How does this process work with non latex materials? I want to get into the special effects indutry as a career, but I'm deathly allergic to latex. I know hypoallergenic gloves and masks wil protect me when I apply them to other people, but to start out I want to apply them to myself. (Until I get a willing slav...uh I mean volunteer)
I'm going to be Dren from splice next year for halloween and I';m trying to make the cravese in her scalp and forhead, I'm takeing a bald cap and puting laytex on the cap and over the side but it's bugging the crap out of me cause I cant get it the right shape and i'm picky and wont stop until i like i mean relly like it.... Any Tips???
@MegaAnimeJunkie I wouldn't use this method for a bigger piece like a forehead and scalp. You would be better off trying a full face casting with algenate, making a plaster mold from that casting, sculpting with putty on the casting and then creating a latex piece from that. The process is pretty extensive, but if your really picky, it would be the way to go. You can find instructions all over online with the algenate products.
How do you apply the liquid latex to the inside of the mold? Paintbrush? Sorry if this is a stupid question I've never done anything like this before or worked with latex.
@thesexualsoup Use a decent cheap paintbrush for the first few layers. You can use a bristle brush or a sponge brush. A sponge brush will give you better coating, but it's hard to get in the crevices. After the first few coats, it's easier to pour a little in the mold and roll the mold around in your hands, letting the latex cover it by gravity.
@shollia If the piece is much larger than wherever you're applying it, stuff the latex with cotton to give it shape so it won't collapse, apply the prosthetic with spirit gum, and blend it in with makeup, the same way you would with store bought pieces. If you do a good job of blending out the edges when you make your piece, it will actually be easier to blend than a store bought one.
this is great, i was just wondering, is this mold re-usable? I wanted to make one but if it turns out cool i'll want to use it again, would i need to make a whole new mold? Thanks!
@omgz0mbie The mold is totally reusable. Just make sure you get all of the clay out of the mold before you do your casting. The clay can mold over time, but the plaster won't. The mold can be reused many times as long as it is kept dry and clean in between castings.

Nice tutorial. But how do you apply it and make it look like it's a part of you and not just a floppy hollow piece of latex glued to your face?
