SHIT! I heard that sound and reacted exactly the same!! Is this still available? Can you buy Playstation 1 still? Hang on, let me watch the rest of the review lol...
Oh WOW man! I remember scores of people huddled around the game when it first came out in '80. I also remember the blisters from the joystick from the hours; and a lotta quarters; of playing this old school classic!
Oh WOW man! I remember scores of people huddled around the game when it first came out in '80. I also remember the blisters from the joystick from the hours; and a lotta quarters; of playing this classic!
I Downloaded Defender on Xbox Live Arcade. It only cost 400points (less than £4.00) and I love it. I was gonna buy another copy for Xbox Game Room but it's not available anymore. As a teenager I once witnessed someone CLOCK the actual machine!!!!! I was hooked on defender from there on.
Yes, the arcade had a reverse button on the left thumb. The joystick was just up/down. My cousin could turn the high score over. He could simply play as long as he wanted on a quarter. I have no idea how much I spent on this... Wonderful memories!!
I cannot agree more. I was so into it I played over 7 hours in one game, I think I clocked it about 6 times.
I live in Brighton and unbeleivalby there is a Defender in a local pub which I go in and take a walk down memory lane. Nowhere near as good as I used to be at it I'm sad to say!!
pity they never thought about putting updated versions on the disc, like they did with the atari jaguar releases, gives you better replay value.
find my self playing the updated version more know than the original arcade version.
both the jaguar and the ps1 have arcade perfect versions, and there is nothing to put between them.
these pack compolation are a bit of a rip off for the full price they were/are asking. with out some goodies or enhanced new versions, i prefered not be ripped off
@Luigi84289 so playing the game in the exact same way for the hundreth time doesn't make you wish for extras? I can name hundreds of ways Defender could be improved.
Nice review, great graphic quality on the video. This version is remarkable for how close it resembles the arcade version that I grew up playing! I'm going to have to find Williams Greatest Arcade Hits collection for the PS1 my brother-in-law gave me.

WOW The PS version is so alike the original arcade version. The sounds are spot on! Im 40 years old now but have just purchased a stand up arcade machine for my front room. I used to be able to clock this machine when I was 13. I spent a small fortune getting to that level though. Nice clip. Thanks for sharing.
I'm really only buying Williams for Defender/2 for the PS. I paid an arm and leg for it as well but I couldnt wait any longer for one to turn up here. It's probably my fave spacies game of all time. Everything about it is perfect. The PS version is as rare as hen's teeth here. Excellent review, thanks.
i love this game. i played it that much in a arcade i got blisters on me fingers lol the amount i put in was well loads of dosh id love to play it again in a stand up mode [williams Defender FTW]
@bazfanv2 you know what he means...he only plays bought legal copies of a game. by emulator he obviously means he doesnt use free downloaded computer emulators and downloaded roms
The Sega Genesis Williams Arcade Classics is excellent to play and the Genesis controller works great. I still play Defender and Stargate on the Genesis after all these years.
when this came out arcades only had space invaders or crap games mainly in black and white, so this was a revelation on so many levels - with its colour, its movement over the planet, the scanner, the absolutely amazing sounds(for the time) and the fact the aliens are intelligent(until you figure out how they work) and therefore its hard! totally brilliant!
wait a second. did this arcade game "expert" just say that the Playstation version is the closest version to the arcade version? ever hear of MAME, buddy?
Playstation emulators are not 100% accurate. see MK 1- 3 for PS2. not 100% accurate, whereas MAME is.
Defender cabinets can be found almost anywhere. where are you looking?
@kwakdeuze Dont have camocorder although i can email you pictures of my high score tables which i sent to other tubers who didnt believe me. Just send me your email address and ill be happy to oblige.cheers
MAME has most of the versions of Defender - the one shown is known as "red label" - the other "labels" are inferior versions which can usually be identified by the demo screen in which a Lander is said to be worth 100 points, when it's 150 in the game.
Only reason I bought a playstation 1 was to play defender after my original upright died on me 14 years ago . Robotron actually more fun and annoying! Games these days all about the graphics and are less fun. More games like this please Eugene!
I was watching this out loud in my uncle's house... and he heard the noise and came STORMING in!...... "WHATS THAT!?? IS IT DEFENDER!?!??".. and I was like holy crap yes.. why.. He then turned into his 12 year old self again..
Oh man this game brings me back to you youth. A true classic game, i spent hours and money on this game. we had to line up to play this in the arcade. i love the sound effects. Thanks for this.
yeah i loved it so much i bought a stand up and a cocktail two player arcade units sold em later electronics were a bit dodgy. the software was amazing u could set the machine and almost mode it. it also had an accounting function with statistics for arcade owners so the machine could beat the good players. i still got the original instruction book. defender was the first advanced game ever. remember pac man and galaxian were the main alternatives at that time.
CHANGE THE CONTROLS not left /right .... left shoulder to reverse, fire square, thrust triangle (hyper space/smart bomb)the other 2 buttons. it is very close to oringinal set up after a while.
yeah, really good games. if an arcade dropped from space into into my house, id rather it be full of old 80s and early 90s games....and no modern crap
sure i like modern games too...but i LOVE the old ones. iv never stopped playing them so nostalgia takes a back seat for me, i never feel it cus i never stoppped playing the games to begin with
This is the first "real" console version. Others where of course, just ports. This version uses an emulator using the original arcade data. I read this on either the box or instruction manual may back in the 90's.
Best version of this game is the Atari 8 bit computers...Atari 400, 800, 800xl, 130xe. You can get an emulator and play for free on the PC. The controls feel so much better then on the PS.
Will you resist a click? If you're interested in earning some money please view my profile. So far I've gotten over $100.00 in one week along with two Xbox 360 games. At least try it. :-)
Arcades must have made $1000's from me in the early 80's b8ut I did master a few games such as Defender,Missile command and crazy climber. The arcade owners knew when they saw me comming in that they would not be making any money with those ones(games) that night as 1 quarter is all I needed to play for hours. Two or three million pionts per game..lol
that's one of the closest matches of defender i've seen on a home game console! even has the great sounds! i'd like to see modern gamers play the original!
Play Williams Arcade Greatest Hits for the Sega Genesis. The Sega Genesis controller is perfect for Defender - comfortable and responsive. Better than the arcade.
Frackin awesome techno tracks, Nemises upgraded was fracking awesome, and no dammage from ramming the ground...now if only i can find it on youtube. Some lvl's were just too hard. (Juggernaught mainly)
Yeah, I never finished it. I figured because it was because I never started using newer ships, just upgrading the Defender, and eventually I hit the wall.
Yah, the starting ship was Ok, but was vastly under powered compared to the other fighters. So do you agree that some lvl's were a bit too...well not fun?
I have this on Midway Arcade Treasures for the PS2. Great collection of old arcade games. I grew up in the early 90's, so to get to play these iconic games is nice. I recommend it to fans of Paperboy,Rootbeer Tapper,Defender,Defender2,Joust1,Joust2,Mortal Kombat II, MKIII, just to name a few.
There is an excellent version (arcade perfect) of Defender on Williams Hits for Sega Genesis as well!!! I would emphasize the Genesis version since it outputs true 15 KHz signal, meaning it is the same as arcade original. With PS3 you are stuck with streched HD or interlaced video modes - which IS NOT CORRECT.
I finally saw a defender arcade cabinet a couple of years ago for our College Spring Fair and I couldn't get anywhere with it because of the seven buttons of control.
Williams arcade games had the absolute coolest sound effects known to man.
