France, for instance, before 1914, did not function as a state. The "French" didn't even share a common language or cultural history in most places. Britain and the US didn't effectively function as a state until the late 19th c either.

@PRKing1988 But you do have a point about the one unifying feature about the Palestinians. Christians and Muslim Arabs alike all pretty much resent Israel's interference in their daily lives. Israel has an option. It can behave like the Britions did with the Irish, it can do what the US did to its natives (but both are morally unacceptable) or it can work for a lasting and fair peace (which is the best way to go).
