Stunning debut video from a band who always excelled in the video medium. This clip is very surreal and perfectly captures the spirit of the song. I would so love to have a clear copy of it in DVD! What a shame that they never included it on their best-of video collection.
The Rage logo in the bottom left at the start identifies this as being copied from a broadcast on Australian tv. Rage has been the Friday/Saturday night mainstay of Australian rock fans for decades now. They doing amazing compilations of performances whenever and artist tours oz and often have the artist pick their own selection as well. If you like this view the live version off the Whistle Test - fabulous performance.
Thanks for giving us a chance to see this fantastically rare video - I saw them in 1983 and then again in 1987 for their fantastic 'Savage' album - briliant.
Thank you so much for posting this. Now who's got a good copy I wonder? RCA couldn't even be bothered to put anything really exciting in the boxset of reissued albums. This and The Walk video just posted are real gems from that period.
This video was never aired in the UK because of some union laws. It was worked on by some non-union crew in Germany so they barred it's broadcast. I believe it did air much later in Australia as I have a videotape with a station ID from OZ.
I loved both incarnations of the Eurythmics.. the early experimental electronic stuff and the Rock albums like Revenge and Be Yourself Tonight.
(I thought Peace was kinda dull but that's another story)
This video isn't the best thing they ever did, and it's not their catchiest song ever, but they're both fun and they both push the envelope of what was going on at the time.
i like their wierd experimental stuff best.(like Invisible hands from The walk 12 inch, and step on the beast..) Just got The Catch - Borderline last year, and was surprised how much is sounded like something else.but annoyingly now i cant remember what...it will come back to me.long train running maybe..
In the Garden in some ways is less the first Eurythmics album than the final album by the Tourists. The other single from the album 'Belinda' (which didn't even chart) could have easily have been a B-side to the Tourists' 1979 hit, 'Blind Among the Flowers' (qv)
You said it...when I heard Savage and singles like I Love to (Listen to Beethhoven) in 88 I thought, aha! they've seen the error of the peroxide blonde, leather trenchcoat-wearing guitar cack of Revenge (a deeply rubbish album). But the thoughtful electro-soul of Sweet Dreams got the briefest of reprieves alas...
Yes I agree, I was SOO dissappointed when Eurythmics seemed to change direction after the For the love of Big Brother album. When Be Yourself Tonight came out, the artwork was even crap, a tv screen picture??why!! oh i was so annoyed, there was a brief moment of joy when Savage came out then back to rocky guitar driven shit for We too are one..
This was apparently banned over some legal technicality...non union extras appeared in the video, or something along those lines. Probably a factor in it only reaching No 63 in 1981. In the Garden is a great Krautrock-influenced New Wave album, streets ahead of all that Sisters Doin it for Themselves/Thorn in My Side malarky
That's excactly why I decided to post this video. Waited for 20 years and then spent just one day Googling the internet and voila... It's a bloody shame that it has never been broedcasted or has appeared on any compilation of Eurythmics vids. Enjoy!
Arguably their best song ...
