  • YEEESH....! The guy could have at least learned the Mandolin parts ! Gone off Robert Plant recently! His solo stuff is lame ! Peace Ye`all !!

  • Isn't YouTube marvellous?!

  • People are more interested in ripping on her singing, yet no one points out Robert Plant messing up the lyrics at the beginning of the song. It's sad we lost a talent like Sandy Denny so soon, but I am glad to hear any version of this song with Plant on lead and a decent accompaniment.

  • Shame Planty can't get those high notes anymore.

  • well, she's no Sandy Denny, is she...

  • Hate her! He's mine! D: ahah! I love you Roobert:')

  • sounds great, her voice is smooth as glass

  • I don't get it, wasn't she supposed to represent the town crier in the song? Well she does not sound determined enough to encourage scared crowd in a city under siege. Those people in the song were encouraged to "Dance in the dark of night/ sing to the morning light" in spite of their fears.

  • she sings so awful!!

  • @ellenripley71 Can you post a video of yourself singing, please.

  • A beautiful song . But though I'm a great fan of both Led Zep and Fairport , I don't like this video so much .

    Were they so tired ?

    Boring !

    Sorry for my english

  • @Merdatout Have a listen to the original - not much difference; I thought they did a great job.

  • he looks like Norman Wisdom in that massive jacket - did he nick it from a charity shop or what ? Percy you legend man !!!

  • Sound quality is pretty good and so is the film0great post.

  • Reading Richard Thompson's bio right now, what a story! The Eagles of all people, wanted him to join their band. He thought they were OK individually, but horribly miserable as a band. Fairport has made a fraction of their money, but at least they LIKE each other!

  • @rocktenniscat Really The Eagle wanted Richard Thompson?..Damn that would have been very interesting..

  • @LBjim - Yes - TRUE, check it out in his bio "Strange Affair", Richard & some of the FC guys played at LA's famous Troubadour, where Linda Ronstadt, JD Souther, Jackson Browne, Leadon, Frey, Henly, etc., hung out. They convinced Linda to come up and they backed her on "When Will I be Loved". Everybody loved RT's guitar playing....he was so well received - in fact, he hardly ever played acoustic guitar til later in his solo career. A folkie AND a rocker par excellence!

  • @rocktenniscat Cool, thanks..

  • What a beautifull version of this classic song with a a classic band

  • i am 15 and have been coming here with my family for years!

  • this is freaking awesome of such a great song!!!!

  • Great cover!!!!

  • is a cracking version...i love it!

  • well the problem is the guy playing the mandolin is playing a different song. that is really the problem with this version. the girl is fine and so is plant..- the tempo is a tad slow but still and all not bad.

  • watch, dont fish and drive!

  • Great Job my friends !

  • Classic!!!

  • awesome - what a great reunion - they are perfect together

    so cool

  • Pure class.

    Thanks farnishk.

  • one of my favorites but the LZ IV album version.

  • Fantastic robert plant is so so adaptable and moves on great great rocker and now ballads .......

  • @bobjanes855 In an agreeable way, I want to say that Robert and LZ were doing ballads back then too. Battle of Evermore was on LZ lV, Friends, on 3, Babe' I'm gonn leave you, 1, Ramble on, on 2and on and on... really, Stairway to Heaven is a ballad.

  • Am I totally wrong or was Richard Thompson in this band ?

  • @auto4union You are totally right.

  • @farnishk He`s AWESOME ! RT is one of the best acoustic players ever !! Peace Ye`all !!

  • @auto4union yes he was he was on Unhalfbricking

  • @auto4union yes richard thompson was !

  • @auto4union He was together with iain matthews also together in iain matthews southern comfort

  • @auto4union : what band?

  • Is that Dave Swarbrick playing the mandolin here?

  • @Mikemaniax No, it's Chris Leslie - he's starting to look a bit like Swarb, though.

  • @farnishk I thought so. Didn't quite look like him. What is Swarb up to these days?

  • @Mikemaniax Swarb's still touring regularly both solo and with Martin Carthy. Saw him play at a club in Tonbridge, Kent, UK, last Monday. Not only saw him but had the supreme privilege of playing a "floor spot" before he came on...faintly ludicrous in restrospect, the idea of someone of my very mediocre talents appearing at the same gig as Swarb!

  • *holds up lighter*

  • Be sure not to miss the 1994 Unledded DVD that backed up the cd album. They do this and other songs backed up by a traditional Egyptian band and a wonderful Egyptian vocalist. DON"T MISS IT!

  • This song is also famous as one of about five LZ songs that contained referrences to The Lord of the Rings.

  • the lady has a nice voice but she's singing a completely different song.

    pity.

  • Robert Plant was awsome but I think that she could have listened to the song more before she was allowed to sing with this rock legend?

  • I dont think there is anyone more classy than Plant.

  • @amccann7 What about Sandy?

  • @utz14 yes, of course.

  • @amccann7 robert plant is universal not stuck on a theme !!

  • @amccann7 Not taking anthing away from sandy she is brilliant

  • Still gives me Chills... as if i just played it on the Turntable way back.. the Drums STILL shake...Dance in the Dark Night... Please KLJ Help Me... bring the balance back... Bravo on a great moment at Fairport...Bring it back bring it back... Tommy Windows Vero Beach.......

  • WELL D0NE

  • alison krauss does a better job to me

  • Great footage---sorry to ask such a banal question, but what camera did you shoot this with? thanks

  • @Sutterjack Thank you - it's just a Sony Handycam single CCD, nothing special.

  • his name is Dave, I´m sorry!

  • Matthew Pegg on bass, knew him from Jethro Tull, thanks for uploading...

  • @91Lizardking Freudian slip perhaps - Matt is Dave's son, and a good guitarist by all accounts.

  • Still got it, Mr Plant

  • one of the most beautiful songs ever written

  • Not bad for oldies, why didn't Bob take his jacket of and just get into it, you can see he wanted to...

  • Argh! I was there and it was AWESOME. Long live Cropredy!

  • kiedyś LedZep zaprosili Sandy do tej niezwykłej wyjątkowej pieśni - po latach Fairports zaprosili Planty'ego .........nigdy nie wiemy co przyniesie przyszłość - who knows where the time goes....... to już tyle lat bez Sandy i Bonzo - a ich muzyka żyje wiecznie !

  • suggest checking out Heart doing this. very good imho of course

  • she sure does know how to murder a good song

  • @studeddead

That's a little harsh... but you're right in principle: trying to sing anything Sandy sang is rather foolish...

  • @romantic2 No. Trying to sing anything Plant sang is rather foolish.

  • This is probobly the best live version of this song. This is the one Zeppelin's song which is much much better in studio than live, because its very hard to sing and only Sandy Denny could sing it perfectly.

    sorry for bad english.

    love and peace, btorhers

    Poland

  • Glad I was there in person!

  • KRIKRI FOREVER! WE LOVE (DONA)YOU! Great tribute to Sandy, she wouldn't deny it!

  • SANDY DENNY

  • Not as far as I can see.

  • Thanks for posting . The girls does her very best but if something is clear after listening to this performance it's that Sandy Denny is so sadly missed. Like Elvis who would have been 75 today.

  • ROBERT PLANT FOREVER!!!!!

  • Very beautiful. We won't try to make clear sense of Robert's juvenile lyrics here but the voices harmonize sweetly.

  • Wing it back, moudiwort....

  • Simply amazing. That is all I can say. Well, except, I do miss Sandy on this song.

  • Im not really knocking this cause its great but... check out the plant Krauss version , its better

  • @neptown A better version to a memorial tribute? This song was for Sandy,

  • @neptown There's also a great version by the Lovemongers (Ann & Nancy Wilson of "Heart")

  • What an incredible performance! Kristina's not Sandy but WTF!!

  • INCREDIBLE! I love this! She was such an amazing artist! Thank you, for posting. EXCELLENT.

  • Wow....this performance chills me to the bone. I have to say that Kristina gives this song a chill of its own..a very ageless ethereal feel, amazing..I am also surprised by the still great voice of Robert Plant, I have always thought that performing live was not his greatest talent but I hear that I have to change my views..

  • Why are so many people keen on picking holes in Kristina's performance. Of course she doesnt sound like Sandy, and does it matter if she is 1/8 tone flat at the beginning, or whatever it was. A damned fine performance from where I am sitting.

  • I'm soooo damned jealous, my daughter was there but not me. What an experience. Brilliant

  • Comment removed

  • most excellent!!! he still has it going on! love it!!!!

  • Could I have something in English please. And perhaps a more constructive comment.

  • Heart does a nice acoustic version of this song

  • wow...plant keeps a strong voice even tough all these years....the female voice....a goddess

  • Great stuff . Plants voice is just strong . It hasnt weakeodned in all these decades . And Kristina Donahue is wonderful --------

  • My friends, that's just beautiful! Tears in my eyes...

  • brilliant thanks so much cant wait for cropredy 09

  • wow alternate ending and the strawbs

  • holy fuck, this is great.

  • Many thanks for posting this video.

I have many warm memories of seeing Fairport with Sandy Denny in Sydney sometime in the early, or mid 70's. Of course I also have many Zeppelin memories from that era as well. It is really great to hear the Battle of Evermore performed by Fairport together with the inimitable Robert Plant. I can't believe that it has been 30 years since Sandy Denny passed away. Nonetheless, Kristina Donahue sings it well and honours her memory.

  • i would never suspect such a good voice from robert upon meeting him, its crazy what he does with it

  • it's amazing to remember. I miss those days.

  • sublime...fantastico...magia pura.

    grazie per questo video

    gianni

  • Throughout the threads relating to Plant and Led Zeppelin, there are views that this is better than that or whatever. What really sticks out for me is that so many artists revere and pay homage to tracks such as this. I find it wonderful. Perhaps that's a bit of hubris, but god I love the fact that Battle for Evermore can be so wonderfully effective even 40 years on!! Irrespective of whose rendition it is.

  • Kudos for the camera work given it was chilly, wet and we'd all been there for about 11 hours by this point - this will be a cherished memory for some years I suspect

  • Whoever says she does a bad job didn't actually watch the whole video. It's pretty damn good.

  • Crop*r*edy is in Oxfordshire, UK. a lovely village with a wonderful festival.

  • where is "cropedy"

  • She's not that bad.

  • And I'm sure you could do better with one night of rehearsals - please don't be rude if you don't have all the information.

  • I was at the gig and Kristina was ACE!! it's more than a little imposing playing a song of this magnitude in a tribute to a singer whose legend is nothing less than extraordinary, with a band as immense as fairport and joined by the man who wrote it, even in spite of all this Kristina displayed an amazing vocal performance, unique instead of mimicking.

    You are wrong basically.

  • Love it all.

  • More than a honest reprise! It touches your heart.

  • No offense, but watching this made me want to go hear the version with Sandy Denny in it. Love Sandy so much and her voice on that song is just unmatchable.

  • 100% with you there - this is close but cigar (or even a roll-up)

  • wow!!!!!

  • I love you Bob!

  • It was so muddy that night! Best vid I got was on my phone, but this owns all. Thank you for posting this!

  • I haven't kept up with Plant after hearing of the latest CD releases, and the Zep reunion. I suspect an album there in time, or DVD. Thanx much for this. EXCELLENT tune!

  • AG.

This was, literally, the best moment of my life. Ever.

Never thought I'd see him perform, thought that was a privelidge only my Dad got. BUT NO!

    Yayayay.

  • I guess Led Zeppelin doesn't matter anymore.

  • In what way? Considering that only 3 members are alive and that Percy said Led Zeppelin would never record again without Bonzo, it's refreshing that he has stood by his word.

On the same count, do you post "I guess The Beatles don't matter any more" on all Paul McCartney videos?

  • As in doesn't matter to him, clearly when he would rather tour with a stupid country singer and a part time strummer than the greatest band of all time. And really The Beatles shouldn't tour because BOTH their guitarists and one of them is a main songwriter are dead.

  • Maybe he wants people to remember when Led Zeop *were* the greatest rock band of all time rather than truck round an aged version of their former glory. If they did tour, then people would accuse them of cashing in - he can't win either way.

  • Well he does want people to remember that but he also doesn't think that they can do another good show like the o2, but people wouldn't accuse him of that they would rejoice that Led Zeppelin is back.

  • That "stupid countrysinger" won more grammies than any other female recording artist! You need to step out of your timecapsule there and move to the present!

  • Good for her really, but still I don't like her and why should come of a time capsule it was so much then and it still would be better if bands like Led Zeppelin, and Bob Marley were still around I hate this generation (of my age) I'm ashamed to be apart of it I will not except how fucked up todays world is. It is so bad because 1.Bad politicians that are dividing us all, and THE MUSIC look at all these emos, goths, "gangstas" who don't give a shit about anything and it is a big fucking deal.

  • Well, if you really feel like that about these "emo's, goths and gangstas" music you really should look into Alison Krauss' work some more! You might find you'd actually really like it! :D

For sure her work and attitude towards music is the opposite of the one you complain about!

  • I agree she does write songs with a good meaning as do most if not all country artists but I just can't stand that genre.

  • Actually she doesn't write songs herself and also she is not a countrysinger but a bluegrass singer. She is actually hardly played on country stations! ;D

I won't argue taste with you but I could argue that it seems you don't really know what you are talking about! But it is entirely up to you whether you want to educate yourself or not. Since you say you are a guitar player I really would advise you to at least check out some bluegrass guitarists like for instance Tony Rice though! :D

  • I think his voice is in better shape these last 5 years or so then during a lot of the 90's. He is singing in his more natural range...and he sings with more depth now. He can still wail away....just not on a nightly basis. Kashmir at the O2 was bloody brilliant....but night after night of that would shred him up

  • on second listen robert sounds very good.....and so does the girl.

  • Of course Led Zeppelin matters; but some people like to move forward in their lives rather than becoming nothing more than their own tribute act. Just because Robert Plant was in Led Zeppelin that doesn't mean he has to spend the rest of his life repeating it just to show it meant something to him. Maybe music as whole is what means the most to him, and he wants to continue exploring it rather than retracing his steps.

  • Maybe *he* doesn't want to. Ever consider that?

  • Then he need to change that feeling or look at that feeling as trite and still get his ass on stage.

  • He doesnt need to do anything of the sort. Its a free world and he is at total liberty to decide what he does and does not do. His whole purpose in being isnt to please the likes of you.

  • this wasn't a led zep tribute it was in memory of Sandy Denny, this was just before a brilliant rendition of Matty Groves with a fantastic Mr. Potato head video. (True)

  • Yes I think like you.......you sure...

  • "Maybe music as whole is what means the most to him, and he wants to continue exploring it rather than retracing his steps."

I'd believe you if he didn't spend the past 10+ years performing covers with the Briory of Prion, the Strange Sensations, Krauss, and the Band of Joy.

Robert Plant is ALL ABOUT retracing his steps. It's obvious that he doesn't want to deal with the baggage of LZ, and that's all. He knows he can't live up to it, with the other 2 still able to perform near peak.

  • @proptopkus This was a tribute to Sandy Denny - Robert Plant or not, I can't think of a better fitting tribute to the woman with the golden voice.

  • What a fantastic bit of footage.

Thank you so much for sharing. :)

  • i think this song would be a perfect song for amy lee to sing with robert.

  • ALOHA

  • For the benefit of anyone under 30, the FC/LZ connections are numerous - apart from Evermore. DP and JB were same band, FC played 'last' gig at Knebworth, opening for LZ and a legendary jam @ the LA Troubadour in 1970. Oh yeah, RP played at FC's 30th.

  • ALOHA

  • Kristina did a fantastic job singing with Plant on this classic. Great job!!

  • Congratulations Kristina, you gave me goosebumps knowing how far you've come. That was an amazing performance; one that all should hear.

  • I thought Kristina was great, as of course was Planty. And Chris Leslie on mandolin was pretty magic as well!

  • I don't want to start a Trans-Atlantic flame war but I think Alison Krauss sings this better. Nice job though and Sandy is missed.

  • Percy and Krauss are like a single organism, so can't argue with that at all.

  • who's singing with robert?Is she Sandy?

  • Sandy's been dead 30 years. It's Kristina Donahue, daughter of Gerry.

  • It's a real shame that it's not Sandy. Kristina's voice is Superb though and the Vibe was fantastic. (Very wet though ;-))

  • I was there, but didnt film it as i just knew mine would be rubbish ! well done to you farnishk for this and puttin it on !

  • Candice Night should do better.

    But Plant is wonderful!

  • nothing wrong with any of the vocals from where i was sitting, absolutely superb

  • This was just a wonderful moment, to be savoured for all of us who loved Sandy - and L.Z...

  • she did well. think one of the two sisters that had appeared earlier would have done better, but im no expert. what a moment that was though!

makes you realise just how good a singer sandy was!

  • where's jimmy page

  • amen

  • He was ligging backstage.

  • cant believe i missed him!! :( absolutely gutted, i was in my tent when he was there

  • I met Robert Plant backstage after the 'Sandy montage'..... he is a really nice guy but has such an iconic presence, I think Kristina did amazingly well to sing live with one of rocks biggest legends!

What a great festival! One I shall never forget. :-)

  • oh god how you could be so lucky :-))))

to be in the backstage and while he was still there... wish i were you

i met him once, and i can confirm he's funny and very kind, and incredibly humble

  • Wow! I could stand that exactly 1 minute and I am now quickly off to the antidote. Any version of the Raising sand tour that is. This woman was so completely off it's unbelievable!

  • I have perfect pitch, and it really wasn't off - although Kristina wasn't as good as Chris or Kellie while that night.

  • Actually, can that - she is about 1/8 tone flat at the beginning after listening again. It's difficult to come on cold, nervous and without a sound check (no chance of doing one in secret), so all things considered...

  • Well, that must be hell for you to have perfect pitch ;) But as for that singing, she was completely off the melody!

But then, I guess as an Alison Krauss fan, I may not have perfect pitch but my ears are used to one of the best singers out there! Maybe they are just spoiled. :D

  • Some people can pull bad singing off with aplomb: Marc Almond and Joanna Newsome are both great, and right off pitch a lot of the time. It's those who don't know they're doing it that hurt :-0

  • Oh this was such a great moment, I nearly fell over. I had to call my friend who couldnt come as her Mum was taken ill and let her listen over the phone. Not sure that Kristina was up to (much as I enjoyed her singing) Chris Whiles may have been a better choice as a foil to Roberts amazing voice. That is being a little petty - it was magic to listen to

  • I was there and this moment was amazing, my friend had just gone to toilet before he came on, You should have seen her frantically trying to get back to her seat, lol! My first time at Fairport Convention this year and I loved it, even the rain : )

  • Hope you all enjoyed Cropredy this year..I first went 1991..the family started coming with me in 1996 (the kids in push chairs)..last attended in 2004..haven't been since then due to 1 of my daughters being seriously ill..but she's on the mend and is desperate to start going to Cropredy again..so hopefully we'll be there again next year...hope Percy puts in an appearance next year...
