Hey guy"s do you think that Edouard Kawak or Rich gaspari should have win that mr. olympia in 1988? Lee Haney was very great but I think he was an incomplete bodybuilder with small calves and small biceps to compare with the rest of his body... of course his back and pec was probably the best from the show but edouard Kawak has and incredible back and great biceps!! And rich was so shred and symetrical that years!!

yes dorian made improvements in 93...he had to..FLEX Wheeler was coming...but dorian was 265 in 93-94 at his peak..which was only about 15 pounds more than Haney was in 91... yates most certainly improved from 91 but was it enough??? I go by shape and as far as aesthetics go yates could never match haney's bone structure so Haney still wins..It would be nice to see a 93 yates standing next to a 91 Haney but we will never know will we???
@collin355 Wrong!!! Haney knew. As I've said before, the dorian of 91 sent Haney into retirement (after of course defeating him in the muscularity round. Dorian much improved by 93, so really NO CONTEST!

considering i have been training longer than u have been alive I think i do know the differencve between aesthetics and symmetry..and I never said lee had skinny legs. @collin355 when you se haney stood relaxed at the start of the routine, look at his upper body then imagine the kind of legs you would expect to see on a balanced body, then look at his actual legs and see if you don't stifle a laugh!!! he could never get away with it today. Joel stubbs has a much better upper body than haney, and wipes his ass with him when it comes to back, but with his legs he always gonna suffer, and rightly so.

I think Lee looks great here, nice to see a Mr. Olympia with a flat stomach as opposed to the potruding pot belly gang we have today. True Haney could've used another couple of inches on each thigh and if built in correctly would've made his waist even smaller. Arnold could never get his thighs to match his upper body but Arnold was almost 6'2 if I'm not mistaken and huge thighs are rae on a guy 6ft+. I'm 6'4 and my thighs lag behind my upper body despite my best efforts tall man syndrome lol
@Naturalhit , so tell me why coleman's calves reach neraly 24 inches??? It's not a matter of black and white. It's true that haney is lacking calves when he was at his top. Just think of Arnold's calves, they were pretty small at the beginning, but when he decided to grow them no matter what, he finished at the top of his carrier with very good calves, and he is white!!
@toshiamata I doubt coleman has a 24" calves. Genetics play a big part to it when it comes to shape. Even Arnold said in his book that he didn't train calves as hard as before, which explained why they were small back then.
If you look at my avatar I have a 19 1/2" upper arm, but my biceps will always be flat.

Nevertheless at the beginning of his carrier it was a weak point and by now they are huge, so if genetics was relaly the point ow could he reach that level?. I think with hard training you can make progress on every muscle even if you're not bless genetically. However I agree with you that for the shape of the calves genetics plays a big role.
Lee was at his alltime best shape/conditioning in '84. If he had that physique today, (240+lbs), he'd be a top three finisher in any contest he entered.

Perhaps I'm biased, but Haney's physique is superior to Colemans. Todays have a larger appearance, but do have a bloated look to them, almost like they are holding water. Haney wasn't Garspari sharp, but at 250lbs he was sharper than Coleman.
I'm of the opinion that his posing wasn't that great. But what does it matter? I mean, you can kind of sense that he didn't bother to practice because he knew he had the best physique anyways.
This is all subjective, a beauty contest. Frankly, they were the best on stage at their time and the future champions were better. Haney size is nothing compare to the kind of man he is, a good man who trained hard and give everything he had to be the best. If you have any negative thing to say about any of these gentlemen, especially Lee you do not know Mr. Haney and have not trained to be a champion.

1980 MrOlympia was the Biggest Robbery in Bodybuilding in History Arnold looked terrible he shouldn't have placed in the top 5. But if he did continue and if Lou Ferringno had come back after the Incredible Hulk series had finished in 1981 he would've retired Arnold. Because he looked amazing in the Hercules movies in 1982-83 way better than he did in Pumping Iron the movie sucked but Lou was Incredible!

This was Haney's best year. For people who wants to compare Arnold to other bodybuilders, do not do so because there is no known video that actually shows Arnold in his best shape. Videos tht people see are mainly the 80 Mr. O and his earlier years. His best shape only can be seen in pictures only a select few have, including Flex magazine.
I prefer arnold, but lee would lose to ronnie who had mass and balance, all over - lee had chicken legs, just not good enough, amazing he won so many sandows
It was all about Lee Haney the "Image" because like Brittany Spears he has not "real" talent. I always said he had the "Prison Physique" big upper body and no lower body. Once again you have to have the "Total Package."
A lot of guys back then didnt really want to develop legs for aesthetics reason, u know, much like Arnold didnt really wanna bring up his legs size, despite bringing up his calves to the rest of his body. Aesthetically, massive legs in proportion to the rest of the body detract from your overall look. But, today's bbs can handle the situation better.
He did have legs... but just like most bodybuilders from the 60's, 70's and 80's, legs were secondary focus, not primary. His legs could have been better, yes, but so could have soooo many other guys as well.
Poor calves and arms. Big ROn has poor calves also. Haney worked very hard to improve those arms though, he was always criticized for those since the beginning and he worked and worked until those particular critics went into silence. That deserves some credit! There's a saying, "Mr. O is won from the back." lol
AND THE FRONT! Lee's front Lat spread is the Greatest of All time His Chest is the best never mind his shoulders and his abs where great too He could Vacuum pull in his stomach while doing a front biceps pose No one can do that anymore His bi's (like the rest of him) had great shape they were a tad small but that's nit picking Dorian and Cutlers? Physiques since the Haney era have gotten insanely bigger, but neither Dorian nor Ronnie, nor Jay, possessed the total package of size and aesthetics, plus PRESENTATION like Haney! Compare a Haney routine to Jay's this past Olympia . . . Haney puts you in awe . . . Jay puts you to sleep. Does he even know how to pose?!
True, now we have more big boys than ever. And Jay CUtler shouldn't have won the last Mr. O. Nonetheless, Mr. O has always been won by big boys, except for several few. Arnold, Sergio, and Dorian had 58 inch chest. Ronnie had 60 inch. Those 4 all have at least 22 inch. arms. Franco was very muscular. Jay's last routine sucked ass.
I was in high school as the Haney era ended and Dorian's began. Back in the day, a Haney, Gaspari, Christian, or Quinn posing routine was INSPIRING! There was that sense of awe. Another interesting thing to take note: watch Jay's routine this past year and count how many times he has to gesture to the crowd to cheer for him. Old Skool boys didn't need to do that. Watch Haney - the crowd went nuts because his physique spoke volumes all by itself.

@Naturalhit , so tell me why coleman's calves reach neraly 24 inches??? It's not a matter of black and white. It's true that haney is lacking calves when he was at his top. Just think of Arnold's calves, they were pretty small at the beginning, but when he decided to grow them no matter what, he finished at the top of his carrier with very good calves, and he is white!!

@toshiamata I doubt coleman has a 24" calves. Genetics play a big part to it when it comes to shape. Even Arnold said in his book that he didn't train calves as hard as before, which explained why they were small back then.
If you look at my avatar I have a 19 1/2" upper arm, but my biceps will always be flat.

Nevertheless at the beginning of his carrier it was a weak point and by now they are huge, so if genetics was relaly the point ow could he reach that level?. I think with hard training you can make progress on every muscle even if you're not bless genetically. However I agree with you that for the shape of the calves genetics plays a big role.

take a look at the 2009 arnold classic..the top three ALL had huge roid guts with blockey shape..haney weighed just the same as victor martinez who took 2nd but haney was more ripped with better shape..branch warren looked like shit and took 3rd..haney had better shape and weighed just the same as those guys with a better mid section..and I do disagree with 84 as haneys best shape..1991 he was even better would have blown jay cutler and dexter away..smallest waist ever for 250 plus pounds

Look at Lee Labrada...his physique was more complete than Haneys,but did he win...NO!..even Shawn Ray and dorian...did he ever beat him...NO!...

Perhaps I'm biased, but Haney's physique is superior to Colemans. Todays have a larger appearance, but do have a bloated look to them, almost like they are holding water. Haney wasn't Garspari sharp, but at 250lbs he was sharper than Coleman.

This is all subjective, a beauty contest. Frankly, they were the best on stage at their time and the future champions were better. Haney size is nothing compare to the kind of man he is, a good man who trained hard and give everything he had to be the best. If you have any negative thing to say about any of these gentlemen, especially Lee you do not know Mr. Haney and have not trained to be a champion.

1980 MrOlympia was the Biggest Robbery in Bodybuilding in History Arnold looked terrible he shouldn't have placed in the top 5. But if he did continue and if Lou Ferringno had come back after the Incredible Hulk series had finished in 1981 he would've retired Arnold. Because he looked amazing in the Hercules movies in 1982-83 way better than he did in Pumping Iron the movie sucked but Lou was Incredible!

This was Haney's best year. For people who wants to compare Arnold to other bodybuilders, do not do so because there is no known video that actually shows Arnold in his best shape. Videos tht people see are mainly the 80 Mr. O and his earlier years. His best shape only can be seen in pictures only a select few have, including Flex magazine.

A lot of guys back then didnt really want to develop legs for aesthetics reason, u know, much like Arnold didnt really wanna bring up his legs size, despite bringing up his calves to the rest of his body. Aesthetically, massive legs in proportion to the rest of the body detract from your overall look. But, today's bbs can handle the situation better.

The reason was that he simply overpowered others on stage. Arnold had far more symmetry issues than Haney - Franco too. Haney deserved his wins.

Compare a Haney routine to Jay's this past Olympia . . . Haney puts you in awe . . . Jay puts you to sleep. Does he even know how to pose?!

True, now we have more big boys than ever. And Jay CUtler shouldn't have won the last Mr. O. Nonetheless, Mr. O has always been won by big boys, except for several few. Arnold, Sergio, and Dorian had 58 inch chest. Ronnie had 60 inch. Those 4 all have at least 22 inch. arms. Franco was very muscular. Jay's last routine sucked ass.

I was in high school as the Haney era ended and Dorian's began. Back in the day, a Haney, Gaspari, Christian, or Quinn posing routine was INSPIRING! There was that sense of awe. Another interesting thing to take note: watch Jay's routine this past year and count how many times he has to gesture to the crowd to cheer for him. Old Skool boys didn't need to do that. Watch Haney - the crowd went nuts because his physique spoke volumes all by itself.

Total package? Haney was good,but what about his arms and calves?His thighs weren't quite big enough either...def not a total package.
