be part of Greece. Fact, Turkey invaded illegally. Fact. We are all fucked and live on a divided island. And hopefully when all the fascist assholes from both sides finally disappear, then the new generations can look for a way forward. Pretty sure that 1600 B.C. came before 1571, so obviously Greek Cypriots would have been on the island in 1571 since they had been there for thousands of years before then.

No one from thousands of years ago is alive today. No one can say for certain, but it is what artifacts have proven, and what is considered true. You can't predict timing 100% but artifacts that are left over can indicate how long ago they were left there. If the Greeks weren't the first on the island then where are the artifacts to prove this? There aren't any. The Greeks where the first on the Island, and have always been the main inhabitants.

Look at the dates. I wonder what came first. First mention of Turks is not that far in the past. Not as far as 1600 BC and even before that when Cyprus was populated.
So if the Turks weren't even in Turkey at the time then what did they do? Come from Asia just to populate Cyprus and leave no settlements at the time at anywhere along the way and not leave any traces of their lives in Cyprus? Get Real.
