I've just been reading and loving Nineteen-Eighty-Four, so when I heard about this with Cushing I had to see it. I think it would be difficult to find a better Winston - not only is he an amazing actor, his physical look and expression makes him ideal for the part.
Does anyone know if the first 1984 film from the late 50s (early 60s?) is around to be purchased? I tried for many yrs and all I get are blank stares from vid stores.
Am I the only one whose amazed at the slickness and solidness of this considering its for TV in 1954? Superbly minimalist, nothing over the top or silly, excellent.
thanks so much for uploading! i read the book and it was really good...then my dad told me about the movie and i've been dying to see it ever since. thanks again :]
This a pure british tv classic adapted by Nigel Kneale. One of his best is Year of the Sex Oylpmics that takes a look at of all things reality tv of the future. Now that's a classic
Yeah, Nigel Kneale was terrific, whether it was adapting for TV or writing his own stuff (The Quatermass Experiment, etc). I get the feeling he really wanted to stay true to the spirit of the original.
That's where Paul Simonon robbed that early Clash look from. Great film. I remember seeing it on telly when I was an adolescent. Well done for uploading.
For "Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith", George Lucas wanted Cushing, now dead, to reprise his role as Tarkin through the use of old footage and digital technology, but poor film quality made this impossible. Besides, the scene required a full-body appearance of Tarkin, which was unavailable due to Cushing's use of slippers when performing. Instead, Wayne Pygram took the role, though he underwent extensive prosthetic makeup for his brief cameo. Pygram might be on the upcoming "Star Wars" TV show.
come now, there is no need for that now is there,if you have a problem, see a doctor..i think you have a problem in the mind,im sure you would agree with me..good luck.
This is great, thank you for posting it. Peter Cushing IS Winston Churchill, his interpretation of the characters quiet desperation is far better than the two movies that followed.
I do enjoy this Teleplay but I have to admit to prefaring the film, this one suffers from 1950's sci-fi tinges, I prefer the more grim, bare atmosphere of the 1984 film.
War is peace-Freedom is Slavery-Ignorance is Strength,And the other slogan Orwell should have adde is Diversity is strength.Obviously he got the date wrong of his vision of the future but i beleave we are living in it now under New Labour and there obsession with the failed social engineering experimant of Multi-Culturalism........
yeah, the third way instead of ingsoc, the war against terror instead of the war against eurasia/eastasia, osama bin laden instead of goldstein, the red sash of aids awareness instead of the red sash of the anti sex league, webcams and cctvs instead of telescreens
Just when I believed I'd never get to see this in my whole life. I'd have bought it like a shot on DVD, in case any BBC exectives happen to be reading this... Since, for whatever stupid reasons, I can't, I have no issues with taking advantage of your generous act of public service. :D
thank you. the 1957 version with Edmond O'Brien was reported to be in such bad shape as to be unrecoverable. It is stored under Central Park in NYC. I saw it on a rack being taken away for storage. Sad. The book is still available.
Thank you very much for posting this recording! I have wanted to see this version of the literary masterpiece for years now and I missed it on BBC Four when it was repeated. Compared with the 1984 movie (made in 1984), however, this comes across as slightly amateur - superb acting esp. from Mr Cushing though, and I really enjoyed the Chestnut Tree cafe scene with Syme. Once again, thank you!
Excellent stuff, its a modern day documenty!is this avalible on dvd at all?Cushing looks so young really wanna see him in that laurel an hardy episode chumps at oxford not found it yet.
No, the origional print has never been copied. It was reshown on BBC Four for Orwells aniversary. I'm surprised to see this here. Good work for the submission#
What nonsense ... cameras watching us in britain ... being only airstrip one of oceania (american empire), being at war constantly, lies being told by the inner party ... BLOODY HELL HE MEANT 2007 !!!!
thanks so much for uploading this .. not been able to see it before now. And yes, in this version Julia is very beautiful. Anyway, its a markedly different vision of 1984 than from the John Hurt film and all the more interesting for it. Peter Cushing is so good.
Brillant. The BBC has produced some suberb Drama over the many years its been about. But this stands out, still existing to watch today.Nearly 53 years after it was shown.
Rudy Giuliani has defined freedom as submitting to authority. When I read that, I couldn't help but think of 1984: Freedom is slavery, war is peace, ignorance is strength. Unfortunately, most politicians say the same thing.
It's a brilliant piece of television; hopefully the BBC will release it soon....like they did with their QUATERMASS trilogy......Peter Cushing is perfect.....
This is a superb addition to this site especially since the Orwell Estate pulled it from future DVD distribution. It is one of the best examples of the work of the great television dramatist Nigel Kneale outside QUATERMASS
Could you tell me why the Orwell Estate pulled it out from DVD released? I felt quite disappointed when my own DVD reservation was cancelled by "MovieMail" without any explanations!... Thank you, very much!
The best adapted version of 1984, and filmed entirely live. This was the BBC in its infancy, hence glitches like microphone boom shadows bobbing into shot can be forgiven. Acting is A-class, and the broadcast raised questions in Parliament. A must see.

This is the more scarier one than the John Hurt "do". However, the book is better than the both. Check it out.
