Ummm.... if that message was delivered in 1990, and all the necessary science was available at that time -- then I would say that the real mystery and true problem lies with human psychological denial and our refusal to change.
The reason none of the things Carl said needed to gone happened is because of profit. It wouldn't be very profitable to switch to Clean energy because Fossil fuels are much more scarce...meaning Oil and gasoline are a lot more expensive and are just going to get more expensive thus the company and the economy flourish. That is actually a bad thing for the survival of Earth's species.

Has Al Gore explained how his Perito Moreno glacier is growing not shrinking?
@DaveGibbagglers yes actually. as the planet temperatures increase, around the poles there is increased precipitation (snowfall) and this increases the relative size of glaciers in the winter.
@DaveGibbagglers There are some glaciers that are increasing in size but by-and-far the vast majority of glaciers are rapidly decreasing in size and mass. Google: Pelto glacier retreat. You can find all the published research on the state of glaciers around the world.
@robhoneycutt Thanks for acknowledging that their are many glaciers growing around the globe, because many of the global warming talibanists have denied that inconvenient truth like so many other truths that upset their global warming cult dogma. That is one less fear and doom put forth by the global warming taliban. Its awesome news growing glaciers!
@DaveGibbagglers If you read any of the science you know that there are some glaciers that are growing. But they are very few compared with those that are rapidly retreating. You also have to look at the specific circumstances of each of the glaciers. There are several papers on total mass balance of glaciers globally. They all show that total glacier mass is rapidly declining.
@DaveGibbagglers What I get from your comment is that you don't understand the point. A few growing glaciers is not a sign that things are okay. The few glaciers that are growing are doing so because of increased snow accumulation. That accumulation is a function of there being 4% more moisture in the air today than 30 years ago. Warmer winters and more moisture resulting in heavier snowfalls has long been a signal of climate change.
@robhoneycutt What I get from your comment is that you are back up the chest avatared global warming talibanist, that growing and receding glaciers have nothing to do with global warming, but with precipitation rates. More prcipitation more glaciers, less precipitation, receding glaciers llike they have been doing. Thanks for that honey.
@robhoneycutt Ty for admitting that like the chest avatared globaling warming talibanist also admitted growing and receding glaciers have to do with precipitation rates not with global warming. They are just doing what they have been doing for countless ages, growing and receding
@robhoneycutt Ty for admitting that like the chest avatared globaling warming talibanist also admitted growing and receding glaciers have to do with precipitation rates not with global warming. They are just doing what they have been doing for countless ages, growing and receding
@DaveGibbagglers Greenland is a good example to look at. There is more accumulation at the ice sheet summit but also increased ablation at the face of all the glaciers. There is still a total measured LOSS of ice on Greenland even though there is accumulation at the summit. Same plays out with other glaciers but if the ablation rate of a specific glacier is low then that glacier will see more accumulation than melt. But again, these are very rare relative to the total number of glaciers.
@robhoneycutt One of the Global Warming talibanists said the growing and receding glaciers has to do with precipitation rates, not with global warming which means this talibanist spoke the truth for a change. Growing and receding glaciers have nothing to do with global warming, they are doing what they have been doing for countless ages
@DaveGibbagglers Yes, glaciers advance and recede and have done so for eons. No one contradicts that. But each time there is an advance or retreat there is a mechanism for the change. That chance today is the increased concentrations of atmospheric CO2 produced through the burning of fossil fuels.
"Scientists who want to attract attention to themselves, who want to attract great funding to themselves, have to (find a) way to scare the public . . . and this you can achieve only by making things bigger and more dangerous than they really are."

@detoth67 And 2012 will the hottest since we started taking records after the little ice age. Salaam As-Salam! Conservatives are stupid asses!
Global Warming is now the universal answer. Got hot or cold weather? It's Global Warming! Got malaria? It's global warming! Need money for your failing third world dictatorship? It's global warming? Got bed bugs? GW! Lost your homework? It's Global Warming!
@DaveGibbagglers Hey kid! When 97% of climate scientists say man made global warming is FACT. Then its time to set aside your mindless partisanism and join the rest of us in reality.
@detoth67 And when IPCC scientist says global cooling for the next 30 years, and we have growing glaciers around the globe, god damn that global warming, Opps. LOL
No matter if the science is all phony, there are collateral environmental benefits.... Climate change [provides] the greatest chance to bring about justice and equality in the world."
Christine Stewart, former Minister of the Environment of Canada quote from the Calgary Herald, 1999
@DaveGibbagglers Cooling was a function of particulates and fluorocarbons in the atmosphere reflecting sunlight back into space. Govt interaction mitigated it.
Furthermore, the hole in the ozone still exists in Antarctica and its effects are lessening warming. Yes, we've seriously f'd up the plane
Yes, without a doubt. If you are a conservative, you are a stupid ass! You've proven this. Buh-bye! LMFAO!
Venus?! Carl, give me a break! It's 96.5% Carbon dioxide. Eath is 0.038% carbon dioxide. We could burn EVERYTHING on Earth and still not raise it above 20-30%.
However, before you all start ranting, I totally agree that we should get cars that do 70mpg+ That's totally doable.
Raise standard of living; goes without saying. Of course, if the US would stop spending trillions on "defence" (i.e. attack) they could fund it all in 1 year. Ever thing about that?
If you don't believe in global warming you have to not believe it on Venus. If you survive for five minutes in the atmosphere I'll believe everything you say.
@js111410 Youre an idiot.Read any science book, and you'll see that the Greenhouse effect is a scientific fact.People like you are part of the problem.
All Sagan is saying is... look... this might lead to some problems... but at the same time, we need to go to the stars in rocket ships... to explore the universe.
People take his warning to mean that we need to dial back civilization, and and all become farmers again, just so we can feed ourselves, and do little else...
We can't get to the stars that way.
We have to produce and develop, minding our steps as we do, but we must progress and leave Earth some day, not kill our way of life.
@RyderSpearmann Oh FMITA please. Not many people claim that we need to revert to an agrarian lifestyle. We have the TECHNOLOGY to deal with Global Warming, we just don't have the political or popular will.
Hi Scott. I don't think you understand the issue at all. You talk about using technology to deal with GW... but if you will look around, that's not what is being used. It's all about keeping developing nations down, and raising prices, artificially, on coal and oil, to reduce demand and get people to use less.
CLEAN technology was offered decades ago in the form of nuclear power. We could've all been driving electric cars by now.
Thx for posting this! With all the anti-science denier nonsense out there, it's great to see a scientist of Dr. Sagan's status taking this seriously 20 years ago. It's past time that we took collective action to address this issue - time is running out, and Venus is looking more and more likely if we continue with business as usual.
As it happens, fossil fuels might not be the worst GHG we're responsible for. Other practices like animal agriculture not only release methane and nitrous oxides but it also uses fossil fuels.
@SaganAppreciationSoc As it happens, global warming might not be a serious problem at all.
Why do global warming alarmists talk about "flooding"... when it is nothing of the sort. A flood happens in the space of hours.
What GW REALLY says is that our coastlines transform... nothing more. Sure, over hundreds of years, our towns and cities may change with the landscape, but that process is glacially slow. Let's celebrate the expansion of the ocean environment! A different perspective.

"GW" is shorthand for *anthropomorphic* global warming... which does not exist on Venus.
Everyone *believes in* GW... it is what is keeping us alive.
