1. Its a spitfire core - max stock speed was 1000 Mhz - no way it would even boot at 3.8 Ghz on air cooling, no matter what the core voltage is.

Before this, the Duron record was just over 3.1 GHz using liquid n2 for cooling. Somehow, they hit over 3.8Ghz using a small cooler that was not clamped down.

Also, a 1.8 Duron produces 53w stock. At 3.8G and 4v it would be over 700w. With a thermal resistance of .6 C/W, the cooler's temperature would be over 420 degrees C. That guy who picked it up is really one tough dude.

It didn't explode. The heat causes a gigantic build up in pressure underneath the processor. Since the processor is held down by the motherboard, the pressure increases with the heat. Eventually, the pressure is so great that it blasts the CPU apart and blows a hole in the underside of the motherboard as the change of pressure is so great that neither the MB and CPU has time to adapt to the change. Thus, they fail.
