  • Uten steve hackett,ingen genesis...

  • hackett and banks could be perfect combination, because i have the bad feeling banks will go sone in rent, time is running.

  • Agreed Genesis in the 70's amazing and creative is another era like life u can't stop change and Genesis is whatever form is fantastic

  • why you always have so much against phill....without phil collins genesis will fall apart after relise of trespass in today you wouldnt be able to shiting on collins...he is one of the most talented musicians, even i am more hackett fan....just listen to brand x and you will se...and his pop music is also i HQ music comper to other crap mady today

  • fatal falses on the guitar... Virtuso (with Sarcazm)

  • Brilliant, he is the continuation of Genesis

  • pefect song for after a huge, bad break up...

  • i love steve. he is the most activ one of the genesis members up today and i would say also the most sucsessfull member.

  • They are so great

  • I love his music and it relax it me

  • Sounds like a great Court of the Crimson King type of song!

  • is there a mellotron in the background when he's singing?

  • he still realy know to make prog

  • Very Pink Floyd-ish

  • @odedka76

I thought it was like a mix of "In the Court of the Crimson King" by King Crimson because of the vocal section after the verses and "Time" by Pink Floyd with the solo's that Hackett plays :)

  • "out of the tunnel's mouth" is a great album !

  • Excellent performance by Steve Hackett and company...Steve has still got "IT"...awesome tune...

    ...thanks for posting.

  • The latest album, Out Of Tunnel's Mouth, where this opens it, is such a killer album! Thumbs up if agree.

  • Sounds like PInk Floyd style.

  • Regardless of opinions, this is good evidence as to why Steve Hackett should never sing lead vocal. As great an innovative guitarist he is....ugh @ his vocals!

  • You are so right it hurts

  • Even Genesis' pop beats most of the stuff on the radio today. If anyone deserves to get rich off their music it's Genesis. They provided tons of quality music over the years, unlike a lot of the manufactured personalities in music today. Many "musicians" today don't even play an instrument.

  • I just love Steve Hacket.

  • awesome guitar solo by Steve Hackett !

  • stop arguing about genesis.. great song, but am i the only one who hears this terrible sounding snare? :D and somebody in the background could not sing^^

  • well said

There are plenty of great Genesis songs after P and S left

  • @MrKnopf we'll have to agree to disagree to disagree on the Collins era Genesis. You only have to listen the solo albums of Collins, Hackett and Gabriel to see where most of the creativity in Genesis came from. Once Collins aligned himself with Memphis soul, although Genesis were massive on a global scale something was missing. I've seen both versions of the band live and I know which version I prefer. I can't agree with you about Invisible Touch, it's just not my bag, nothing personal.

  • @universe54 Actually, that's very true, especially if you continue on to listen to CAS. Most of the creativity in Genesis was Banks.

  • @kamwrites But Steve was, probably, the second major force in those days.

  • @MoonchildMindaugas2 Actually, Steve didn't contribute a lot until just before he left. He was intimidated, if you can believe that. Probably from Tony's fit throwing. LOL! The times he and Banks worked together it was pure magic. Both have similar ideas, just enough to meld and yet different enough to make the music unique. I wish they'd team up.

  • @MoonchildMindaugas2 Truth is, Steve, Peter and Tony all three have a slightly more mystical/unique approach to their writing, and Phil is more grounded. I think Mike is both. You can tell the difference when Peter left, when Steve left, and when Phil had more input. Personally I think Genesis was finding their feet again with CAS. The music was more emotional and almost philosophical, and edgier. Kills me they didn't continue with that line-up. Or with Mike, Tony and Steve. Can you imagine??

  • @kamwrites True. And it could have happened, but Mike wasn't up for it. Steve says he'd do the classic 1971-75 line-up or at least the 1976-77 one, and Tony says he'd do it, but he's unsure about Peter, who he says is difficult to work with because one moment he's up for it, and the next one he isn't. But it was Mike really who opted for the 1978-1995 line-up the most on all occasions. Man, even Ray, who used to say him joining the band was a mistake, now says CAS-era should have lasted longer.

  • @MoonchildMindaugas2 It really should have. As it stands right now I'm listening to CAS more than the other Genesis albums. Peter is impossible to schedule around, they needed to have let that thought go a long time ago. Now Phil says he's done with Genesis, which is depressing.

Tony said in an interview he'd be open to working with Ray again. Makes one question band politics. I bet there's no way Ray would go back to them.

  • @kamwrites Ray is up for it. Just like Steve, he says one thing that hints to that is that he does a number of Genesis covers. ;) I read that in a recent Classic Rock Presents Prog magazine, an issue dedicated to Genesis.

Phil is pretty much done with everything, it's a miracle he did this covers' album.

  • Genesis, never made a classic album after, Wind & Wuthering, the closest they came to it was Duke.

  • Genesis without Steve, ........Rubbish!

  • i love peter gabriel genesis, but people are knocking phill way too hard. genesis remained very progressive after peter left the group. just listen to the "wind and wuthering" and "trick of the tail". even the pop era genesis is still good. "abacab" is a good, solid pop/ prog effort. i noticed that somebody on here called phil collins a "fag", or said that his genesis was the "fag" era? disparaging comments like that are not helpful or cool.

  • So, so boring.

  • What a fantastic music!

  • collins era is mostly fag era.

  • Stevo is the penultimate artist/musician. He always is exploring new directions and makes the music his own. He is adept at any type of music, rock, jazz, classical, prog, country, pop, middle eastern, etc ......someday, he will be appreciated for what he is, a great guitarist who is/was primarily a great songwriter!

  • steve rules

  • Agreewee! after Peter and Steve left.....Genesis is not longer progresive or even good! on some?

  • officer jack wiemart, tenn. state police-keyboards

  • My favorite song. Steve is a great artist.

  • steve hardly ever changes

  • He has made the fatal mistake of employing 'Generic Session Artist' with their 'Generic Session Artist Sound and Performance'. Could have been a wonderful career. Instead a hideous gated drum sound and the cheesiest of cheesy keyboard sounds. Tut tut Steve Hackett.

  • @Penguinarmy69

    wrong

  • The man is a legend, he shouldn't have turned down that invite to appear on 'heartbeat' in 2006

  • in my opinion steve hackett is better on his own he made some of the best music ever in the prog world GO STEVE AND MAY PROG LIVE ON FOREVER

  • phil collins couldnt lick steve hacketts ass......GENESIS WAS NOTHING AFTER HACKETT LEFT

  • @SOUNDCHASERX

    Oi!

Phil may have took the band in a bad direction, but he's a good musician in his own right! Check out Brand X - he's great in that.

  • @SOUNDCHASERX What about Duke? It was their last good album, but what a way to go.

  • Genisis in the later days wanted a sound that was much simpler instead of complicated. Even though much of their progressive sound did travel to the later times, their simple sound actually started a whole new wave of sound-a-like-bands when they became "popular" in the 80's. But some things still held...like Tony Banks broad keyboards. Unfortunately, to me, progressive bands in the 80's weere few and far between. I still wish that Steve held an influence in the band later on, though.

  • this song should be the definition of music... it's simple but somehow complex, it's uplifting, it's well made, it's perfect for me!

  • magic moment with this song yesterday at Québec City......Wow.

Nick Beggs (not on this vidéo) is a fantastic baseman and funny fashion style !!!!!!

  • i would recommend the new album to Hackett fans, needs a few plays though !

  • Steve is a great writer, and creator, but not the best composer. This song is a perfect example of this. He's got some good lines, powerful parts, but he doesn't know how to exactly put them together and what to add to make it the most powerful. That's where Tony's strength was in Genesis. That being said, they needed to use more of Hacketts ideas, coz' they were solid, and if they developed, it would have added such a depth to early Genesis. They all had ego issues. Except Mike Rutherford...

  • Finally got to Steve live last week in NYC. Although it was a short set, I enjoyed it very much. Its got me listening to "Wind & Wuthering" and a few other Hackett influenced Genesis records. I often felt hat Tony was the sound of Genesis, but can clearly see how much Steve brought to the table with his unique guitar sound.

  • the crap vocal isn't steve, it's whoever is singing the harmony part. also: would have been nice if they could have had the guitar in the mix! excellent song (just saw steve play it in boston last night), but a crap recording of it on this vid.

  • There is no Genesis without Peter Gabriel

  • Steve's voice has actually become more polished over the years; this song is not a good example. Overall, he's more comfortable in front of a mike and writes songs that suit his range. Check out his vocals on Wild Orchids, Darktown, and To Watch the Storms. My favorite on the new album has to be Emeralds and Ash--I know there's lots of production involved but...He's fundamentally a great songwriter & has to be the world's most versatile guitarist. We're lucky he's around & creating great sound!

  • xD...hahaha

  • Nice, just wanted bass pedals for a little more chills up the spine low end...but very nice work. Refreshing!

  • Looks like Hackett has aged well. He sucks as a singer, though....he should stick to playing guitar only...that's where his talents are, not as a vocalist.

  • seeing him in the summer and from these videos im very expectant it's the closest you can get too seeing genesis these days

  • I wish someone would tab the solos

  • Go Steve, Go...What a great album....

Does this guy age? Geez, he looks scarcely older than he did 30 years ago!

  • @RonG40 He looked 65 in 1973

  • Front row 1:27 a woman puts her fingers in her ears. Clearly has no taste. :-) An great post 5*****

  • Just watched his show in helsinki with this song and way over 2 hours of back to back songs stretching back from "Firth of fifth" and "Los endos" and forward in his solo career. Worth every euro of 45:-.

Only drummer, saxophon-player and the keyboard player was there from what you see in this concert in Lugano.

  • Great song, and he sings hauntingly well when singing similar to that off the "Hermit."

  • this is co written by Chris Squire

  • anyone know the name of the drummer?

  • That's Gary O'Toole on drums.

  • playback?

  • genesis is great in its every stage. just different, that's all. i love both garbiel's and phil's era genesis.

  • i'll experience him in the 2nd row on feb 6th when he comes to helsinki!!! imo songs like this...well, all songs... are best when you can interact with the singer or guitarist closest possible... the real magic of live performances...ou i'm obviously getting hungry of him...

  • Nice tune by Steve. His singing is certainly better in this one than some others, I have to say.

As to Genesis...while a case could be argued through ABACAB, the band essentially lost its soul in 1977 when Steve left. They were able to weather Peter leaving, but not Steve. They should have renamed the band Cinema Show or something...it was a disgrace. Invisible Suck.

  • 'And then there were three' isn't a bad album and still has some of that early genesis feel.

  • Cool, new music from Steve! I hope he tours the states. If you have not seen him GO!

  • Thanks for posting this. Wonderful song. Saw it performed at Buxton Opera House. What a great concert. Genius.

  • I admire him too much but... Wish he could stop singing.

  • Danny...what else would you expect, from an absolutely, Brilliant musician?

  • Absolutely fantastic song.

  • Pięknie. Bardzo pięknie.Nice. Very beautifully.

  • fantastic. Just ordered the new album. Can't wait

  • ..is Dick Cadbury on bass?? Where's Nick Beggs?

  • And Terry Gregory? The man was primo on the Once Above a Time tour...

  • fantastic steve!!! long hair as the ancient times... :)

  • We play STEVE HACKETT 24/7 click our name!

  • Masterful song but the vocals ruin it for me. Why does Mike Rutherford think he can play guitar and Steve Hackett think he can sing?

  • Dude, you are an Ahole! Any Music by these Masters is a Gift from God! Soon they wont be around KEEP SINGING S.W. and Play guitar M.R. !!!

  • Hey you think this is good?

You should hear it live ... its eerie!

  • wth are you talking about!? hackett plays the so called 6- string- electric-(lead)guitar.

what you mean is the 4- string- electric- bass- guitar.

  • heavy and emotional. and not much of difficult technique, and yet that doesn´t matter in this song

  • Another Masterpiece in songwriting

    an inspiration to all

  • Steve's new CD is fantastic--his best in many years!

  • great new song and the CD is fantastic.......surely he isnt singing live though on the video......lol!

  • This is an awesome tune; too bad the EQ is so off on it. :( I'll definitely look into getting the CD though.

  • awesome song Cannot wait for the new album.

  • What a great new song from Steve...thanks for the post!

  • wat guitar make is that?

  • Its a Feranades sustainer , made for Steve as a custom job . You can buy similar ones in your local guitar shop for about £900

  • 29 oktober 2009 becomes the greatest day of all my life. Steve Hackett on stage in Holland!!!!

  • This is a cool song - awesome guitar-line !

  • Great song, great solos!

  • Was this a 16:9 originally? I think there is a flag you can change to tell youtube to stretch it back

...And THANKS! what a great surprise for my birthday, a new Hackett song!!

  • What a great song! Can't wait for October 5th :) Oh, and does anybody else think that backing part at the beginning sounds like the bit in Supper's Ready between "Willow Farm" and "Apocalypse in 9/8"?

  • Yeah, definetly, that's Hackett's Genesis, the perfect and unique Genesis that never came back ...

  • Couldn't agree more. Once Gabriel and Hackett left Genesis for me was finished. This serves to remind just what a force they were, and what a pale version of a great band Collins and co are

  • I really don't agree! From your point of view it was Gabriel and Hackett who made Genesis. But thats not true. They were part of it, and of course they gave their influence into it, since they are both great artists. But the main composer of Genesis has always been Tony Banks. And he is STILL a part of the band and even the mainstream popstuff from the 80's was on a high level of musical ideas and is not pale at all! Collins+Rutherford are both great musicians too. "We can't dance" is wonderful!

  • That's partly true timonraphel.

On the other hand the loss of Gabriel Hackett left Genesis a pale and often boring shadow of what they had been.

  • I stand by what I said timonraphael. Agreed Tony Banks is the main composer; that said all the playfulness and inventiveness left with Gabriel and Hackett, and the band allowed themselves to be taken over by the ego that is Collins. "I can't dance" was truly dire, and when you think of masterpieces like Supper's Ready, Watcher of the Skies and Firth of Fifth Collins, should be sued for crimes against music. After Gabriel and Hackett left they became a pop band instead of a great progressive band

  • Ok, you don't like pop, that's your thing. But all of them went in this direction, not only Collins. They all changed the way of writing music in the 80s. I love Gabriel and pieces like "Supper's ready" too and I own every Album of the Gabriel-Era. But there is something about Genesis that has never changed, the high level of composing and performing. Listen to "Fading lights" or "Driving the last spike" and tell me what's pale about that!!

  • @timonraphael Fans sould realise the 80 sound of genesis accually started from Gabriel in part as he was one of the frist to use the drum Machine sound on his own album. And led Tony,Phil and Mike to do it as well on theres.

  • @universe54 Thumbs up!

Saw a fairly recent interview where Collins said he considered 'I Can't Dance' one of the 2 or 3 top lyrics he ever wrote! ...Guess the lyric isn't as BAD as the music but... you can't really polish rot.

  • @universe54 What's the big deal about becoming a pop band?! Pop is, to me, the quintessence of music. I like stuff like "Supper's Ready", and Gabriel's awesome as a solo artist, BUT I prefer albums like ,,Invisible Touch" by far over all of their 70ies stuff. What they did in the 70ies is sometimes nice, sometimes good, but they reached sublimeness with ,,Invisible Touch" (which, to me, is one of the best albums of all times).

  • @universe54

yeah.....you do realize the whole reason Hackett left was because he wasn't getting alot of influence on the writing right? Dude got out voted left and right by the other members. hell if Banks and Gabriel had their way After the Ordeal would not have even been on Selling England by the Pound.

  • Comment removed

  • @keithfan8886 Tony was obviously a very domineering personality and didn't allow Steve to have much input. I understand that though as he was instated as a guitarist and not a writer. Though I'd much rather Steve had had more input as his playing on the Genesis stuff imparticular is wonderful.

  • When Steve this piece rang, all the town was thundering! amazing!

  • Anyone know when the new album is suppose to come out?

  • "before Christmas" according to the genesis-movement site. Looking forward to the Anthony Phillips collaboration.

  • Love it! The video is shot in my town :)

  • You are very lucky. Lugano is a fantastic place. I was the drum tech for the show, I definitely want to go back for a holiday

  • Master of Masters, he will always be unique, always making music with strength and deep feeling for connoisseurs, with elaboration and respect for their fans and followeres, old and young, few musicians have earned what Steve has, full respect, from the records he's made to each and every one of the concerts he has given throughout the world, long live Steve Hackett, and long live musicians like him ! I NEED MOOOOO COWBELL BABY ! I mean, I NEED MOOOO MUSIC FROM MISTAA HACKETT BABYYYY !

  • Amazing!

  • Fantastic, take a bow Steve! Great stuff. Can't wait for the new album to come out.

  • Wow - GREAT song. I hope he tours America again soon and looking forward to the next album....nice to see Dik Cadbury again too!

  • soulful, warm-hearted, timeless, charming, breathtaking musicianship!

Long live & prosperous Mr Hackett, keep painting the light!

    Alessio

  • What`s Mr Hack chewing on?

  • LOLZ i`ve downloaded the whole torrents!! AWESOME free dvd in a fantastic quality! And he looks so lovely too in his 59!

Somehowe i don`t think the Lugano crowd`s familiar with Hack`s music.... they didn`t cheer much when he mentions some of his best numbers..
