Funny... except that I actually know someone who's a real data hoarder. He can't delete emails (even spam) and has become virtually incapable of sorting through them or responding, and has old computers everywhere for fear of losing files. A real datahoarder can spend hours incessantly making sure that his/her files are perfectly lined up with no gaps and no fragments. It's true! I was going to go pick up my gf one afternoon, and found myself transferring files for absolutely no reason. And this one drive I'm defragging right now has 342,828 individual files. I have no idea what they are, but it sure is fun to watch the defragger progress through drive.

No one really has to know you have a problem, and if somebody sees all the drives, say you got them at a flea market and will be selling them on ebay or something. Datahoarding let's you keep your disease inside your head where it doesn't upset other folks. And, like a real hoarder, if a single file gets lost or damaged or deleted, I get super upset and must go and re-download it immediately. Along with datahoarding comes obsessive defragging behavior.

The old-school variant of a datahoarder is a bibliophile. Somebody that collects books. I used to do that, I had (have) 90,000+ books that I'd like to get digitized and put on a few hard disks. And modern psychotherapists will sometimes tell a severe hoarder to get a computer and start collecting files, just so that he can get the house cleaned up. Datahoarding is real, and should be incorporated into the next DSM. And the thing is, this is so easy to hide, much easier to hide than beating off.

Some are even half-completed and early terminated downloadz. results of prime number computations, nasa research pdfs, marine biology pdfs. screensavers, every version of every graphics utility, those are examples of crap sitting on one or two drives. I have a few drives storing directories and catalogs of the whole collection. millions of ebooks from the official gutenberg project. firmware dumps of classic computing computers. Atari games.

I'm one of them, I got boxes and boxes of hard disks. The amount of drives I purchase annually has gone down, but then the drives have gotten larger.

I have 9 of the large rubbermaid tubs full of drives. Granted they don't take up too much space, about 1/2 the closet, so physically that ain't too bad.

Much of it consists of my emails from the 80's and 90's till now. All my pc-xt dos utilities and tons of pr0n (that I don't watch), thousands of folders of pics of everything --

The key is organization. Every thing should have its place, and once you organize similar things, then you can determine which ones are better than others and throw out the worst. Big items should be dealt with first. Ebay and craigslist make replacement very easy if ever needed.
