Of course no one can match the Original Cars and Ben Orr,Ric Ocasek but I think the New Cars are going to be awesome. Todd is awesome and a very good choice to lead the new cars..............
the new cars are awesome and to have such a well talented musician as Todd is an honor to the continuing of the band. If he and Ric Ocasek were together then it really would be awesome.
The New Cars might've worked better if Todd didn't sing every song in super-slow motion. I feel like he dragged out every. single. line. of every song...it's like pick up the pace already! Todd is an amazing musician but I prefer his voice in songs like "Can We Still Be Friends" over stuff like this. I also just hated the name "The New Cars". I felt like that made it harder to disassociate the old from the new. I know it's just a name, but still...all in all, close but no cigar.
The first Cars album was sheer brilliance, and the group never matched it after that. Todd Rundgren is one of the most skilled musicians of his time. Thanks for posting this great video.
I was never a big fan of the Cars (but have always been of Todds.) I did however always love this original song & feel the new band did a decent job on it (although the New Cars with Todd always left me a bit cold.)
Nice thing about that whole NEW CARS thing was that Greg Hawkes teamed up with Todd & has been backing him up on keyboards while he's been out doing his own stuff. No Roger Powell, but he still fits in quite nicely IMHO!
One more thing, actually a couple. First i just wana apologise to all of you for all my longgg comments here LoL i'm a writer so i sometimes get carried away! As for what you said CaraPhyllis, i agree totally. I just kinda look at it by the way Orr died and since he had such a signature sound with The Cars i just think there would be better justice given for them to improve the vocals a bit. New bands remake Beatles, The Police, etc.. and they ruin the originals. Todd is old school, i like that!
Im sure his intentions are pure, plus the New Cars original music is as good as anything i've heard from 'any' band since the 80s. Their talent n resumes speak for themselves. And i believe theyre collectively doing this for the joy, and not to imitate the original Cars music. I like the guys bigtime but still wish they could do Cars songs like Moving In Stereo will better singing n more seriousness, example without that wicked laugh at the end. Because of the way he passed, Orr deserves better.
Btw, did Todd really say that??? If so, it is tacky; otherwise it's just hear-say. However, although Todd is very cool and a great Rock & Roller, i agree it's an insult to how good it would sound with the right singer. This stuff is kicking hot, and Todd is smashing, but it desperately needs an Orr-style singing performance to equal its true greatness. Ben Orr has a quiet mystique and talent, so natural and perfect, totally cool. You need the voice and the calm, the glue. They need Benjamin Orr!
EJ - If you listen to The New Cars' CD, It's Alive, you'll get a better idea of how Rundgren's voice fits in. Nobody could replace Orr (or Ocasek) and Todd doesn't try to imitate them. He'd just sound stupid. Instead he finds an effective middle ground that respects the original. The band kicks ass, especially Easton. If you haven't heard the CD, I recommend it - it might improve your opinion of The New Cars. It's not The Cars, it's something else, and it's very good, IMO.
This reminds me of the Oak Raiders picking JMRussell with the 1st pick in the draft. The Cars should choose a singer who will sing their songs for the love of it and sentimental value, not for the money. Todd is talented and probably a good guy, but he is absolutely not a good fit here. Again, it's like a football team hiring a Coach or acquiring a QB who just doesnt fit the squad and their team style of play. Orr is almost impossible to replace but i do know of one person who comes the closest.
LOL knitting and smoking pot. Who says pot heads are unproductive? I remember seeing photos of Todd on a tractor back in Creem Magazine (THE rock mag of all times) when he was married to Bebe Buell (I think that was her name) and they seemed so happy. He had multi-colored hair before anyone else I ever saw did (like 1975, I believe). That said, this is BLASPHEMY! No, Todd, No!!!
is it me or did he change around the lyrics at the beginning? maybe someone else commented but i am to lazy to look.I will stick to the originals but nice try.actually he moves around more then the original band in concert
the video is in a reverse image- prairie prince is not a left handed drummer and neither is kasim a lefty bassist-
I like Todd, but he didn't sing this as well as Ben. Ben had that Elvis kind of baritone that naturally had a nice whine/strain in the tenor range- I think Todd's voice is already naturally a bit higher- listen to his solo stuff where he sounds like a woman
Sorry...can't let the "sounds like a woman" comment go. He dares to do falsetto where some rockers may be too insecure in their masculinity to even try. It's his motown influences sneaking in when he goes high up the vocal scale sometimes...
The thing is...TR has the ABILITY to hit those notes - so, why not show off his range a bit (jakeandkatie)? Ben had a different range. Both of them have beautiful voices...just different ;-)...that's all. It would be nice to appreciate both of them for the tlents they posses.
Cover band? They have two original members. Ben would probably be there if he wasn't DEAD. And Ric doesn't want to do it. So should Elliot and Greg NOT play their songs anymore because one guy doesn't want to? And what's with all the Todd hating? he's a damn good choice to replace Ric -- who else would do a better job?
The music sounds great, but I can't help but feel that Todd singing this song is disrespectful towards Ben Orr. Especially since Todd made some comment about using the opportunity with the New Cars as "a way to pay the bills." That's so tacky.
The fans want to hear the music agian. It's not the fans fault that Rick is an old fuddy duddy and doesn't want to tour. Todd respects the band and the songs. This isn't some spinal tapp type of parody by the cars!
Awful overmodulatiion. Unlistenable.

This sounds much heavier than the Cars version. Todd Rundgren should seriously consider filling in for Ben Orr

So not sure about this. Now that the real Cars are back (minus Ben of course), I wonder if Todd will be out of a day job.

Todd, the perfect foil for the New Cars,as rightly recommended. Playing lefty? Still Great lead man,and with production with Grand Funk.
All the best,
