  • wearing out my sheen?

  • This song came into my mind after so many years, and here it is. Thanks for posting it.

  • the COLOURFIELD 1987

  • cold stone cold funk right here. the man has been emulated but never duplicated, Sly was truly a one of a kind.

  • im sorry, but who is this man in this picture?

  • @mh1909sci dr funkenstein ;)

  • im sorry, but who is this man in this picture?

  • Damn - this vibe never gets old - s'all good !!!

  • Now, I wana run away from the earth. lol from japan.

  • cocaine is a helluva drug

  • love that song

  • people just turn back to that kind of music and stop today's s**t..

  • there's a riot goin' on it's my favorite album of the family stone and this songs is so great !

  • @cydcombs. first album i ever owned. I was in 6th grade and a girl brought it to school and asked me if I wanted it. She said she played it and didn't like it any of the tunes. FAMILY AFFAIR RUNNIN AWAY etc etc. every once in a while i see her on facebook and still thank her. lol

  • He had a perfect sense of how to blend the simple vocals with the cheery music in the back ground. What a stunning arrangement!

  • Sly was the original Funk Master

  • cynthia's a great and underrated trumpeter

  • yeah the whole tune is modulated down about a quarter-step or so because of his obsessive overdubbing... this tune hits the spot

  • @macwaffle

I don't think Sly was obsessed with overdubbing... The Family Stone's live performances are incredibly close to the studio recordings; BUT during There's A Riot Going On Sly was mostly off his head, getting into coke big time (freebasing when nobody knew what crack was yet), getting girls he'd pick up to sing on the work in progress, Larry Graham & Greg Errico were leaving the band, & many overdubs on the album were done by Billy Preston & Bobby Womack... I have no complaints!

  • Wow Real Musicians and Music No Tracks!!

    Ole Sckool Funk.

  • @RonnieSLM

While you are certainly correct that these are indeed "real" musicians making great music, your no tracks comment could not be further from the truth as this album i chopped and cut up on so many tapes it ain't funny

  • Ooooooh! @ 0:04 so that's where Bone Thugs N Harmony got thier style from... :)

  • I was just entering high school when this came out. GREAT MEMORIES

  • If i were to pick one song that represented 1971 this would be it. The depressive beauty of the whole album "There's a Riot Going On" reflected Sly Stones dicovering that his pot of gold at the rainbow end was a ghetto mirage.(as many critics stated in 1971) The lyrics here proved that. Sly was in bad shape. George Clinton/Funkadelic was hugely influenced by "There's a Riot.."

  • @taildragger53 Very well said. This is the best post I've read in awhile.

  • @taildragger53 no doubt.

  • Poignant and sad song.

  • I think I was 18 when this came out. Memories....

  • @cydcombs : I was 4 when this came out . My baby sitter used to play this song. Memories.....

  • Nice fro :)
