The Coptic Church is not part of the Eastern Orthodox Church that includes the Greek, Russian, Serbian, Romanian etc. Churches, but rather part of a body that is often referred to as the Oriental Orthodox Church or the non-Chalcedonian Orthodox Church. The Oriental Orthodox do not have an as finely developed theology of iconography as the Eastern Orthodox. But even the Eastern Orthodox have sometimes drifted from this theology and used more "realistic" icons in their churches.
I prefer the Jesus on toast "miracle".

Even though the video quality is not great, There is something you can see in the eyes of Christ that makes me shudder.

That icon depicts Robert Powell from the movie "Jesus of Nazareth" (1977).

That doesn't look like an icon. it looks like western art or a photograph.

Robertjamess,
I feel the use of shadows is an effort to make a photo or a sculpture like image. A reminder with too much detail is often over emphasized.
