  • @elatus Put a billion billion years under your belt and see if your emotions can be stirred enough to care about the next available thing to do.

  • @sheepard9915 There is no reason to do anything in an endless life. When life is a precious fleeting moment most find it imperative to make it a great life. A certain type of nihilist fantasizes about endless life and make their mortal life about dreaming of it.

  • @yankinCanada I would love it if humanity discovered real immortality (the never dying kind). I could keep myself amused until the entropic death of the universe.

  • "If it is true, you should believe it, if it isn't, you shouldn't." If he actually lived his life based on this philosophy of his, he would sit in one spot and do nothing. As there is no logical reason to do anything, other than succumb to the illusions of his self, he does not adhere to his own statement. By living his life, he is admitting that the statement he made is not one which he follows.

  • @sheepard9915 Nonsense. His life was not an illusion, it was verifiable, testable, and measurable. Also, there are no logical reasons not to live your life. Wanting something is reason enough to do something. Besides, he wasnt saying you should only do whats logical, he was saying that you should make the effort to believe in things that are actually true.

  • Lol I love that sound he makes when he's thinking: ughhghghhhck

  • Note the interviewer. She is clearly grappling with the responses that Russell is giving in her own mind, and yet she continues to ask questions in a respectful and polite manner. This journalistic discipline is dead, it seems.

  • As you approach the end of life ha

  • And then there's Anthony Flew who 'followed the evidence' and now has passed from Atheism to Theism/Christianity

  • @NewMountofOlives i think you'll find he became a deist not a christian

  • @NewMountofOlives the evidence compels me to prepare for my real life after i'm buried in the ground

  • I wish he was my grandpa.

  • Russell: "Because I see no evidence whatever for any of the Christian dogmas. I've examined all the stock arguments in favour of the existence of God, and none of them seem to me to be logically valid."

Plain and simple. If you understand this and you're still religious, there is no hope for you.

  • Sitting around smoking his pipe, with an air of smug superiority. He is not a wise man, he is an intelligent man.

  • I´ve neve heard about Bertrand before, but after 3 min 26 sec I´m positive that he was a cool dude.

  • The most well composed argument, reflects the principals of my belief exactly.

  • I have a lot less to fear from hell than I do in dying in the current state of end-of-life health care in the US that allows the dying to have prolonged, lingering and painful deaths instead of allowing the option to simply be put to sleep.

  • @MarkRosengarten I agree with you one hundred percent. Doctor Kevorkian was not a bad man. I wonder about Russll's claim that there is nothing that can help you from religion. Voltaire said, "If there is no god, one would need to be invented." The lie of religion has helped people cope with life.

  • @JayGatsbyOdysseus its destoryed a lot more peoples lives over human history, and still today. A man is to be executed in Saudi Arabia for "blashphemy" and he wasnt even trying to insult anyone. He was simply expressing intelligence.

If people want to live a fantasy that lets them think they will live forever, let them, but if they want to kill others for not believing the same drivel, or pass laws that discriminate upon others, then no religion is not a good thing

  • @XXLpeanuts I agree, but even Sam Harris says that religion is not all bad. I had no money at all a while back. I went up to the mission. Christians fed me.

  • @JayGatsbyOdysseus Oh ofcourse there are things like that, but think about it, thats people being good, people can be good without religion as Christopher Hitchens said (something like this) "there will always be good people and bad people, it takes religion to make good people to bad things"

  • @XXLpeanuts I understand. I've read a lot of Christopher Hitchens' articles in Vanity Fair for years. Hitchens was like Russell. He thought religion was just bad, nothing but bad and should be eliminated from society, like Marx. However, Sam Harris sees some good from religion. Like Voltaire wrote, "if there is no God, he would need to be invented." To say that religion is100 percent bad is myopic. The atheists is just as bad as a hater as the believer. Shame on you.

  • @JayGatsbyOdysseus You misunderstand my point, im not saying religion is 100% bad, what im saying is, saying that its done some good therefore its not at all a threat is like saying you support a dictator because hes done some good things like build up the infrastructure (many like hitler and stalin did great things for the advancement of a country) reguardless of the millions they have killed or how ever many the persecute. Just because some good has been done doesnt make the whole thing good

  • @XXLpeanuts OK, I agree with you. However, Russell is not like us. Russell wants complete elimination of religion.

  • @JayGatsbyOdysseus the difference between priests and pimples is that pimples dont come on your face until you are at lease twelve.

  • @calabiyou LOL. Thats f awesome.

  • @calabiyou lol, i'm defiantly going to remember that one.

  • you have surely met your maker by now! what did you say to him you goose?

  • @BOSSGT2 He died. With no energy and no functioning lungs and larynx, I'm sure he said nothing to anyone.

The afterlife is a lot like the beforelife: nothing much to speak about.

  • @BOSSGT2 thats a bit nasty, he was very respectful and honest, he would never say such a thing about anyone else like you just have, and that is his point as well, you are presumably religious and yet not a nice person.

  • outside impositions of no value may include elementary education, etiquette indoctrination and possibly toilet training...they do not count

  • ..outside impositions... of no value ..whatsoever..." does this opinion include elementary education , etiquette indoctrination, or even say, toliet training? hmmm.

  • observation might be an example---spiritual communities have founded peaceful productive states through history that even this person have benefited from, say since certainly his cave dwelling forebears days(in Europe, clearly evident post time of even the Christ)...all over the world in isolated as well associated states. There have been loads of cases of premonitions, prophetcy,on record, period .He dosen't even know how far he has been carried, himself. No idea.

  • “I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it.”

    ― Mark Twain

  • I remember these creationists saying that ''atheism'' is for stupid people.

  • I wish he was my grand father.

  • @TheBlindPowerslave Fuck yes, that would be awesome.

  • @iowntwocats Dude I would have listened to him all day. It would have been much better than the usual boring Korean war stories I hear.

  • Long live the light of truth and enquiry. Thank you Bertrand.

  • well, at the risk of producing one of these pointless internet arguments, you are positing that you can't say something based on the way you've been brought up. and i am saying that you can.

  • @Buddyvision2010 positing is different than proving

  • Im sure hes had fun in hell for 41 years, lol

  • @wrighb10

i cant tell if that was a joke or not?! lol

  • @Buddyvision2010 it was a joke, but im a christian so im also taking a stab at him, lol

  • @wrighb10 no worries bud!

i personally think its an excellent video.

  • @Buddyvision2010 cool, im just nt a atheist so I cant say its excellent, but if I was an atheist it would be cool

  • @wrighb10

    sure you can.

it does take a little courage to think for yourself though.

  • @Buddyvision2010 what?

  • @wrighb10 If you believe in hell, and that he is there, then that is a very disturbing joke.

  • Cool vid, I love the Thunderbirds!

  • Once one accepts the principles of informal logic if is pretty hard to put forth a legitimate argument for a deity. Maybe that should be an aim of the atheist movement; once the principles of informal logic are accepted then we have established the rules of the verbal battleground. Great video, thanks.

  • thanks
