That's obvious that game has changed these days and players, especially from the NBA are seriously athletic (luckily they stopped trying to be like Schwarzenegger as the did in 90's) but folks, do not forget the game has its own rules and despite european (and also NBA players at that time) players looked weak - they were well trained sportsmen and had all the features needed to be a good athlet: focus, lightning reflex, intelligence, attitude.

Petrovic was one of the few people that gave Jordan defensive problems. You get better by studying your opponents' strengths and weaknesses. That's obvious that game has changed these days and players, especially from the NBA are seriously athletic (luckily they stopped trying to be like Schwarzenegger as the did in 90's) but folks, do not forget the game has its own rules and despite european (and also NBA players at that time) players looked weak - they were well trained sportsmen and had all the features needed to be a good athlet: focus, lightning reflex, intelligence, attitude.

In the 80 when Magic, Bird and Jordan era use to played like euro players using the logic of the game with fundamentals. I think todays NBA is more marketing than real basketballl fundamentals. Based off these comments, my fellow American people are most likely from a younger generation that did not get to watch Petrovic play an entire game. Petrovic was one of the few people that gave Jordan defensive problems. You get better by studying your opponents' strengths and weaknesses. Another relateviley unknown to the younger generations is a PG named Sasha Djordjevic (one of the best underrated from this generation)

To be honest, watching this, the defense was pathetic, they're so unathletic, they have no handles, heck, they can't even shoot as well as half the nba players. I mean look at all the Free Throws they missed.

in the NBA, players get so much about defense, that they just evolve as players. Oscar lost a great chance to be just a better player. if he was well trained defensively, this 'weak spot' in his game would have become much more softened.
and due to his athletic ability, that's the same thing...
Nene won likew 40 pounds when he joined the NBA from Brazil, so i think american coaches could have done a great job on Oscar, too. well, they always do. :]

If he had played better defense, he might have gotten more playing time. As for Schmidt, it's impossible to know how he would've played if he had joined the NBA. All we can do is speculate.

Oscar avaraged 34,6 pts in 11 seasons in Italy. He's the all time scoring leader in Olympics, with a 28.8 pts average in 5 olympics. In Seoul, 88, he scored 42.3 pts per game. Nobody scored more points than him in the history of the game: 49,703 pts. You can even say that Petrovic was better, but not by the numbers. Oscar never played in the NBA cause if he did he he would not be able to play for Brazil national team.

Oscar was a great European player but wasn't athletic that athletic so he wouldn't have been able to get his own shot in the NBA. In the NBA, with its 24-second clock, he'd have been exposed. Someone on this board had the nerve to say that Petrovic was more talented than Jordan. Jordan was one of the five best athletes ever -- as well as the best player ever.
