  • Williams arcade games had the absolute coolest sound effects known to man.

  • classic game

  • will this play on ps3?

  • You didn't review Defender for the Atari 2600... Stella did.

  • You didn't review Defender for the Atari 2600... Stella did.

  • SHIT! I heard that sound and reacted exactly the same!! Is this still available? Can you buy Playstation 1 still? Hang on, let me watch the rest of the review lol...

  • Were you tired when you reviewed this?

  • Comment removed

  • Oops, i was wrong. there is a reverser button. I guess i'm getting old.

  • There wasn't a button for reversing, a 4 way joystick was used for up, down and reverse controls. I love these classic game reviews.

  • No Inviso?

  • I AM SINISTAR! RUN COWARD!

  • my favorite arcade game of all time! defender kicks ass! used to go to my friends' house and play at his arcade. great times!

  • Oh WOW man! I remember scores of people huddled around the game when it first came out in '80. I also remember the blisters from the joystick from the hours; and a lotta quarters; of playing this old school classic!

  • Oh WOW man! I remember scores of people huddled around the game when it first came out in '80. I also remember the blisters from the joystick from the hours; and a lotta quarters; of playing this classic!

  • The sound of the PODS breaking apart = EPIC

  • I agree about the sounds of the 80s arcade games. They hypnotize me at times.

  • The explosions look awesome!

  • i thought there was one for XBox Live

  • I Downloaded Defender on Xbox Live Arcade. It only cost 400points (less than £4.00) and I love it. I was gonna buy another copy for Xbox Game Room but it's not available anymore. As a teenager I once witnessed someone CLOCK the actual machine!!!!! I was hooked on defender from there on.

  • There is not selled in JAPAN

    Very nice movie :D

1980 is Junior highschool student oops

  • This is one of my all time favorites! I actually preferred Stargate (sometimes called Defender II) which had more enemy types and the stargates.

  • @DavidMolnarProd1 yes! And that "inviso" button!

  • I was thinking of buying a PS3. But only if I can play defender on it. Can I play this PS1 game on a PS3?

  • @mattx1969 Unfortunately you cannot play PS1 games on the PS3 unless it was ported to the PS3

  • Word up

  • DOS is classic game

  • this was called stargate where i was in england

  • @nibelung34343 The one I played in England was called Defender

  • Yes, the arcade had a reverse button on the left thumb. The joystick was just up/down. My cousin could turn the high score over. He could simply play as long as he wanted on a quarter. I have no idea how much I spent on this... Wonderful memories!!

  • In my opinion, the early 80's had the best arcade games.

  • just play LIFEFORCE..its better

  • this game is........ well, it's DEFENDER!!!!!

  • IM 41 AND I LOVED THIS GAME IN THE 80S THE BEST FUCKING ARCADE GAME EVER!!!

  • @tonysalsa100

I cannot agree more. I was so into it I played over 7 hours in one game, I think I clocked it about 6 times.

I live in Brighton and unbeleivalby there is a Defender in a local pub which I go in and take a walk down memory lane. Nowhere near as good as I used to be at it I'm sad to say!!

  • This is the hardest game ever made.

  • I love the sound of it! XD its awesome!

  • I SUCKED at this game! There were to many buttons for my tiny brain to handle.

  • pity they never thought about putting updated versions on the disc, like they did with the atari jaguar releases, gives you better replay value.

find my self playing the updated version more know than the original arcade version.

both the jaguar and the ps1 have arcade perfect versions, and there is nothing to put between them.

these pack compolation are a bit of a rip off for the full price they were/are asking. with out some goodies or enhanced new versions, i prefered not be ripped off

  • @cant1rac That's blasphemy dude. Defender is perfect so is Robotron.

  • @Luigi84289 never said they werent perfect mate, just prefered a few updated versions for the money, love the versions on it their faultless

  • @Luigi84289 so playing the game in the exact same way for the hundreth time doesn't make you wish for extras? I can name hundreds of ways Defender could be improved.

  • Nice review, great graphic quality on the video. This version is remarkable for how close it resembles the arcade version that I grew up playing! I'm going to have to find Williams Greatest Arcade Hits collection for the PS1 my brother-in-law gave me.

  • Yes greatest game ever, That is why I did a remake. Check it out!

  • WOW The PS version is so alike the original arcade version. The sounds are spot on! Im 40 years old now but have just purchased a stand up arcade machine for my front room. I used to be able to clock this machine when I was 13. I spent a small fortune getting to that level though. Nice clip. Thanks for sharing.

  • descent ship

  • And I thought that Dropzone and Super Dropzone by Archer MacLean were originals. :-(

  • I hate the Nes and Snes because the sounds are always earrape

  • I have the REAL thing on my laptop (MAME), it is probably the real thing here as well.

  • I'm really only buying Williams for Defender/2 for the PS. I paid an arm and leg for it as well but I couldnt wait any longer for one to turn up here. It's probably my fave spacies game of all time. Everything about it is perfect. The PS version is as rare as hen's teeth here. Excellent review, thanks.

  • i love this game. i played it that much in a arcade i got blisters on me fingers lol the amount i put in was well loads of dosh id love to play it again in a stand up mode [williams Defender FTW]

  • Mark, you say you never use emulators, but your using an emulator right now, how do you think they get these games across.

  • @bazfanv2 you know what he means...he only plays bought legal copies of a game. by emulator he obviously means he doesnt use free downloaded computer emulators and downloaded roms

  • The Sega Genesis Williams Arcade Classics is excellent to play and the Genesis controller works great. I still play Defender and Stargate on the Genesis after all these years.

  • when this came out arcades only had space invaders or crap games mainly in black and white, so this was a revelation on so many levels - with its colour, its movement over the planet, the scanner, the absolutely amazing sounds(for the time) and the fact the aliens are intelligent(until you figure out how they work) and therefore its hard! totally brilliant!

  • wait a second. did this arcade game "expert" just say that the Playstation version is the closest version to the arcade version? ever hear of MAME, buddy?

Playstation emulators are not 100% accurate. see MK 1- 3 for PS2. not 100% accurate, whereas MAME is.

Defender cabinets can be found almost anywhere. where are you looking?

  • @pguest1080

Use the namco arcade stick and the playstation version, it is the best. I scored a million four times on the original Defender back in the 80s.

  • @NHBvids3 that's a nice piece of work right there... game is nearly impossible

  • @NHBvids3

I use it also to play robotron and stargate. Can get millions on all 3 games using this stick on mame

  • @spriggsy100

Where did you upload your video proof ?

  • @kwakdeuze Dont have camocorder although i can email you pictures of my high score tables which i sent to other tubers who didnt believe me. Just send me your email address and ill be happy to oblige.cheers

  • @spriggsy100

Record gameplay. If you you do not have chinese google.

  • @kwakdeuze

What has chinese google got to do with ANYTHING?

  • @pguest1080 I think he was just referring to his collection.

  • @pguest1080

He means closest without using emulators.

  • @pguest1080 He doesn't use emulators.

  • @pguest1080 Agree about the mame thing however i havent seen a decent Defender cab on Ebay in the UK for ages.

  • @pguest1080 What?! The whole MAME program is just a version of Defender?!

Bullshit. MAME is not a commercial release...

  • I love the sound effects!

  • MAME has most of the versions of Defender - the one shown is known as "red label" - the other "labels" are inferior versions which can usually be identified by the demo screen in which a Lander is said to be worth 100 points, when it's 150 in the game.

  • "I must confess that the sounds from the video games you named are unmatched."

  • I just loooove this sound FX, it was one of the main reasons I use to play it @ the arcades.

    Excellent!

  • How did they do those awesome sound effects?

  • modern games got me into multiplayer so I can kiss playing story modes over and over again goodbye

  • Same guy that made Defender made Robotron 2084. Eugene Jarvis made Defender, Stargate, Robotron 2084, and SmashTV.

  • omg this game sounds so sexy :D

  • Only reason I bought a playstation 1 was to play defender after my original upright died on me 14 years ago . Robotron actually more fun and annoying! Games these days all about the graphics and are less fun. More games like this please Eugene!

  • You could probably find this game for 5 bucks, while 360/PS3/wii would charge you 10 bucks PER game.

  • I was watching this out loud in my uncle's house... and he heard the noise and came STORMING in!...... "WHATS THAT!?? IS IT DEFENDER!?!??".. and I was like holy crap yes.. why.. He then turned into his 12 year old self again..

THE SOUNDS of this game are sweet by the way!

  • @jcynavarro they sound like a game should sound aye haha

  • @jcynavarro im calling BS on that

  • @jcynavarro LOL that is so funny!

  • Are you good at shooting baiters in Defender?

Oh yeah, guess you are a Masterbator ahahahahahahahahah

sorry, I had a flashback to 1982 and 8th grade.

  • Oh man this game brings me back to you youth. A true classic game, i spent hours and money on this game. we had to line up to play this in the arcade. i love the sound effects. Thanks for this.

  • yeah i loved it so much i bought a stand up and a cocktail two player arcade units sold em later electronics were a bit dodgy. the software was amazing u could set the machine and almost mode it. it also had an accounting function with statistics for arcade owners so the machine could beat the good players. i still got the original instruction book. defender was the first advanced game ever. remember pac man and galaxian were the main alternatives at that time.

  • 1:20

    DROID!!

  • The good old games...

  • This is close because its the original code.

CHANGE THE CONTROLS not left /right .... left shoulder to reverse, fire square, thrust triangle (hyper space/smart bomb)the other 2 buttons. it is very close to oringinal set up after a while.

  • Do you like this game?I don't like it at all,it's very old......but all your reviews ROCKS,I really LOVE them!!!!!!

  • How can you not appreciate the classic games that Mark loves above all others?!!

I mean, both him and many other people know that they're downright classics and pawn the crap out of any modern day big budget XBOX360 title!

  • yeah, really good games. if an arcade dropped from space into into my house, id rather it be full of old 80s and early 90s games....and no modern crap

sure i like modern games too...but i LOVE the old ones. iv never stopped playing them so nostalgia takes a back seat for me, i never feel it cus i never stoppped playing the games to begin with

  • The sound effects in this game are fucking amazing!!! I LOVE IT !!!

  • This game kicks ass! When it came out it was ahead of it's time in my opinion.

  • The Williams Greatest Hits disk is also for the Sega Saturn.

  • It's also for the Mega Drive and Saturn. Just because he didn't mention that doesn't make him an idiot.

  • I fail to see why you're so passionate about a simple mistake. Or maybe he knew but didn't think it was important?

  • yes - its not as good

  • Really??

    You're kidding?!

I gotta get that version ASAP!

  • I got this game to reverse

use L1 or L2 and turn OFF left/right directional via directional cross(so u just got up/down)

    thrust left button maybe square

    triangle fire (reverse if required)

    right button circle smart bomb

bottom x hyper space(i not got any playstion controller to hand.

this will emulate the controls pretty closly and after a couple goes its just as fluid

  • I still have my PS1,and it is still working!

  • This is the first "real" console version. Others where of course, just ports. This version uses an emulator using the original arcade data. I read this on either the box or instruction manual may back in the 90's.

  • man, the new 2002 version of defender sucks....

    nothing like this one....

  • Best version of this game is the Atari 8 bit computers...Atari 400, 800, 800xl, 130xe. You can get an emulator and play for free on the PC. The controls feel so much better then on the PS.

  • u no some 1 is stealing ur vids

  • one of the first games i ever played

  • Arcades must have made $1000's from me in the early 80's b8ut I did master a few games such as Defender,Missile command and crazy climber. The arcade owners knew when they saw me comming in that they would not be making any money with those ones(games) that night as 1 quarter is all I needed to play for hours. Two or three million pionts per game..lol

  • that's one of the closest matches of defender i've seen on a home game console! even has the great sounds! i'd like to see modern gamers play the original!

  • My favorite video game of all time.

  • Play Williams Arcade Greatest Hits for the Sega Genesis. The Sega Genesis controller is perfect for Defender - comfortable and responsive. Better than the arcade.

  • I find it funny that the games we loved as a kid were so damn hard, sorry I mean challenging.

  • Best game in history, I never get bored of it

  • This and Robotron makes your heart really pump unlike no other game since.

  • If you ever get a chance, try the remade Defender for the XBOX/PS2. It's a surprisingly amusing game!

  • Frackin awesome techno tracks, Nemises upgraded was fracking awesome, and no dammage from ramming the ground...now if only i can find it on youtube. Some lvl's were just too hard. (Juggernaught mainly)

  • Yeah, I never finished it. I figured because it was because I never started using newer ships, just upgrading the Defender, and eventually I hit the wall.

  • Yah, the starting ship was Ok, but was vastly under powered compared to the other fighters. So do you agree that some lvl's were a bit too...well not fun?

  • I have this on Midway Arcade Treasures for the PS2. Great collection of old arcade games. I grew up in the early 90's, so to get to play these iconic games is nice. I recommend it to fans of Paperboy,Rootbeer Tapper,Defender,Defender2,Joust1,Joust2,Mortal Kombat II, MKIII, just to name a few.

  • I remember when I was 7 I got to level 103 on this game. I was never able to do it again.

  • This brings back many good memories.

  • god damn ads everywhere ya fucking look

  • yeah specialy the ones about the end of the world really suck...

  • Awesome! The PS1 is classic

  • There is an excellent version (arcade perfect) of Defender on Williams Hits for Sega Genesis as well!!! I would emphasize the Genesis version since it outputs true 15 KHz signal, meaning it is the same as arcade original. With PS3 you are stuck with streched HD or interlaced video modes - which IS NOT CORRECT.

  • I agree, early 80s games were really special in many ways.

  • First onh!! ;-)

  • no your not

  • HAHA the joke written at the end is great.

  • Damn! What was that game!

The game in the beggining when he's flipping through. You can hear a voice from a circular demon head yelling out BEWARE!

I remember it from my childhood but can't remember what it's called : (

    Please assist. Thanks.

  • NVM, found it.

    Sinistar :D

  • Sinistar?

  • I love the old arcade sounds too - I love recreating them in my synth program!

  • how do you do it? how do you release a new video almost every day? you are amazing!

  • its a company, and they dont release the vids directly after they make them lol

  • i love the sounds

  • its kinda like a song.. all we need are some death metal vocals and we got cybercore!

  • lol yup

  • YES!!! PSX Review for once....even tho its old arcade game -.-

  • You are right... the Arcade version had the button that reversed direction. I HATED playing the arcade. Too many buttons!

  • I finally saw a defender arcade cabinet a couple of years ago for our College Spring Fair and I couldn't get anywhere with it because of the seven buttons of control.

  • Shut up guys.

    Great reviews. :-)

  • lol

  • 1st

  • FAIL!!!

  • FAIL!!!

  • 1st

  • WINNER!!!
