price, scalability..... it is very obvious that you are mac fan boy you have no idea about servers, whit the price you spend on a xserver you could at least buy twice or more servers white the same performance or even better.
Can someone explain what a graphics storage server is? Isn't that kind of .. I don't know, wrong? A server stores all kinds of data, including graphics. Or do they have different servers for different data?
first, i think he knows what he is saying...(it's his work and he studied that) so why must you say he's a retard. By insulting someone, it doesn't mean you're right but it can mean you're an asshole.
After, for the price, it may not look so but a mac needs less cpu power to run the same process than windows... For warranty and programs that you are running on it, you only have to reffer to one company : APPLE. It's more stable to use mac than windows so it might be a reason why he chose it.
I'm a CCIE, use macs and xserves, Linux and (regrettably) Windaz.
I have many more problems getting Windows systems to behave (due to them breaking many of the IEEE standards out there) but with Xserve and Linux I have no issues.

My little dog house have more computing power and space more than 15 terabyte of storage. This place is a freaken loserville. This goes for the people who work there! Can't afford the real machine so a Mac will do.
A lot of "tech analysts" really have no idea about what's out there in the industry and when something like this is done, they ignore the specs and feedback.. they use their own (usually inaccurate) opinions. Writers need to follow the numbers or the testimonials. People should learn from this and VT's System X, instead of relying on preconceived notions. Kudos to this IT guy for seeing through the negative FUD and hype.. and instead buying equipment based on performance, price, and scalability.
Another example of why CNBC is ahead of the competition. Fox Business news stores their video in Cheney's closet on non-fireproof Jaz drive cartridges
I like Mac's, but he is wrong. EMC Celerra, CLARiiON and even the HP EVA series both out perform and have greater capacity than XServe. I do though like what Apple is doing, they are finally getting some desktop market share.
They may outperform the Xserve, but that OS that's on their racks is genuine OS X kitten purring along. Any serious server room has some kind of UNIX based OS running on their servers. Hell, Microsoft doesn't even use their own server OS to run their site.
That use to be true but after 2000 server rolled out that changed. They have run IIS now for some years, both IIS and Apache have taken their share of exploits. I've managed several significant server rooms between 100 to 400 servers that were 100% Windows and more heterogeneous Linux/Windows servers. I've been in many CoLo data centers, you see mostly HP, Dell, and IBM for servers, and a few X-Serves. I hope to see Apple get more market share, they are kind of cool.
They are. Their estimated market share is about 16%. And not only that, but they are officially the #1 selling company for laptops for education. Dell used to be #1 but Apple has taken that place now. thecreativeone even said that almost everywhere he walks around campus, someone's got a white MacBook or a MacBook Pro. Even the U.S. Arny is using Xserves now. Their server room staff shrank down to about 3 people after getting the Xserves.
I'm happy to see Mac's finally getting a piece of the pie back, Jobs has learned from his mistakes. I meant no offense; I've been in IT too long to care what goes into a server room so long as it works. When apple expands their server line offering 2U, 3U, and 4U servers they will get taken more seriously for rack solutions. True SANS use specialized controllers with an OS whose sole purpose is to serve the drives to servers. Servers merely connect to the allocated drive space.
1st I love Mac's, I managed 80 at my last job. I'm saying xServe hardware running OS-X with xSAN installed on top isn't a true SAN when compared against dedicated SANs. A true SAN runs on special controllers with an OS dedicated solely to manage the hard drives. The people at Apple know this, when Apple releases a true SAN OS-X and xSAN will become a single OS on specialized controllers. It is awesome to see Apple throw its hat in the ring, I can't wait to see what they come up with.
1) its a discontinued product for a reason
2) only the OS is cheaper because of unlimited clients
3) not scalable at all

Why bother which this when you can get cheaper hardware from anyone else and run Redhat?

All sounded like bullshit then he lets slip "I'm a mac guy" really nothing more needed to be said.

Maybe OS X Server is good enough for hosting Data but in Aspect like User Management or Group Policys it is no rival for Windows.

I don't think so. The Apple PowerMac G5 super computer was way more powerful than PC supercomputers that were more than twice the price.

Great set of Xserve servers and RAID systems. I am surprised the audio is as good as it is given how close the mic is.

Not to be rude but are you saying the CNBC isnt a true server setup? Apple has a specalized os for serving called OSX server. its 500 bucks i think.

"so long as it works" truer words have never been spoken. It also happens that UNIX/Linux "just works". Set it and forget it if you know what I mean.
Thing with young guys like me is that we argue over anecdotal "proof" rather than focusing on the real part quoted above ;).
