PURE GENIUS! This woman is a precious jewel in the music world! I've never known someone to tap into the human condition with emotion as she does. NEVER! She knows just the right thing to say, sing, play and how to execute them all with perfection!
Like so many great works of poetry or lyrics, they are steeped in ambiguity with lots of room to let the imagination connect the dots. What beautiful mystery in this song.
I have had the privalage of seeing miss Colvin a few times, the first being her first in Montana. Have always been blown away by her presence in the moment while performing....this song examplifies her talents......
I suppose my post as as absurdly not without effort as what it must be like to create a piece like this. I find the facial expressions in the video FAR outweighing of the words - perhaps even music.
I guess I'm trying to say I think this piece is a very private endeavor - somehow leaked to the public !
not the video, the entire meditation.
I see some sincere expressions here - that really - go without words or music !
Gee, what can you say but thanks for sharing a side of humanity ! :)
And you've been waiting for a while... I can tell.
no causality... even so -
This person pulls off a delicate balance between loss and hope barracaded up in hope in this piece. I am 39, and 'get' the state of human affairs, they are not often pretty - FINALLY- I understand what the artist is about in this piece.
nothing to do with the artist even - raw human beingness here - unsung, unsaid - could have been better left - but hey - why not reach from the abyss and deliver this.
I would include this video on the next NASA Voyager mission.
I think it reflects bare - universal human emotion - few words can describe the reality behind this piece to me. The song was a best attempt - the real song isn't even sung I think.
Shawn makes playing a song like this look easy but I heard she just worked on her playing early on so that is no surprise. Her voice is great and her Martin sounds like a bell. Love it!
Early on in life. She was a great fan of Joni Mitchell with the different tunings etc. and practiced and that can be noticed in her guitar playing now for sure. I love this tune also which I forgot to mention.
I picked up a guitar about a year and a half ago because I was inspired by Lisa Loeb. I loved it but I often got a discouraging feeling when I'd see her play because I wasn't and still AM not that good at it.
It never accured to me that maybe it's because she's since she was a little girl!
Duh!
I won't stop practicing until I can play like Lisa and Shawn.
That's a life-long commitment, I know, but look how beautiful the music is.
I play guitar also and it does take a lot of practice with some songs and some of the songs Shawn plays as well as Lisa Loeb are in open tunings so they can take a "lot" of practice. It is discouraging but if you keep with it sometimes the chords you think you'll never be able to play come to you. I'm still practicing "These Four Walls" by Shawn and haven't done it yet.
I came across this watching a MASH tribute. What a beautiful and pure voice. Makes me want to hear LOTS more.

This song reminds me of the art of song writing.
And more ! ! !
Paradoxical too - clearly this is an inward experience- only captured temporary.
I am content NOT to know the authorial intent behind the piece.
Thanks Ms/Mrs. Colvin.

Kemp, we're showing the symptoms of Type II Convinitis, or so they call it.
Did you know I met her in June?
She's more amazing than I could ever describe.

Wow, that's cool you met her. Where did you meet her? At a concert? Must have been great. I think we are big fans right? Cool!!

I just discovered 'Fat City' and 'These Four Walls'. I have become infatuated instantly by her vocal inflections and phrasing. Formidable talent.

That, my friend, is what we call Type 2Colvinitis ;)
I caught it about 2 yrs. back and it's taken over my soul! There's no cure.
I'd prefer to have it for the rest of my life.
Isn't she amazing?

This work is not anchored to any person.
Be happy to be born to witness someone else gaining opportunity to share a view
and I do hope they are everything like you !

Early on in life? or 5 mins. before the taping?
Either way, she did an amazing job.

Wow, thank you so much Kemp!
I see you've surpassed my level of guitar-playing if you can at least attempt These Four Walls!
Good luck with it!
