Funny... except that I actually know someone who's a real data hoarder. He can't delete emails (even spam) and has become virtually incapable of sorting through them or responding, and has old computers everywhere for fear of losing files. He's also a real-life hoarder, but the online version is just as sad in many ways.
You know, after looking at this I thought I was bad at data hoarding, looking through the secondary partition on my 500GB hard drive that is about a quarter-full.
This is just like me. Anytime I see any funny picture, video or anything I think I might want to view it in the future so I save it. I save almost every Youtube video I ever watch for example.
A real datahoarder can spend hours incessantly making sure that his/her files are perfectly lined up with no gaps and no fragments. It's true! I was going to go pick up my gf one afternoon, and found myself transferring files for absolutely no reason. And this one drive I'm defragging right now has 342,828 individual files. I have no idea what they are, but it sure is fun to watch the defragger progress through drive.
No one really has to know you have a problem, and if somebody sees all the drives, say you got them at a flea market and will be selling them on ebay or something. Datahoarding let's you keep your disease inside your head where it doesn't upset other folks. And, like a real hoarder, if a single file gets lost or damaged or deleted, I get super upset and must go and re-download it immediately. Along with datahoarding comes obsessive defragging behavior.
No one really has to know you have a problem, and if somebody sees all the drives, say you got them at a flea market and will be selling them on ebay or something. And, like a real hoarder, if a single file gets lost or damaged or deleted, I get super upset and must go and re-download it immediately. Along with datahoarding comes obsessive defragging behavior.
The old-school variant of a datahoarder is a bibliophile. Somebody that collects books. I used to do that, I had (have) 90,000+ books that I'd like to get digitized and put on a few hard disks. And modern psychotherapists will sometimes tell a severe hoarder to get a computer and start collecting files, just so that he can get the house cleaned up. Datahoarding is real, and should be incorporated into the next DSM. And the thing is, this is so easy to hide, much easier to hide than beating off.
all sorts of warez that I know I'll never use. Some are even half-completed and early terminated downloadz. results of prime number computations, nasa research pdfs, marine biology pdfs. screensavers, every version of every graphics utility, those are examples of crap sitting on one or two drives. I have a few drives storing directories and catalogs of the whole collection. millions of ebooks from the official gutenberg project. firmware dumps of classic computing computers. Atari games.
I'm one of them, I got boxes and boxes of hard disks. The amount of drives I purchase annually has gone down, but then the drives have gotten larger.
I have 9 of the large rubbermaid tubs full of drives. Granted they don't take up too much space, about 1/2 the closet, so physically that ain't too bad.
Much of it consists of my emails from the 80's and 90's till now. All my pc-xt dos utilities and tons of pr0n (that I don't watch), thousands of folders of pics of everything --
I think I'm definatly one of these .. some of the files I have on my comp must be over 10 years old by this point (I transfer everything from the old comp to the new one when I upgrade).
I definitely know people who hoard music files. People with 300+ gigs of mp3s, so much of which they'll never listen to, and might not even like if they did.
@Catapult82 I compulsively download HD movies and lossless discographies. I also hate getting rid of old games and movies I've downloaded, so I simply store them. I've got 4 1TB drives, with another 4 2TB drives coming in the next year. Am I a data hoarder?
@drumstyx6464 yup and so am I but I'm getting better key is if you don't use it in 3 months your probably never going to so delete it pm me if you want more tips
Yeah, it's totally real, and there really are enough flying toaster screen savers to fill up a few hard drives, and Best Buy really does have a 'data hoarder' unit, and that guy really was going to throw those mice out the window, and Santa Claus exists and he and the Easter bunny are going to come to your house in a space ship and tell you how to unlock Luigi in Super Mario 64.
Thanks guys!! anyone who can make me laugh and smile in a mere 2 min. seg. deserves more than just a thank you. Hope at least this response keeps your creativity going. A&E may even see it, who knows, shit happens, wish you the best.
I'm sick of all these shows showing mental rejects, like hoarders or extremely obese folk. I'd just as soon throw them out with the trash than waste days and weeks trying to "rehabilitate" them.
I have half of my data backed up on external drives I'm not even counting. If I wiped a drive I'd spend months finding replacements for all the files lost.
I think most of us have some guilt here. We always think we're going to need something in the future. Or we have baby pix that we just can't throw out, or clothes we might fit once we lose weight, or whatever...
The key is organization. Every thing should have its place, and once you organize similar things, then you can determine which ones are better than others and throw out the worst. Big items should be dealt with first. Ebay and craigslist make replacement very easy if ever needed.
Omg i can relate to this 110%

Wow, that really is a mental disorder. You saw how frantic he became every time Bill suggested deleting something or throwing away his old mice.
He missed his brother's wedding because of his addiction. He has 6 hard drives that only hold screensavers of flying toasters!
He must be single. No decent woman would put up with that kind of obsessive behavior.
Someone should scan their brains and see if there's something wrong with them that can be identified.

Compulsive porn hoarding is a
mental disorder marked by
an obsessive need to acquire
and keep porn, even if
the porn is worthless,
hazardous, or unsanitary.
More than 300 million people
are compulsive porn hoarders.
