  • Whoa! Kia Ora Sarah! I sub to your channel but I have been a bit slack about watching vids in the last month and missed this going up. I'm glad you like the vid, and appreciate your additional thoughts. Hmm, with this horrible Tokyo summer, I rather wish I was up in Niseko myself right now!

    Peace

  • The best way for me to learn a language is to totally immerse myself. When I studied in Italy, I picked up the language quickly -- because I had to! I couldn't get laundry done, order food, etc. unless I picked up some Italian. And of course, all the music and tv shows were in Italian. Now I don't remember most of it, as I'm now 26 and haven't practiced in 6 years. But I maintain that the easiest way to learn is to just dive in head-first -- and KEEP PRACTICING! Don't be like me! ;)

  • Hi Sara, I always enjoy and appreciate what you do with this show. Thanks!

BTW I have a question. How long do you say for native English speakers who study Japanese to understand the contents of Japanese TV news show mostly with their eyes closed (without any help from visual images) if not completely?

I say for Japanese it takes for almost four years to understand CNN with their eyes closed just mostly.

  • So true about learning what you need. I tried learning a bunch of different phrases before going to Japan, but when I got there I think I only remembered and used about five of them, every day.

  • What often happens to me when I speak nglish is that I tend to try to speak like native.I

know I should not and I can't be the one.Sometimes I hate to see myself speaking English on YT vid I uploaded because I can tell it doesn't work as well as I want it. The reason why I speak like that is because I wanna myself look cool(kakkoii), but like you said, I have to get over my ego and accept my currently ability of speaking English. I tend to try to speak English more than I actually can speak.

  • It's very simple thing to get over but it still bothers me and very difficult to get over. And I don't speak English like I write here. Actually I speak more Japanized broken English. That's the problem, too. You may know what I'm saying. This vid means a lot!

  • Thanks for the tips. You are a brave woman(How can you go to Japan whithout speaking japanese?

  • ...and eventually, we will have the ultimate computer! The Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy.

  • About learning a language.

I think it would be a good recommendation to start of with just listen to the language, nothing else! You could more or less stop watching TV and instead watch movies and TV shows (on YouTube maybe) with the language of your choice. This goes hand in hand with the statement that you'll need to surround yourself with the language in order to understand it better, and hear it clearly!

  • After listening to it long enough you will start to hear the different pronunciations a lot more clearly, and this is obviously the key to speak and understand the language. To "an unexperienced ear" it is very hard to hear variations which for a native speaker is very clear. The grammar and such should be dealt with later!

  • I have myself been especially surrounded by the Korean language since many years now. It all started out with movies (the hallyu), but after I saw amusing variety shows I got hooked! (here on YouTube, without subs those days) And from variety shows sparked the interest in the music. So it all added up, and became a huge part of my life.

  • Nowadays I can say for sure that almost all of the entertainment I watch and listen to is Korean! That's how I've become more certain I will chose to learn that language eventually. Before I thought about Japanese, but since I only watch movies and listen to some music from there I don't feel the same urge at all.

  • I am Also learning to speak telepathically.Nice thought bubble formation. Great Show! Very useful and entertaining.
