If you do your own research along with meeting with a recruiter you won't be too surprised. People who believe everything recruiters say are naive and deserve the surprise.
My recruiter didn't so much lie as he did hide the truth. Fortunately for myself, I did some research on my own, so there are no misconceptions when I go into the Army.
If you lie; or you lie because your Supervisor makes you then your not following the rules. I had friends that were recruiters that did not lie. If you have never been in the military then you don't know anyway; most troops that cry about it got what they were looking for in the 1st place or did so porly on the placement exam they had little option in the first place. You take the test, if theres something open then you take it. You don't do crappy and expect to be a special forces soldier.
thtas why you get everything on paper, and when you sign up with marines u dont choose ur job you choose the field so can can get anything in the field of your 3 choices
i didn't get in to defend USA, but it bought more time to figure out what i wanted out of life, while serving spoiled Navy officers who told me "get me this get me that." time passed. i missed sunshine, civilian life, & being on solid ground. i didn't want to submerge 600 feet undersea for 16 more years. when my fellow sailors found out that my obligations was met & i wanted out, they told me, sarcastically, "he's no longer a team player." so much for comradery.
It's all about the money. No honor. Do anything for a paycheck. Oath to the constitution? "What the hell is the constitution?" Do what you're told and you get your paycheck. "I was only following orders when I murdered those innocent civilians..."
Recruiter that I met.. tells me shit straight. First day I met him he said he is selling me to the Military and a few days later we were talking about USMC and he tells me about how you WILL do crazy shit and never forget it. Best recruiter I've met but an asshole at the same time cause he is racist as shit and a total dumb ass as well.
Here's how it is. A recruiter is a car salesman. He's selling you a car. You would always read the contract for a car, right? You wouldn't sign on it unless you knew about. So why act like recruiters are bad? They get paid to get more people to join. It's your part to read and make sure before you sign, not the recruiter.
I remember living in a college town around the time of the U.S. invasion of Iraq; the army recruiters set up shop on the strip with all the bars---at night on the weekends, they'd hang out in front and prey on drunk guys walking past.
Soldiers don't protect our freedoms. Where were the soldiers in May, when Indiana gutted the 4th Amendment? I didn't see any soldiers stopping that, as they're sworn to! No, they were halfway across the globe, pillaging & raping Iraq = 1 Million+ dead Iraqis.

My Army recruiters are wayyy above quota lol. Apparently, there is a surplus of new recruits. Hard to even get the MOS you want nowadays. Hell, at one point, they were even rejecting people who wanted infantry.

Why does the media and the majority of folks pile all recruiters in the same pile. My recruiter (Air Force) told me the honest truth. I now recruit and are told if we are caught misleading applicants our careers are over. I ensure applicants understand the level of commitment and danger that comes with wearing the uniform. Serving in the military isn't for everyone. I let them know that along with the facts about what we're about. If they don't like it there's the door. Integrity First
im in the army reserve and i did the oath and everything But i decided that i would wanna jus stay home n study in collegee....i asked my recruiter if i can leave but i would be black listed...because im not in DEP....is that true? (btw i havent gone to bootcamp or ait yet)
@jskillz909 Your recruiter is full of Sh*t. You can request a discharge prior to shipping out and it won't affect you at all. If you wanted to join another branch or component it won't affect you. Not all recruiters are the same. I'm Air Force Reserve but I make sure all the folks who enlist understand the level of commitment involved. This is either for you or not. There's no such thing as being black listed, if you don't ship out or join. Good luck
i wanted to join the army but a cracked collar bone was keeping me out without medical documents to clarify my past ailment...my recuiter asked me if i was set on the army, i told him its my only option. he said " so you never cracked your collar bone did you?" made my day and now im off to MEPS
anyone notice they reffered(sp?) to the Marine as a recruiter, yet he said he would lie to get people to join so he could get bonus points to pick up sgt? to go to Recruiter school you at least have to be a sr. Cpl on the verge of picking up, which means 99% of recruiters are Sgt's and above and no cutting score is needed. Recruiters don't get points. it's their job to recruit- just in case anyone didn't know.

Im a USMC recruiter and we DO NOT! get promotion points for contracts WTF is he talking about maybe he was on RA as a CPL then yes he gets points for his refferals that actually enlist but after they sit down and talk with a professionally trained Marine Recruiter and say YES I WANT TO BE A MARINE..

The United States of America has but one flag. That is the National Flag. This one flag is authorized to be flown by citizens as well as the Government. Each branch of Military has its own flag but they only represent that branch. The only "war" flag the United States has is the former war flag of the US Cavalry, but as a whole, the US only has the one National flag, OLD GLORY.
@chadeoux Thats not strictly true ... there is a war flag of sorts, if you add a gold fringe or top the flag with a gold eagle for use as a flag by the "General of the Army" but I suspect its a very old regulation.

What makes recruiters any different than salesmen? In the end, it's up to the person to make that decision. You can't blame the military for "bending the truth". You know a way of getting around it? Say "I'm not interested" and walk away. It's not like they are some mind gurus forcing us to join agaisnt our will. People need to man-up and be thankful there isn't a draft.
It's the responsibility of the civilian to educate themselves. They take the word from some random guy off the street and get pissy when they find out it's not true. Most people who enlist don't even read their contracts they just sign away. I don't blame the recruiters, i blame the individual enlisting.

@poolie626 there were local news reports and you can look up a few on youtube or google about the military taking in more felons. It is possible the News misrepresented the information, but I do remember at one point seeing a report in which recruiters were going to prisons seeing inmates who were to be released within such a period of time. Most of this I tend to think could be easily found on the internet.

That former Marine was not a recruiter. If he is trying to get points for Sgt before he gets out of the Marines, he was most likely a dirt bag and no way he was in long enough to be a recruiter. Most recruiters are Sgt's and SSgt's on at the minimum their 2nd enlistment.

On the flip side of the coin, you notice how they go straight to the commander, an officer, who's job it is to tell the media what they want to hear? If the reporters want the honest opinions of how the careers of enlisted men are affected negatively for not recruiting enough people, the reports should go straight to those guys off duty - not to their boss. Then again, civilians are ignorant about the rank structure - military guys in uniform are all the same to them.
The guy was a Cpl on recruiting duty, which is uncommon - you gotta keep your nose clean and have good ratings. Most likely, he was the lowest ranking guy at his recruiting station, maybe some higher ranking ones made him go on bitch duty everywhere, he hated it, and failed in his recruiting mission and got relieved for good of the Corps. Now he has an axe to grind.

If you compare the statistics of deaths in those countries as a unit to several cities in the U.S., you got a higher chance of dying in the states, despite the fact that you're in a more dangerous environment overseas. This is such a bs video, I am a marine recruiter. The army is defenitally different than the marine corps and i don't get points towards promotion. As a Sgt we dont get promoted off of points, so the media kinda screwed the pouch on that one. @zaleisimmortal Actually you can volunteer to go as a senior Cpl as long as you are financially stable and very clean, no NJPs and such. The command has to approve it of course. Though points are awarded after graduating recruiting school not in the 'streets'. The points this idiot might be talking about are the points recruiters get for perfomance while on 'the bag'. These are insentives to perform as a recruiter.

@pleasingteasing i still have respect for our troops, but no, they are not dieing for our freedom. we're born with freedom yet somehow our government expects us to die for that natural right. if a serious war were to break out, then yes we would need every one of the good men in our military desperately, but until then, they shouldn't have to die for nothing. there are better things we can do as humans than kill each other. i was all set on joining, but now i'm not so sure

The military exists to protect us from enemies out side and inside our country a enemy army. Its not a question of if but rather when. I don't intend any disrespect to our armed forces. Just saying.
Recruiters up here in Canada are brutally honest when it comes to joining, they want to weed out the ones they don't need. The day I was sworn in and had to fill out some more paper work the guy said "Okay, list any scars or marks you might have so that if you get blown up in Afghanistan we can probably identify you." I like this honest approach because I don't want to go through my BMQ and future courses and tours with some patriotic ridden pussies.
I dont care if you agree with the war or not, but with out the military do you think the USA would be half as safe as it is now? Those who condem the military expect the entire world to be peace loving hippies too. If the military was to lay down their arms do you think the Taliban will do the same?

Here's a good way to know if the military is right for you. Watch the first 30 minutes of Saving Private Ryan. If what you see appeals to you, then join the Army or Marines. I mean seriously, what do people think they are getting into? Getting free college requires a little bit of pain and sacrifice.
People die in war why is it so surprising that when you enlist you might die. If you dont want to die enlist in a job that wont put you in front of gunfire.
More soldiers die in car wrecks in the US per year than in combat. No shit. So the recruiters example of falling of the bed is a little dumb, but the principle is true. Not saying that some jobs within the military dont have a higher mortality rate than others, but on average a US soldier is more likely to die in the US in a vehicle than in Iraq or Afghanistan.

If you lie; or you lie because your Supervisor makes you then your not following the rules. I had friends that were recruiters that did not lie. If you have never been in the military then you don't know anyway; most troops that cry about it got what they were looking for in the 1st place or did so porly on the placement exam they had little option in the first place. You take the test, if theres something open then you take it. You don't do crappy and expect to be a special forces soldier.

I now recruit and are told if we are caught misleading applicants our careers are over. I ensure applicants understand the level of commitment and danger that comes with wearing the uniform. Not all recruiters are the same. I'm Air Force Reserve but I make sure all the folks who enlist understand the level of commitment involved. This is either for you or not. anyone notice they reffered(sp?) to the Marine as a recruiter, yet he said he would lie to get people to join so he could get bonus points to pick up sgt? to go to Recruiter school you at least have to be a sr. Cpl on the verge of picking up, which means 99% of recruiters are Sgt's and above and no cutting score is needed. Recruiters don't get points. it's their job to recruit- just in case anyone didn't know.

The United States of America has but one flag. That is the National Flag. This one flag is authorized to be flown by citizens as well as the Government. Each branch of Military has its own flag but they only represent that branch. The only "war" flag the United States has is the former war flag of the US Cavalry, but as a whole, the US only has the one National flag, OLD GLORY.

@chadeoux Thats not strictly true ... there is a war flag of sorts, if you add a gold fringe or top the flag with a gold eagle for use as a flag by the "General of the Army" but I suspect its a very old regulation.
Much as believing otherwise might be attractive to someone of my political persuasion, it would seem that the idea the "Old Glory" is a war-flag being flown as a civil flag is a myth. Most commonly the 1799 Revenue Ensign of the custom service is claimed to be the civil flag.

You can't even enlist without having paid your speeding tickets now a days. The quality of potential enlistees have increased from decades ago. It is possible the News misrepresented the information, but I do remember at one point seeing a report in which recruiters were going to prisons seeing inmates who were to be released within such a period of time. Most of this I tend to think could be easily found on the internet.

The guy was a Cpl on recruiting duty, which is uncommon - you gotta keep your nose clean and have good ratings. Most likely, he was the lowest ranking guy at his recruiting station, maybe some higher ranking ones made him go on bitch duty everywhere, he hated it, and failed in his recruiting mission and got relieved for good of the Corps. As a Sgt we dont get promoted off of points, so the media kinda screwed the pouch on that one. Recruiters up here in Canada are brutally honest when it comes to joining, they want to weed out the ones they don't need. The day I was sworn in and had to fill out some more paper work the guy said "Okay, list any scars or marks you might have so that if you get blown up in Afghanistan we can probably identify you." More soldiers die in car wrecks in the US per year than in combat. No shit. So the recruiters example of falling of the bed is a little dumb, but the principle is true. Not saying that some jobs within the military dont have a higher mortality rate than others, but on average a US soldier is more likely to die in the US in a vehicle than in Iraq or Afghanistan.
