1 byte contains 8 bits so...

100/8=12,5

The Speedtest server you use to check is located in the university, so when you check the speed on the same server it's like transferring throught LAN (100Mbit). Try on another server on speedtest, like London..

Most universities have IMMENSE internet connections as they are usually sat literally right on the backbone. Remember prior to e-commerce, youtube and the other fun stuff, the internet was used primarily as an academic tool.

When I was at uni I had direct access to a 155mbps OC3 line, and that was way back in 1998.

having high speed doesnt necessarily mean that you would get a low ping, at home our wifi connection is about 43mbits w/ 450+ ms of ping...the router is located upstairs with many walls down to my laptop outside (during this test)
