Well, I'll tell you this, I worked as a station manager for metro at the Naylor Rd station. This young lady who in '07 was 19 or 20 can't remember her name would enter the station very often going to work. But I tell you this from this video and to see this young lady you would say she is the spitting image of Mitty Collier. This about all I can tell you.
I see there are two dislikes to this video. Whomever they are they have some serious issues, because how can anyone dislike this song the way this lady sang it. This song was made for her. Noone can ever sing it the way she did.
this song came out around 1965, a girl in jr high school sang it in a talent show and it brought down the house thank you for posting this for us old fuddy duddy's
all i can say is that THIS is true music; this tune will still be standing long after beyonce, rihanna, and any of the so-called 'singers' today are old haggard and with sagging silicone down to their knees and rumps of cottage cheese. back then a singer didn't need vulgar dance moves or to appear onstage damn near naked, they need only have true talent and mitty collier had it in spades!
@darchylde612 Well said. I remember my parents playing this song. She did not get the fame deserved to her bcs during that time whites were not into black music. However, as you stated many of the early stars did not get the recognition as deserved, such as Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, Etta James, Tina Turner, Platters, so many deserving ppl and groups just stood on talent alone. No gimmicks, no vulgarity. God Bless them all.
i GUESS YALL WANT HER TO BE MIXED. OR LOOK LIKE A CLOWN WITH STRINGY HAIR. like How they want Halle Berry to be Theola Kilgore. look up this is my prayer, and see how some asshole want her to be Halle Berry.
WOW! I'm sorry to say I'd never heard of her before I came across this video. So many talented people didn't even make it this far, spending their lives singing in obscurity in small clubs, or in church.
Ms Collier I have to say this song is absolutely fantastic. I was a kid in the 60s when this song came out and my mom, the queen of music in our household bought the record and played and had neighbors in our building loving it. I believe we saw you on a show on TV singing this song back in the day. I can't remember what show it was but I live in CT so I do remember. Keep on singing.
There are so many talented, soulful singers I've never heard of! I recently discovered a few, because I love this sort of music. Only a few are more widely known today; there were so many people that had this sort of talent back then, I guess only a few could. I wish even one of them was around to keep making this sort of music today!
Chess Records was cranking out an amazing body of work in the mid-sixties that many people forget including Mitty, Billy Stewart, Etta James, The Radiants, Fontella Bass, Jackie Ross, Tony Clarke and The Jaynettes. The list can go on.
You think of all the great voices over the years Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin and more recently Mary J Blige. She may not be as well know as those ladies but boy does Mitty deserve to be up there with those greats. An awesome voice and fantastic post thanks ;D
Passing by the old Chess Record building on 21st and S. Michigan, I thought about Mitty Colliers "I Had A Talk With My Man". I heard it for the first time while visiting my cousins in Chicago back in 1964. I remember hearing it quite a bit at house parties back home in Detroit soon after. Man, what a song.
Because in those days everything was shot with a rhythm click machine. They hear music. then they lay the audio track of the original record for broadcast. that's what we hear. 1960s dance shows were notorius for off beat dancing scenes.
Imagine its the mid 60s you turn on the radio and songs like this are playing. I can see my mom cleaning the house or doing the laundry and just enjoying the music. Somehow it doesn't feel the same today when I turn on the radio. But man when I get out the oldies and start playing the old songs my neighbors come out of the wood work and yell hey Dan turn that up! I doubt if most of todays music will stand up like this great performance by Miss Mitty Collier..
Mitti, I was just talking about you earlier today! What I said to a friend of mine and long-time radio DJ was that "I had a talk with my Man" is a timeless recording that does not in any way reveal its age. It's one of the most superbly produced cuts of all time. It was ahead of its time. In fact, I'll be playing it on my next show. Let me know how I can reach you and I'll remind you. You can listen online, but I don't want to broadcast it here.
She sings like they plucked her straight out the choir. SUch great emotion in this song. I usually try not to say anything bad, but the go go girls are doing some sad dancing to this song. Maybe I just had to be there and can't understand, but the dancing is right pitiful in my eyes and humble opinion.
Amazing singer & song! Mitty is originally from Birmingham, Alabama, which is my home state & she should be inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame ( if she hasn't been inducted already). She and Alabama deserves this honor for recognizition of such an awesome vocalist!
I totallly agree with you but if you haven't heard she died about 3 years ago she was living in my home town Gary Indiana and head a church with her husband. She was a great person and wonderful soulful singer, and truly missed.
I am not dead, but very much alive. I have never lived in Gary, IN and my husband, who is deceased was never in ministry with me. I live in Chicago, IL and am the pastor of More Like Christ Ministries located at 8201 S. Dobson, Chicago. Come and see for yourself! I am alive preaching, singing, and living a totally Christian life. Hope this information gav eyou soon joy (smiles).
Well hello, noone could be more happier than I to know that you are alive an well. There was article in The Gary Post Tribune, about Mitty Collier deceased about 3 years ago I still have the article. Never the less I most happy that you are fine and will surely come to visit your church. I must let Herb Kent know this news. I still say you're one of the industry best singers and I know you're really powerful in the church. Much more joy now !
Herb Kent knows that I am alive. He has done an interview with me on his show. I saw him a few weeks ago at a friend of ours homegoing. Thanks for your love
I've not talk with Herb in over a year and we hadn't had a conversation where I could have discuss much but I surely will make sure that we have that great conversation about the "GREAT MITTY COLLIER" Alive and well and highly blessed, take care much love to you and yours.
Hey guys, if you want to hear some amazing "obscure" Soul, try to get Mojo Magazine. Every other Month, they have a CD where they feature the best of R & B. It's a British Mag and as you know, they've been die hard fans of Black Artists.
Amazing song by an amazing and gifted singer! It's a crying shame that this fab song and lots of other songs by Mitty and other artists sadly "slipped through the cracks" and didn't become the big hits they should have been.
Chess records...1964. Based on Rev. James Cleveland's "I Had a Talk with the Lord". I think it went to #52 on the Billboard Hot 100. At the time the magazine didn't publish a seperate R&B chart (from 11/63 to 1/65). At the time there were so many records crossing back & forth from both charts Billboard simply surmised they didn't need an R&B chart. However, it was later determined that some singles were "slipping through the cracks" so in January '65 the R&B/Soul chart was reinstated.
this song is so mezmerizing it will put you in a trans beLieve me... everytime i hear this song it make's me think about this women whom i sadly had to remove myself from because of certain issue's that we had... and each time i hear this song it give's me knot's in my stomach as a reminder of her
I'm just a white dude from the Pittsburgh suburbs but me and the fellas wore the grooves off this one back in the day. Sir Walter , Hal Brown and the DJ's on WAMO
Rev. Mitty Collier. Bumped into her about a year ago. She's got a church somewhere on the southside of Chicago. She was lookin' GOOOD! But then again....I'm pretty old too.
@mittycollier In Marlow Heights Maryland there is a young lady that could pass for your twin, if you were the same age, and I mean Identical. I first saw this video about three years or so ago and it was the first time I saw an image of you after all these years. And when I saw this video I asked this young lady if she was related to you because of the age difference, she said no, but the resemblence is uncanny. If there is ever a movie made about you she should have the part, find her.
Love you Reverend Mitty!! Also loved directing your life story on stage in Chicago in the 90's. As you always say...love you to pieces...you and your daughter, Alicia who sings as well as you. Love, Barbara Green Chicago memories.
I bought this record in England 44 years ago [and still have it] and this the first time I've ever seen Mitty. Those were the days when records were bought for their music, not hype or video
Isn't that the TRUTH!??? I was a sophomore in high school when this came out. I bought the 45 and wore the grooooooooooooovvvvvvvvvvves off. This was such pure music; no fluff, no filler... It's what's lacking today...purity.
...come on now, this song can make a lot of women wail and cry like a baby...men don't talk like they use to..if they did, things sure could be different.....
(I Had A Talk With My GOD...) Thanks for the post. Now check out Linda Jones' 'For Your Precious' and you just might loose it. One Time For Chicago,we've been producing a long time.
Thanks for posting this one. I remember discovering this in my parent's collection...I would sing this song using a hairbrush as my mic...I was 6 or 7.
The song was originally I had a talk with God by Rev. James Cleveland. I was asked by Leonard Caston, the pianist at Chess to help him with the song. I did. My producer, Billy Davis came in and hear it - changed the words to "..with my man...and the rest is history.
I went to my 40th class reunion last night, the first time i danced to this song was December 1965. When they played this song i danced again with the same guy. Thanks for the memory
fab, fab, fab - now anyone tell me what these women on those boxes are supposed to be? Annoying? Decoration? Chorist? Talented? Answers on a postcard, please ....
oh i was searching that since i was fifteen!! i heard it on the radio and the speaker told her name and the title of the song. but i wasn't able to understand the spelling, and so i waited ... since now!! i'm so glad thank you!!!
This song reminds me of my grandmother and my father who are passed away-RIP-They used to love her music and when I got older I started to appreciate their love of the classics like this. I used to hear this song everytime My friends and I used to go back to school on Sundays to Alcorn State Unv.
Yes, Yes, Yes, I have been looking for this song. thanks for posting it. I thought it was Etta James. It was one of my mother's favorite and now one of my mines.
Mitty and Etta were label mates at Chess Records around the same time. If you can get your hands on Mitty's best of, buy it. You won't be disappointed.
Mitty's such a great singer/stylist - if anyone can find her 1961 "I Gotta Get Away From It All", it's a classic!! (although an obscure one) - I've got the Chess single but don't know how to upload it on here.
Before my time. Luck for me, I never let that stop me! Always looking for those special voices. Excellent selection. Thanks for the post.
P.S.- I hope you don't mind if I plug a couple of other names here. I hate to think that so few people nowadays know about them - Esther Philips, Ruby Johnson, Ella Washington. Happy listening!
Now this is some serious R&B from the 60's. Always have enjoyed this song, that I think is relativly unknown to a lot of people. Mitty had to have been in love with someone to sing this song the way she sang it, classic!!
where did you find this? this is one of my favorites. what station was this, it looks like the same one where patti and the bluebelles perfromed. what about the white gogo boots and the lipsynching? the man wasn't even playing the piano, why would they have all those people onstage and not do it live. still so beautiful?
They were limited in technology, more importantly, these shows were very low budget too. cutting corners was rabid. the music soared regardless. it was not a lot of pay for a 2 min. TV appearance in those days. No Ed Sullivan Budgets.limited, square TV producers too.
What a sweet love song. It makes my soul smile. Thank you Mitty.

You were supposed to reach for me when you got back in the city about 7 months ago. I'll certainly be looking out for you.

That's a cool story, it's profoundly sad how it has come to just what you said.

Isn't that the TRUTH!??? I was a sophomore in high school when this came out. I bought the 45 and wore the grooooooooooooovvvvvvvvvvves off. This was such pure music; no fluff, no filler... It's what's lacking today...purity.

James Cleaveland sang a similar song; "I had a talk with God last night".
106harlem232 3 years ago
The song was originally I had a talk with God by Rev. James Cleveland. I was asked by Leonard Caston, the pianist at Chess to help him with the song. I did. My producer, Billy Davis came in and hear it - changed the words to "..with my man...and the rest is history.

Yes, Yes, Yes, I have been looking for this song. thanks for posting it. I thought it was Etta James. It was one of my mother's favorite and now one of my mines.
cbw5355 3 years ago
Mitty and Etta were label mates at Chess Records around the same time. If you can get your hands on Mitty's best of, buy it. You won't be disappointed.

Mitty's such a great singer/stylist - if anyone can find her 1961 "I Gotta Get Away From It All", it's a classic!! (although an obscure one) - I've got the Chess single but don't know how to upload it on here.

Amazing song! I think it would sound even more amazing! If you add classical guitar to the mix. I mean Nylon string solos would be a nice touch!

P.S.- I hope you don't mind if I plug a couple of other names here. I hate to think that so few people nowadays know about them - Esther Philips, Ruby Johnson, Ella Washington. Happy listening!

All three excellent soul singers! Have records by all three of them, and they're exceptional!

Now this is some serious R&B from the 60's. Always have enjoyed this song, that I think is relativly unknown to a lot of people. Mitty had to have been in love with someone to sing this song the way she sang it, classic!!

where did you find this? this is one of my favorites. what station was this, it looks like the same one where patti and the bluebelles perfromed. what about the white gogo boots and the lipsynching? the man wasn't even playing the piano, why would they have all those people onstage and not do it live. still so beautiful?
laron214 4 years ago
They were limited in technology, more importantly, these shows were very low budget too. cutting corners was rabid. the music soared regardless. it was not a lot of pay for a 2 min. TV appearance in those days. No Ed Sullivan Budgets.limited, square TV producers too.
