When people earn salaries of 30, 40, 50+ thousand annually ( more than 60% of the populace ), that is simply a result of competition among companies to lure skilled labor. Skilled being the key word. As skilled labor is scarcer than unskilled labor, companies have, and will always, need to compete among each other for the most qualified employees. Government regulations did not do this.

The government was literally nowhere to be found in much of the country when compared to today's federal and banking stranglehold on liberties and wealth. You're referring to the corporatists. In 1973 gold was $35 per ounce. Today, gold's price is $1537 per ounce. Today's dollar is worth 43 times LESS than the same dollar in 1973, just under forty years ago.
The country was founded on protectionist capitalism, not laissez-faire capitalism. Tariffs were imposed on imports to pay govenment and protect american industry and labor. If the founders would not have had the wisdom make tariffs a major part of our economy, than slave societies would have provided the needs of the country, instead of allowing our industry to develop and the middleclass to evolve. Actually the reverse of what is happening today. 80% of new wealth created goes to top 1%.
The thing that bother me about Ron Paul thinking is his distaste for welfare state. The thing that lifted the majority out of poverty and provided some kind of security against abusive capitalist forces. Its like the system should not be for people but for the elite and the economic system itself, not the other way around. I cannot support this...even if the anti war/imperial policies are sound.
@daveruda Because we CAN'T DAMN AFFORD IT ANYMORE! The welfare state is the worst idea to happen ever! It discourages competition. It makes people dependent on the government. We should have welfare and food stamps for people so they don't starve- that won't change under Paul. But health care? "reduced housing"? other social programs that destroy the private sector so that the unemployed can be rich? It's an awful idea. We should have basic welfare for the poor and nothing else.

Progressive taxing and slash war budget ect could change this. Sweden has a stong welfare state and is handeling the crisis alot better than low tax countries like USA, UK and Greece. Dont have to kill competition at all.

It was $500 million by the end of 1862, thus making him the BOOM factor from a proportional standpoint. Reagan (tripled the debt), Bush I (nearly doubled it), and Bush II (more than doubled it) are all responsible for nearly $10 trillion of our current $14.4 trillion dollar debt.

Ron Paul supporters have not been happy with any of the modern presidents with the exception of Reagan (but only on his domestic policy). We did support SDI and the military buildup but NOT the engagements overseas, whether it be Vietnam, Grenada, Lebanon, Iraq I, Kosovo, Afghanistan (not the troop part, but instead a heavy attack), Iraq II, and now Libya.

But the difference between Reagan debt and Liberal debt is that Reagan's was a one-time, long-term use equipment purchase that could be sold in the future. Medicare, Medicaid, Obamacare, and various handouts have no end in sight and cannot be stopped to save money.

@AlienTruth Even post-slavery we were the fastest growing economy. The reason is because the government was SMALL. Back in 1880 people paid little taxes- all the government did was maintain the military. They didn't care what you bought, and the armed forces were small enough to afford but big enough to defend ourselves. Up until the 1900's when the economy became stock-reliant we were booming. Then we started regulating food, healthcare, the economy, business, etc.

A majority of welfare recipients (in the UK - not sure about US) do not work, many have never worked in their lives. Also try not to cloud the issues. Welfare statism, solidarity (collectivism? mass movements? what do you mean), economic symbiosis, corporate power - these are all separate issues. Throwing them all together at once isn't sensible.

Not true. Most Americans earn salaries that are well in excess of minimum wage, the Middle Class.
When people earn salaries of 30, 40, 50+ thousand annually ( more than 60% of the populace ), that is simply a result of competition among companies to lure skilled labor. Skilled being the key word. As skilled labor is scarcer than unskilled labor, companies have, and will always, need to compete among each other for the most qualified employees. Government regulations did not do this.

@AgrivatedKillah Slaves were a thing of their time period, nor do I excuse it. But hypocrisy should not stop anyone from fighting for what is right. Thomas Jefferson was referring to the freedom of his citizens from the controlling European powers and, as the intelligent person he was, knew he could only fight one battle at a time. Liberation of the slaves was Lincoln's battle for freedom, which also demonstrates dissent of a slave system that had been established before Jefferson's generation.

The government was literally nowhere to be found in much of the country when compared to today's federal and banking stranglehold on liberties and wealth. You're referring to the corporatists. In 1973 gold was $35 per ounce. Today, gold's price is $1537 per ounce. Today's dollar is worth 43 times LESS than the same dollar in 1973, just under forty years ago.

The country was founded on protectionist capitalism, not laissez-faire capitalism. Tariffs were imposed on imports to pay govenment and protect american industry and labor. If the founders would not have had the wisdom make tariffs a major part of our economy, than slave societies would have provided the needs of the country, instead of allowing our industry to develop and the middleclass to evolve. Actually the reverse of what is happening today. 80% of new wealth created goes to top 1%.

The thing that bother me about Ron Paul thinking is his distaste for welfare state. The thing that lifted the majority out of poverty and provided some kind of security against abusive capitalist forces. Its like the system should not be for people but for the elite and the economic system itself, not the other way around. I cannot support this...even if the anti war/imperial policies are sound.

@daveruda Because we CAN'T DAMN AFFORD IT ANYMORE! The welfare state is the worst idea to happen ever! It discourages competition. It makes people dependent on the government. We should have welfare and food stamps for people so they don't starve- that won't change under Paul. But health care? "reduced housing"? other social programs that destroy the private sector so that the unemployed can be rich? It's an awful idea. We should have basic welfare for the poor and nothing else.

Progressive taxing and slash war budget ect could change this. Sweden has a stong welfare state and is handeling the crisis alot better than low tax countries like USA, UK and Greece. Dont have to kill competition at all.

It was $500 million by the end of 1862, thus making him the BOOM factor from a proportional standpoint. Reagan (tripled the debt), Bush I (nearly doubled it), and Bush II (more than doubled it) are all responsible for nearly $10 trillion of our current $14.4 trillion dollar debt.

Ron Paul supporters have not been happy with any of the modern presidents with the exception of Reagan (but only on his domestic policy). We did support SDI and the military buildup but NOT the engagements overseas, whether it be Vietnam, Grenada, Lebanon, Iraq I, Kosovo, Afghanistan (not the troop part, but instead a heavy attack), Iraq II, and now Libya.

@mrbhave That's exactly what I just said. However, Reagan's policies promoted growth, but the debt did swell under him due to military buildup. But the difference between Reagan debt and Liberal debt is that Reagan's was a one-time, long-term use equipment purchase that could be sold in the future. Medicare, Medicaid, Obamacare, and various handouts have no end in sight and cannot be stopped to save money.

Now we need to reform entitlements and cut down on our military overseas. @AlienTruth Even post-slavery we were the fastest growing economy. The reason is because the government was SMALL. Back in 1880 people paid little taxes- all the government did was maintain the military. They didn't care what you bought, and the armed forces were small enough to afford but big enough to defend ourselves. Up until the 1900's when the economy became stock-reliant we were booming. Then we started regulating food, healthcare, the economy, business, etc.

A majority of welfare recipients (in the UK - not sure about US) do not work, many have never worked in their lives. Also try not to cloud the issues. Welfare statism, solidarity (collectivism? mass movements? what do you mean), economic symbiosis, corporate power - these are all separate issues. Throwing them all together at once isn't sensible.

Roosevelt was under such pressure from the united workforce that a new deal was made as you know. .Solidarity and activism has been the force behind most of the improvements in average peoples lives. Never a gift, always a fight. Just to make myself clear on that issue.

@Hodoprime and @ bohemianwriter - If you did your research you would realize that in the UK over half of the insurance/medical industry is still "Private" and the minority is government run. There is no country in the world that has completely government run healthcare, even Canada has many private hospitals and private insurance companies. So I don't know if that means anything to you two but I guess it would be a +1 for both of you? There's a free market and there's government competition?
