I find it interesting that there was no comparison to other swashbuckling rpgs, like 7th Sea.
I would be interested to know what S7S brings to the table that these games do not. I can already do swashbuckling at my table - in fact, its my preffered genre. Does S7S do anything for me that say 7th Sea or Savage Worlds cannot accomplish?
Interesting review, Kurt, as usual! Two questions, though: Firstly, is this just a setting book or is the engine included? Secondly, the setting sounds like Sundered Skies - how does it compare? Uh... thirdly, how does the engine compare to other swashbuckling games, like Pirates of the Spanish Main?
Pirates in skyships--great concept. Helpful review; it's a good rules-light system, and very adaptable--Pirates of Dark Water shouldn't require any rules changes.
Even character generation is fun! The rulebook is a good read, even if you're not playing. The artwork isn't just decorative, it's really illustrative.
I love the concept of floating island cities. its one of the reasons i picked up all the sundered skies stuff. this is obviously different, but still appeals to me. i wonder what it is abut floating worlds that turns my crank?
@Caladors Maybe Evil Hat has a policy not to release Retail pdfs until Hard Copy Sales reach a certain level first?
This Game was lots of fun to play test, as quirky and buggy as the version was when our group tried it. It had a similar vibe to 7th Sea, but I got into this a lot more - partly because of the rules light system and the emphasis on pulp/swash-buckling style action. Thanks for reviewing this Kurt!
Now, how about reviewing Cthulhutech, Hellas or Reign? ;)
:) One of the better animated series. Shame about it finishing but I loved how much work they put into the world. I'm pretty sure you could adapt just about any swashbuckling system to the Dark Water universe without too much work. Watching old shows from that series gets me in the mood for all kinds of high adventure stuff :)
It's an excellent game. I'm really into the Swashbuckling genre and this is my favorite of all those I've tried. And if you know the FATE system, the PDQ is very easy to learn.
Just started a campaign of this. It puts other Swashbuckling games to shame.

@TheConfessor Mechanics that actually support the genre. Fewer rolls, more narrative control, and magic that works.

BTW, Kurt -- it's spelled "underkoffler" but is pronounced "throatwobbler mangrove".
;)

@spiffnolee You're just saying that because you're a prominent NPC in the book. ;)

Sounds fun. My favorite games include lots of swashbuckling. Do you remember the game Flashing Blades? Loved it!

PDQ is an awesome system! Don't feel bad Kurt, my group won't give it a try either. They're very set in their ways.
