0:54 - you can just picture playing this on your tv at home and just to piss off anyone around you and they're yelling at you " TURN THAT SHIT DOWN!!!! THAT'S TOO FUCKIN LOUD!!!" --LOL.

Never heard of the Astrocade before, "Space Fortess" was one of the earlier games ever came out. Gotta love the explosion when you die, but it lasted about a minute long, one of the most longest deaths in video game history. Kinda like "Missile Command" for the arcade, when you lost all of your cities, you might seen an explosion flashing on the screen that says "The End". That was kinda epic.
I love/d Bally Astrocade! My cousin had 1 when we were kids. I remember my uncle saying he paid $700 for it! In 1980 $'s this is around $2,000+!!! I cherished those memories so much I found/bought 1 off Ebay in 2001. $200 with 11 games! I didn't know when I bought it but it was BRAND NEW! Still in the box. Box was very worn but the game + accessories were new/shrink wrapped. Even had a bit of new smell, after all that time. I also bought a 75 game "multi-cart" from Ohio Labs for $150.
Besides playing them, memories are what I love about classic/retro gaming. My stepfather's nephew (my step-cousin?) had a Bally Astrocade. We would visit them & play all night. Also, my father played in a lounge band in Atlantic City. In 1981-82 I spent the summers there. He would take me to the 1st set of his shows. We lived in a hotel next to the casino & would leave 30min early & play Frogger, Popeye & Donkey Kong in the arcade of Resorts International Hotel & Casino. Great memories!
This game makes it clear you lost.

Like Cosmic Ark on peyote. That explosion at the end is badass.

The Bally Astrocade's video hardware was the most advanced of any video game console at the time.

That's pretty awesome, especially for 1977. The explosion at the end made it look like the game broke! :O

That must be annoying. Every time you die you have to wait 5 minutes for the explosion to finish...

Best explosion ever.

Is the Atari Jaguar homebrew game called Surrounded!, based on this?.
This game looks very cool and the way the Astrocade handles it is very impresive.

Space Fortress is the home version of the arcade game "Space Zap", also by Bally. As mindless reflex-driven games go, it's just about perfect.

You called it. I prefer the monochrome green screen in the arcade. Gigantic yellow buttons...fun.
bulagirl71 2 years ago
nah. for 1977 on a home console, that explosion is unbelievably cool. even by todays standards its still impressive.
