  • He is the Rake.

  • great tune, sticks in ya head

  • this song is pretty hardcore

  • this is my favorite song in the album. It's so sublimely compelling. I just love it.

  • i own this album on vinyl

  • great tune, dark but catchy

  • This whole album plays like an opera.

  • Video for Decemberists shot in January. I am disappoint.

  • this shit was in twilight?......no respect

  • great song and great video

  • I didn't know snow made New York look so pretty...I just assumed it would make it gross and wet. I've only been there once and it was in July. All hot and humid and icky.

  • This video was just added to a music playlist at JustPlay.fm

  • Yeah the people who make crap like twikight sure know how to gay things up but good. I have been a fan of all things werewolf for like ever.... twilight made it dirty for me to even admit it.

  • This song is always playing in Casey Anthony's head.

    Too soon?

    I'm sorry. :C

  • crazy lyrics

  • wow you're all fucking idiots.. rake is another word for an unfaithful/promiscuous person. it's like 'hoe'. it's not a literal rake and it's not the name of some conceptual enemy..

  • @boyeatworld a "rake" also referred to someone who worked in the sewers, literally raking the filth and refuse that clogged up the waterways beneath the city.

  • It's a Nice song :D

I hope you guys can to come soon to LatinAmerica

    Good vibes !

  • It's a very artsy video, I like it.

  • I'm sorry...I must have missed something...twilight?

  • Humble narrator? Singin' in the rain! :D

  • good idea's.

but guy, please buy a camcorder!

  • sorry but this is just random

  • good video

  • I like the footage a lot, kudos on an intersting video. Makes me want to wander my city with a camera.

  • This is so generic...

  • Love this song..

  • Every time I hear this song, I get shades of a Clockwork Orange. Just the way it's written, I guess... It kinda creeps me out.

  • @HannahsVideos36 Well, it does mention "your humble narrator"

  • i love this song, lyrics are sketchy as hell tho lmao

  • Check out my cover of this song on my channel

  • Not a fan of this song. Probably the weakest link on the hazards of love

  • great job with the song and video.

  • flipping awesome song!!!

  • Awesome video...goes to show that you don't always have to literally show what's going on in the song or have the band stand there and play (awkward!). great job!

  • So it may be. but its also telling a story and was beautifully written to show just how distugusting the Rake himself was. so before condeming others for liking how the song was made you should know how others are actually percieving it. i really doubt they like it cuz it is about killing the children. just cuz someone likes the sound of the instruments or the way the voice is sung doesnt mean lyrically the believe the killing to be a good thing.

  • @XOTwilightWoodsXO Listen to the whole album. It tells a bloody story.

  • Oh, but I DID listen to the lyrics...

  • @XOTwilightWoodsXO I have listened to the lyrics and I love this song. You have a small mind.

  • @XOTwilightWoodsXO It's a concept album, and the Rake is one of the villains. Maybe you should listen to the album, yes?

  • @JoellyMoley How about, no? retard

  • @XOTwilightWoodsXO Dude, you obviously don't know what a rake is. If it's a story about a rake, it's just never going to end well.

  • great song. love this

  • I love how the kids come back and make him go insane revenge is always good...

  • @MrKookooforcocopuffs ummm they don't

  • @mmkkllppoo they do in Hazards of love 3.....

  • @mmkkllppoo my apologies they certainly do

  • nice hipster pants, bro.

  • very cool video.

    very cool shots.

    a lot of movement though.

    but still good.

  • i saw the decemberists live yesterday and they played this song, and it was totally amazing - was definitely a crowd pleaser! i heart them so much! :D

  • brilliant song

  • I thought that at least some of this was shot in Luna Park, near Coney Island in NYC. But I didn't figure out Alphabet City; I really don't hang out there enough.

  • Where is this shot?

  • @PregnantTurtleFish All around the East Village and Alphabet City in New York.

  • Oh, wow, good job.

  • cool video bro

  • lyrics are crazy but all in all great song

  • It's a good song, but the mixing needs some work--the sound comes across muddy in spots.

  • I very much like how you used the footage and would have loved to see more panning shots as you seem to be good at them. I would suggest a bit more cuts on the beats, what was there was excellent! You found some great little places to film and while the video overall doesn't go with the song, it does go with the overall feel of the band, very eclectic and chaotic while being quite artistic. Great job!

  • this song is fucking awesome

  • very cool video

  • hes killing kids

  • He's not killing his wives, he's killing his children. His wife died in childbirth with their fourth baby. So he kills his three first children so he could live a new life. If you listen to The Hazards of Love 3, his kids call him "father" when they come back from the dead.

That being said, this song is amazing, even if it is a little grim.

  • one of his kid's died at birth, and it killed his wife too. he then pretty much went insane and killed all of his kids.

  • i really liked the song until i listened to the lyrics...

  • It's just part of the story, man. It's not like they're condoning killing children. It's from the point of view of the "bad guy."

  • Oh. That's true. I guess I didn't think about that.

  • i love the song n the story is crazy!

  • Type better.

  • These lyrics are disturbing. Haha. But I love the song.

  • The footage wasn't shot with the song in mind - I just went out one day and filmed some things. The song had just been released, so I decided it would be fun to put some footage to.

  • Was the place with the teddy bears a cemetery? It looked like it.

  • @Foxlover666 No, it was this weird community garden I found in my neighborhood. It looked like one though.

  • Yeah, I like a good horror film, I mean the lyrics are disturbing. Parents killing their children is never ok to me. If you think it's retarded don't listen to it.

  • who cares? it's a good vid and song.

  • Charlotte i buried after feeding her foxglove, Dawn was easy, she was drowned in the bath, burned his body for incurring my wrath...cool lyrics. Great song!

  • That is a really good song, y'know. Don't get the clip though!

  • Yah, I just went out one day and got a lot of footage, and when I got around to editing it I needed a song. The Rake's Song had just been released, so it seemed like a good choice!

  • Oh I see.

  • Fuck Twilight and it's sparkly mormon-spawned vampires. This song is great and it would be a shame to see it shoveled into a trough of Hollywood shit for teenage girls.

  • why are people talking about twilight when this is a : the decemberists" vid?

  • why are you people talking about twilight when its a "the decemberists" vid?

  • lol you realize I said that because of the creepiness of the this song reminded me of the suckiness of twilight. Not because I like it. Eeww.

  • fuck twilight

  • @dsghoul why are you guys even talking about twilight!? this video has absolutely NOTHING to do with twilight so why even bother saying you hate it do that on a twilight video! or something just not here..

  • You lose.

  • ayyy, i live over there. amazing song though. amazing ALBUM, more like

  • How can anyone dislike the Hazards of Love? I still get chills from the revenge song, considering the fact that the Rake said he wasn't haunted. Jokes on you Rake!

  • Well, disregarding that you spoiled it for me, does the album tell a continuous story? This is the only song I've heard from it.

  • Yeah its about a guy and a girl that fall in love and there are some songs that only the girl sings about her love for the guy and this one is a bit past the middle about how after they have kids the wife dies and he didn't want the kids so he kills them because he only wants to be single again (kinda cruel) and yeah its a really good album you should listen to it.

  • You're close. The album is a love story between William and a woman. This song is about The Rake, a person whom William's mother hires to steal the woman and defile her. This song describes the awful man who was hired for the job, hence the fact that he'd kill his own children. It's a great song!

  • Yeah! thats it! and the womens name is Margaret

  • my teacher said that in latin or something like that, a rake is a jackass, not the animal

  • A "Rake" is an immoral man.

  • basicaly an insane jackass

  • Yes, thank God someone got it. Ha ha, it would be a completely different story if William was the Rake.

  • The mother did not hire him. He just so happened to be kid napping her and the mother helped him cross the river.

  • No, that's not what happens. The rake is this other dude- he's the one that kills his kids. Then he kidnaps Margaret- the one the main guy loves.

  • No, if you're talkin about dsghoul's comment, that just what this song is about.

  • Best Starbucks Pick of the Week evar.

  • Love your songs

  • god this song was amazing live

  • this is one of my all-time favorite decemberists songs. colin is so hot! :)

  • i agree.. haha. hes got this thing about him... i saw them live at bonnaroo... i wanted to kidnap him.

  • awesome band, gonna go see em tomorrow

  • This song is very nice. Some of it was shown in my math class today. I had previous information about this band, and I felt like listening to this song. The first time I heard The Decemberists is something I will thank Stephen Colbert for.

  • i love this song. its so dark, and at the same time i just wanna sing and dance along

  • I don't think Burgess coined the "your humble narrator" thing. I think it goes back to Victorian times at least.

  • Edward Gorey would also be proud! Amazing!

  • Brilliant song.

  • The Official Song of Baby Shakers everywhere!

  • Great song, amazingly twisted lyrics set to such an upbeat happy tune! makes me feel all warm and happy whenever i listen to it.

  • Maybe ive let the lyrics rub off on the tune too much, but it seems really sinister to me...

  • well yes, it really does have quite an awful message to it, but personally i find it compleatly overshadowed by the way the band can pair it with a deceptively innocent tune.

  • "Your Humble Narrator" Burgess and Kubrick would be proud

  • Now, the thought of Alex with children-- *that's* scary.

  • Real horrorshow

  • This is there fourth album. The first three were the best novels I've ever listened to. Music can be more than a 3 minute ditty!! Love these guys.

  • Thought it was their fifth, no? Castaways, Her Majesty, Picaresque, Crane Wife, now Hazards? Or is one of those an EP in disguise?

  • "Alright! Alright! Alright!!!!!"

  • i heard this last night on radio one and had to find out who they were, this song is just so different and haunting but great!

  • awesome song

  • I've had this damned song in my head all day XD

    Good song

  • Accidentally gave you two stars while trying to press pause! Sorry.

  • You see, simplicity is where it's at.

  • I liked the music without sussing the lyrics. The girlfriend hates this song.

    Now I know why!

  • You need to put the song in the context of the album. If you dont, you wont get it.

  • Disturbingly good lyrics. Was never a fan 'til I heard this song.

  • fuckin amazing.

    amazing band

  • How incredibly eloquent. How do you mean? The tune's catchy and upbeat, the lyrics are intense and dark, and I find it to be one of the most fun songs on the album.

  • holy shit amzing song. so heavy

  • I like the way the Decemberists can weave the fanciful storytelling of Folk with the newness (for lack of a better word...) of Indie and Rock in general.

Listening to the lyrics, it's a pretty fucked up song, actually. ;-P

  • NPR's All Songs Considered has a podcast of them preforming the whole album live. Its pretty amazing. The album strings all the songs into one long, epic story.

  • Yeh--I already have the album (downloaded it semi-illegally--I'm going to buy it once it comes out), and it's great. Definitely a worthy album after the awesomeness of Crane Wife.

  • semi-illegally?

  • 1st learened of this song on radio-freggin 1 cool just thought u should now colinn murray show

  • First heard this on Colin Murrays show last night, amazing song.

  • the song is great and this was the first youtube video of it I found with moving pictures so it gets 5 stars even though there is repeated footage of someone's shoe

  • Alright :)

  • loving it... even loving the song and you know how much i dislike the decemberists... you were making this video the same day i was chilling in shorts and flipflops. gotta love Santa Cruz.

  • Amy made a music video!!

This is amazing! I love how well it's timed with the music. That mannequin is quite terrifying. And I'm jealous of the snow. Seriously. Snow?! That's not right! It's January! It's supposed to be 60 degrees out!
