This quake was magnitude 8.8, which compared to the 7.0 Haitian quake, is more like 90 times stronger than the Haitian quake, as the Richter scale is logarithmic, meaning that every point corresponds to a ten-fold increase in intensity.

If you do the math you'll find that although this quake "appears" to be so much larger, to the residents in Santiago, the quake's perceived strength is about half of what the residents in Port-au-Prince felt in the Haitian earthquake
