Does anyone know what kind of microphone that is that Stanley is being recorded with? I understand a lot of the sound is coming from the Fishman BP-100, but I will be recording upright bass soon. This is easily the best sounding recorded bass I've ever heard!
All of this just reminds me sadly of what Jaco could have been! He could have grown up as a mature adult and expanded into so many different avenues. Imagine what Jaco could have been playing now! Great stuff, I love Hiromi!
UPDATE! (re: current tour) Fantastic!! Not only the world-class brilliant Stanley Clarke and Hiromi, but the drummer is the amazing powerhouse Ronald Bruner Jr. with a great Rhodes-style second keyboardist, Rusland Sarota! And not just this smooth acoustic jazz, but the band touring now is comprised of those four (who are on Stanley's new album, released on June 15), playing killer electric fusion as well! Can't wait to see them at The Toronto Jazz Festival in a couple of weeks!!
This is what you call a "supergroup"! I think I'd better go see them, (although Stanley has a different drummer- perhaps Lenny is touring in support of his new killer heavy fusion CD, "Anomaly"), there is another drummer and keyboardist along with Hiromi, of course. They're on tour now, all over the place for months to come. Check Stanley's website.
I bought this album only knowing Stanley and Lenny, rummaging through a record store, hoping to find something incredible. I had no idea how beautiful the interaction between the incredible personalities would be through the sound that they've created together. This has personally made my day. Absolutely incredibly beautiful music, there aren't really words to describe how personal these musicians have gotten with each other.
@5000Flores Met him last week long enough to get an autograph in Toronto, fantastic band with Hiromi, Ronald Bruner, and Ruslan Sirota- Fantastic!! Hiromi is also one of my favorite artists. I got to talk to her for a few minutes, since she was just standing around with a few people near their dressing room/trailers. I suggested she should record something with a Hammond B-3, and she didn't know what I was talking about! They all seem like nice people.
For the record, I'm a Hiromi lover. Anyways, I love how she pronounces "Sakura Sakura" in an American accent. I went to see their show the other day w/ a Japanese friend, and he was confused about the name of the song until I said it to him in the correct pronunciation, lol.
I'm going to see these three tomorrow night! All you Hiromi haters out there just can't deal with your own musical inadequacies, anybody who was tutored by Ahmad Jamal is good in my book (If listening to her playing isn't good enough for you).
It's kind of true that Hiromi tends to overplay a lot at live performances, but she's extremely versatile and has a really nice tough. She goes from extreme to extreme, from very fast to very slow, from really loud to really soft, unlike many other pianists who kind of just stick in the same area and don't move around much. That, and she draws from a lot of other genres, to add to the richness of her style. I like that she isn't just straight up hardcore jazz.
Ive been listening to Stanley since 73-74 and hes my favorite bassist/artist. Ive stayed with all his different musical directions since he left Jazz fusion for more commercial success and popularity. But I must admit Im truly excited about his first and upcoming project on the Heads Up label. Its good to see him return to acoustic Jazz and electric Jazz fusion.
Very nice. I'm a long time Clarke & White fan. Hiromi is new to me as of this video right now. She's amazing. Good stuff!

Looks like a Sennheiser MKH 800 in close, and further out; an AEA A440 active ribbon. Not sure if the SM57 is involved.
