I could probably listen to this for the next 6 weeks and still feel deeply moved every single time-- lyrics cut to the bone and guitar makes me bleed from the heart
One of my all time favorite LB/FB live performances...this song in particular inspired a following of LB's career going on 30+ years now...thanks for posting :)
Holy Crap!! That was awesome. Channeling it Baby. Right through his soul and to my ears. Lindsey is in the zone and not even thinkin' about it at solo point.
This is undoubtedly one of Buckingham's greatest efforts, but you have to acknowledge the best rhythm section ever to exist. That includes Pink Floyd, Beatles, Steely Dan. McVie and Fleetwood are complete masters of their trade - McVie always just ahead of the drumming, but combined on virtually every Mac track, it is the bass and drum, which drives everything else. What an awesome combo.
im not a professional guitar player, but can someone post if they know that lindsey not using a pick is widespread or is he just real good, because he sure makes that thing wail
@121126 I wouldn't call it "Widespread" - I mean he's definitely good for the way he plays. He has a folk finger picking style that ususally doesn't get transfered to electric guitar, but since that's all he knew, that's all he's ever played. But there are plenty of non-pick guitarists - Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits) comes to mind, but there's still a difference between Lindsey and all the other finger-picking guitarists - he uses a strumming motion to play just one string, muting the rest.
I am a guitar instructor, and I can say that from a technical standpoint Lindsey Buckingham can play many things that clapton couldn't, particularly when it comes to his picking style. Both are talented, but they also both play in seperate ways.
Not like it matters anyway, this is an excellent song and piece of art.
Lindsey really pulls through on this one. He can literally make the guitar talk and induce feeling into the audience................ One of my all time favorite solos for more than 30 years.................. I have never heard a song so well orchestrated and flow with so much feeling as this one. This song is a pinnacle achievement for mankind, what a awesome gift.......!!!!!!!!
Lindsey really pulls through on this one. He can literally make the guitar talk................ One of my all time favorite solos for more than 30 years.
I heard this song by accident from this album and then I lost the album and couldn't remember the name of the song so I just spent 45 minutes trying to find it. ;))
Lindsey has always had some "intense" guitar solos. I forget what kind of guitar he plays but it puts out a unique sound like no other. "I've always believed that you play to highlight the song, not to highlight the player. The song is all that matters. There two ways you can choose to go. You can try to be someone like Eddie Van Halen, who is a great guitar player, a virtuoso. Yet he doesn't make good records because what he plays is totally lost in the context of this band's music.
See..thats why you will always have guitar gods and people who play guitar. Big difference. As it should be.
You can teach a 9 year old to play guitar but will he grow up to be a Lindsey? Don't know. Hundreds, maybe thousands can 'play' guitar...but only a select few can make it sing for them. So few. They can make the instrument become an extension of their body do to as they will. That is an enlightened musician. That is art. Not just notes.
@netlurker55 Buckingham is really good but I dont think he is one of the best, im sorry. Mark Knopfler. Eric Clapton. Joe Satriani. Carlos Santana. There are a lot of guitarists out there, and as big of a fan as I am of Lindsey Buckingham I wouldnt call him one of the best. He does a lot of basic things.
@eanielsen123 None of those guitarists can touch Buckingham on an acoustic guitar or at travis picking. There is a lot more to playing guitar than playing a fast solo. They all can do things that he can't do, but it works both ways. Let's see any of them play Big Love, let alone sing it while playing it. I personally think Clapton is the king, but I'd never confuse him as somebody who is better than Lindsey at Lindsey's strengths, just like Lindsey can't out Clapton Clapton.
@Maverikk68 That made me piss myself in laughter. Obviously you dont know any of those guitarists. Buckingham is nowhere near their level. And I love Buckingham - I always have, but you sir, are stupid.
@eanielsen123 Retard, I know all of those guitarist and am a professional musician. You obviously don't know anything about the guitar or you wouldn't have disagreed with what I said and would have understood it completely.
@Maverikk68 Fight you devils, I hate peace! All I know is, as a "professional" listener, that Lindsey Graham can f-cking SING! Add to that the guitar. All technical stuff aside, the sound is good.
@Maverikk68 Just because you think youre a professional musician and even if you were that doesnt mean your taste in music is good or that you have some better understanding of what the fuck youre talking about. Its laughable you would say Buckingham is the best guitarist in the world. Take your "pro musician" bullshit, shove it back up your hairy inbox where it came from, and pin it to your fucking prostate.
@GothamBusCompany Lindsey's amazing. only he can play a guitar like that. & yea ur right Christine's voice is much better for backing vocals on this song.
NOTHING IS HOTTER THAN A GUY DOING A SOLO ON GUITAR WHILST GETTING AN ERECTION FROM THE PASSION & INTENSITY HE FEELS TOWARDS THE MUSIC. NOTHING BEATS THAT.
fan fucking tastic, magic fingers 'n all. i hate using a plectrum & how he achieves that crisp, clear auditorium volume without feedback beats me. lovely guy is Mr Buckingham, what a team!
The music of that era created a passionate response in almost everyone who heard it because the artists were so very passionate about their art. It was a miraculous period. To everything there is a season...
@bigredoneder if you think just missing rock and roll is bad try explain to kids at school who the who, john lennon, fleetwood mac and meat loaf are. I had to go through it every day
when I first heard this one on their 1980 live recording I couldn´t believe it. Until then I only knew blues and pop from that outfit, but this was purely good rock in a really epic way! marked the beginning of collecting all records they´d made and this was a good decision!
I also detect the edginess and angst. Part of it may be the timing - 1982 was only 7 years after the song was first released, so whatever inspired it was still somewhat fresh in his mind. PLUS, there's the backing vocal - Christine McVie's voice just works better for this song than Stevie's. There, I said it.
The lyrics are so touching. Not many words but exactly the right ones to make this song so speacial and give this melancholy feeling.....simply WOW!!!!
@BaiserWithStrawberry To me, this is one of the 5 top songs of all time. The agony in his voice and his guitar tear me up every time. How many songs can pull that out of a person EVERY single time? Not many.
@Declipse16 According to Frank Zappa, it's because the cools guys came in. We were better off with the cigar chompers who didn't know what was cool, and took chances...when the "cool guys" came in, and decided THEY knew what was cool, that's when things took a turn. Now the Simon Cowells decide what goes on the radio or gets a million copies pressed....
Good thing we have the internet to kill off an industry not needed anymore, unless they intend to monitor our traffic and sue the living hell out of us there's no way they can keep churning run of the mill crap out the ether without shooting themselves in the foot.
They could step up their game and scout artists with actual talent, or they could just die, the latter is probably better for the smaller artists.
@EnemyOfEldar agreed....no heart in music. The songwriter no longer sings it the way it was meant. Now it's all writers and other people singing someone else's emotions.
@Volvo745T Lindsey always could sing. he and Stevie released an album, i believe, before joining Fleetwood Mac. if i remember right, 'Crystal' and one or two other songs were on this album before being performed by FM. i think the album was called 'Buckingham-Nicks'.
@mattukenobaka lindsey & stevie did have an album titled buckingham nicks--i searched for many years before being lucky enough 2 add it 2 my collection. i ve also seen live versions of rhiannon & monday morning from 74--before joining the mac.
I saw this tour in Oakland CA 3rd row. I am a Stevie fan and had a major crush but I fell in love with Lindsey's awesome ability after seeing it live.. Wow is all I can say. I saw them again in 1997 in San Jose and I also love his Big Love solo!
Brilliant song. His voice is great in this performance. But WTF is that guitar he's using?!? I looks retarded, I'm sorry. other than that, great vid. :)
@TooRollingStoned7195 That would be the Rick Turner Model 1, which at the time, was custom made for Mr. Buckingham and his playing style. Rick Turner made basses for John McVie and Lindsey got a hold of him and asked for a guitar that suits his acoustic finger picking style and that has small and easy to handle. This was the result. So, as retarted as it may appear to your eyes, the sound it belts is insane. Better than any pointy edged mammoth electric guitar I've heard.
Wow isn't Lindsey so hot - I love him singing this version, all the emotions and feelings of the split with Stevie is put into this version. Absolutely fab.
Is there a studio version of this song, i can only find live versions, i'm ashamed to say i'd not heard it until two days ago. Fleetwood can still surprise me after all this time.
Who the fuck would name there son Lindsey ? great guy tho! Maybee he got bullied so concentrated on the guitar?

I saw this tour in Oakland CA 3rd row. I am a Stevie fan and had a major crush but I fell in love with Lindsey's awesome ability after seeing it live.. Wow is all I can say. I saw them again in 1997 in San Jose and I also love his Big Love solo!

@59cva at the time of this concert she was having a minor affair with drummer Mick Fleetwood, believe it or not.

Brilliant song. His voice is great in this performance. But WTF is that guitar he's using?!? I looks retarded, I'm sorry. other than that, great vid. :)
TooRollingStoned7195 1 year ago
@TooRollingStoned7195 That would be the Rick Turner Model 1, which at the time, was custom made for Mr. Buckingham and his playing style. Rick Turner made basses for John McVie and Lindsey got a hold of him and asked for a guitar that suits his acoustic finger picking style and that has small and easy to handle. This was the result. So, as retarted as it may appear to your eyes, the sound it belts is insane. Better than any pointy edged mammoth electric guitar I've heard.

Why is he not acknowledged by the usual suspects as a great electric guitarist? This is rather amazing.
