Winegar Joe!!!! Not just Elkie Brooks who nails it, just listen to the bass lines and that slide guitar. Just so good! And if this is 1974 then they were just weeks from splitting up and must have know that Robert Palmer was going to get the break and not them....troopers or what?!
@jayrockwell33 the fake music instillation manufactured 'phenomenon' absolute and complete bullshit that passes for music, these days. some kids don't even know of any music further back than 5 years for instance. just **** alll the fake pointless shite out there. this song this track in particular, she had balls, the band was ok sure, but the tune - so good and she WAILS IT. bieber would cry if he knew.
I saw Vinegar Joe with Elkie, i think at the Roundhouse, not sure, i remember a long runway into the audience, must have been about 1973, I remember her running down the runway in a tiny black miniskirt. I thought she was top, so much charisma + amazing voice and I was hooked.
Yes I agree that this band was one of the best in that time, and Elkie with her fantastic and powerful voice, but... still... really not sure if this performance was the best they did..
@zinesilol88 No, it should not. I didn't know him personally. The appreciation of a media personality is not basically different whether someone is still alive or not, since it's only virtual anyway.
i love this gal. i once had a pic of her wearing a light green see-through swim suit (or short body stocking or whatever it was) and good old elkie wasn't shy on letting us see her black pubes and tits through it!. i've tried all over the net to find that pic and had no luck. anyone know where i can download it?
@nuipret I remember it too- a body stocking. It was in one of the tabloids around 1975. If you find it please send it on. She's possibly the best female singer this country has produced. I wish you well-being and peace.
@gnomely1 yeah man, i'll surely send you a copy or link to elkie's pic. i never give up on anything so i WILL find it eventually. when i do you'll be the first to know mate. good health and happiness
What a great band. All concerned on top form. I've just read a 1972 interview with Pete Gage. He had a pleasantly philosophical and far-seeing outlook. Thanks for putting this on, bandbase2.
I can appreciate the fact that most here have fond memories of VJ and Elkie, but Palmer is by far the best vocalist in this band, and Elkie isn't having a particularly good day here. Lot of shrillness and dodgy notes.
It's not meant to be a negative comment about Elkie, just about that stage in her career when she did a lot of boring MOR stuff. In the early 1970s she was arguably the best live female rock singer this country ever produced, and then all those "grown up" songs like Pearl's a SInger. Let's say she didn't look like her mother, but did look more mature!
Point taken. Anyway, if an artist is great even for a while then that's enough. The Stones' last great album (Exile on Main Street) was nearly 40 years ago, and no point complaining. Macca after the Beatles was uninspired, ditto
@zinesilol88 I obviously didn't express myself well. I agree with drwinkle101: In Vinegar Joe, she was electrifying, but the move to MOR was, in my opinion, a great waste of her talent. The voice is still there, it's the material that I found so disappointing at the gig - over 30 years ago!
This site lets us revisit the good times. And discuss them.
@SNST2 Elkie had to pay bills !!! so 'Pearls" and all her other hits helped. Her heart is still in rock, but she also has to please the people you bough her music.I don't think the U.K know how to handle strong women in rock. Elkie should have left the U.K. . Brings back so many memories,as a teenager saw them loads at St.Albans civic..people never believe me when i tell them how good Elkie was and still is,,Robert Palmer R.I.P
Can't you accept that others don't agree with you? "negative comments for the sake of it". ?? No, it's called having an opinion. I really find this singer a fake in the way she sings and performs. Yes, she makes a lot of noise in the right places, but there's just something forced and artificial about her performances. But I also think what she does here is far better than the solo career, MOR, "Pearl's a Swinger" stuff. But I guess money talks.
Elkie is highly regarded by fellow musicians, those that understand what GREAT singing is. Looking at YOUR chanel you are seriously lacking in such knowledge. it's "SINGER" you are so NOT clever.
Clearly the ways of the English are unknown to you. People often 'pun' (for want of a better word) on song titles or alter them to play around. Perhaps I should have said "Pearl's a Minger"?? - but that would be a bit rude, and I leave that to you, going on some of comments you leave about women on Youtube.
Odd too, how both you and bluetit have the same hatred of Lindsey de Paul and like to diss a female singer...
Fartart, I write academic books on music history. Youtube is an amazing resource - stuff gets book marked for all kinds of reasons. The Andrews Sisters, like 'em or loathe 'em, marked a paradigm shift in women's relationship to the music industry. Maybe you could give them a look and try and understand history, and what their appeal was at the time?
Aliase's ???? You are somewhat living in a fantasy world. Academic book's on music history. When do you find time to write, you spend sooooo much time on youtube. Beside's, academic's in the world of music have alway's had positive thing's to say ,re. Elkie Brooks. Not believing this one shattergirl. Leave it there.
Try this as an exercise. Watch a Youtube vid entitled "Christina Aquilera vs the Andrews Sisters'. Then use it as a basis to write 2000 words on women and 'Retro' in the music industry'. Extra points for relating it to the history of women's rights in the US. More points if you can bring in irony and/or dialectic.
By the way, I don't care much for them, but my personal tastes have no place in my academic writing. So Christina, The Andrews Sisters and Elkie are safe.
Just to quote a respected music critic , Robin Denselow. The Guardian. 2005. Elkie Brooks is still one of the GREAT British voice's This man KNOW'S what he is talking about.
I saw Vinegar Joe at the West Runton Pavillion, Norfolk in 1973 (Six Star Geberal). A very special night. Part of the way through they took a break, Elkie was leaning on the mic and looked at the bar at the side of the hall and said, "Hey Mr Barman, if you love me so much, where's my vodka and tonic". 10 seconds later he vaulted over the bar and climbed up on to the stage with it and she gave him a kiss and sent him on his way. Never forget it,
I wouldn't actually have minded being about 6-8 years older than I am to have seen them live. I have the CD's but I understand they were a hell of a band live. Thanks for your memories - Miss B used to show her knickers as well I believe if asked at VJ concerts.
I think I was lucky to see a memorable show that night, and yes I am one of those sad guys (just) over 50 but I still play bass and acoustic in bars for fun and it is always a buzz.. Elkie is fabulous at working the crowd, I have nothing but awe for people who actually make a career out of rock n' roll and keep us inspired.
Pavilion, West Runton! Wow that brings back memories of old 3 tonner tours of the 70s. W Runton was just one of the venues on those tours alon with Retford Porterhouse etc. Thanks for the memory.
The Pavillion was one of those classic old dance halls, I have no idea if it still exists. I have had some great nights there as well as rubbish ones, including when my band of teenagers played as the back-up in front of about 20 people one Christmas Eve. Who were you with?
shuttergirlUK You amke negative comment's about Elkie Brooks, yet your taste in music is , wait for it.... "The Andrew Sisters"I am sooooo glad you DON'T like Elkie. her vocal skill's are beyond you comprehension.
Oh, and by the way bluetit1991, here is a quote you posted on a Youtube vid by Lindsey de Paul: "She is an O.A.P. now, terrible singer."
While I have no interest in the singer, it would seem very hypocritical to write the stuff you do about me "at it again, leaving negative comments for the sake of it"... Or is that too much of a brain cell leap for you to see?
Why do I have a memory of discussing the musical virtues of Vinegar joe and Elkie Brooks with my pal Robbie Nicholls the last time I saw him was in 1967 have I had a time slip or was vinegar joe/Elkie Brooks around in the earlier 60's great music then and she is still great.
wasn´t it a great voice. Don´t look at her (she looks great), just listen to her voice and surch for other videos on YT with Elkie. Where ist the "wiskey (in the jar"...`Thin Lizzy´). Great times, the old times - or not?
Sweeeeeet! This is from a fine Seventies German TV show, "Musikladen" (which translates as "Music Store"). And that was Uschi Nerke introducing the band, and Manfred Sexauer's voice at the end. Thanks for the memories!
sorry, horny woman. he's so fine. don't think much of Elkie's dress though, she looks like a whore. a fit whore though. i would. NOTTTT!!!haahahahaha yey!!
so does anyone else think that david duchovny should get his hesh cut? xxxxxxxxxxxxx
A real live band that can cook!! Thats how you should sound live and if not stay in the garage to practice some more. Nowadays everybody wants to be a star before they know how to play. Thats why MTV sucks. And Hip Hop
didn't help with its lame shit! Thanks for posting.
Don't think much of it... It is a pity, YouTube did not exist 30 years earlier...
I have to share another memory at this occasion: When I presented the three VJ-LPs, still in cellophane, to the guy at the cash desk of a (too) huge record shop, he almost fell over: "Where did you find those?"
This track was one of the songs played on Alan Freemans last Saturday radio show in the late 70's. Know as a 'Tony Wilson Recreation'(the shows producer)it is just fantastic. I taped the show and the recording is a treasuerd possession! If anyone can advise how to post the recording I will gladly do so.
I agree - Palmer is totally eclipsed by Elkie. She's a real rock'n roll gal. Check out the June 2007 interview as well; she looks (to me) as good at 62 as she did whenever this was recorded. What a talented lady, and an unspoiled, down-to-earth normal person as well. Long may she continue.
Oh, and yes, that is definitely Basil Fawlty moonlighting on bass. Wonder if Cybil knows he's doing that....?
I totally agree with you. I went to see her in concert this year. What a concert, no big production, not needed !! ELKIE's vocal ability is more than enough, a great singer.
@localhost123 By the time she dipped her toe into rock with Vinegar Joe, Elkie, with her trained voice, had years of experience as a jazz singer. VJ was meant to showcase Palmer and Elkie, the tough, thoroughgoing pro, couldn't help dominating the manufactured creature that Palmer, for all his gifts, was. I think that was her unpardonable sin as far as the industry was concerned. I don't care for her MOR material either but I admire her talent, stamina and professionalism.
@ignimbrite1 Elkie in V.J. was a fantastic, I am too young to have been able to have seen them live. But looking at the suff here, Elkie WAS "Vinegar Joe" .
Yes, and if you think it a great shame that Elkie gave up raunchy blues rock for MOR, it's even more so when you take in the overall quality of this band and its songs. They should have gone all out to break America from the start.
Wonderful piece of music from 1973! It's a pity that Vinegar Joe is such a forgotten band! And the late great Robert Palmer - absolutely "cool"! On the left in the video on "bottleneck"-guitar: Elkies ex-husband Pete Gage.
DAYUM!!! I wonder why Elkie Brooks never got big in the United States. She definitely has more chops than Pat Benatar and she would have been promoted as Britain's Janice Joplin.
Long story made short - Elkie didn't get promoted in the USA by A&M which annoys her to this day. Vinegar Joe undiscovered well lots of reasons I guess they had huge critical aclaim but could not transfer that to record sales also some diputes within the band + VJ wasa really a rehersal band for Robert Palmer but nobody told EB peter gage and the others
I'm a huge RP fan and love love love seeing these older clips. Gotta agree with others that current female singers just don't have the same presence as Elkie.
Great live band - and such a great singer. Very sexy too!

Shattergirl , funny me I made a punHA,HA,HA,
You are soooo delusional!!!!

Here's another quote you left for someone else on Youtube - like Bluetit, about Lindsey de Paul: "You must have a sad life !!! She is CRAP!!!!"
All you can do is insult people who dare to have a different opinion to you. You must be so insecure.
BTW I leave the delusional bit to men who have to resort to aliases, and are actually 50+ guys from Dublin who lie about their age...

Shattergirl , not only are you delusional , but really misiformed and VERY STRANGE.

RichardZombie 2 years ago 2
I just love guys (just over 50) that still take pleasure in playing guitar in bars.
If you ever come to Holland, please sent me a message...

Pavilion, West Runton! Wow that brings back memories of old 3 tonner tours of the 70s. W Runton was just one of the venues on those tours alon with Retford Porterhouse etc. Thanks for the memory.
avroflier 2 years ago

Sweeeeeet! This is from a fine Seventies German TV show, "Musikladen" (which translates as "Music Store"). And that was Uschi Nerke introducing the band, and Manfred Sexauer's voice at the end. Thanks for the memories!

X599 3 years ago
This track was one of the songs played on Alan Freemans last Saturday radio show in the late 70's. Know as a 'Tony Wilson Recreation'(the shows producer)it is just fantastic. I taped the show and the recording is a treasuerd possession! If anyone can advise how to post the recording I will gladly do so.
Thanks for sharing this Bandbox2.

Winnegah Joe! Love the closing remark!
Fantastic. Why they didn't achieve supergroup status is beyond me. Chemistry? Palmer's need to be front and centre? I wonder.
canadianroot 4 years ago
They shared lead vocals. Palmer did have his time center stage. Elkie's vocals were dynamic.
fiona1580 4 years ago
he sure did.
saw him twice in toronto over the years.
brilliant artist, died too young.
canadianroot 4 years ago
Elkie once said, Vinegar Joe was just a training ground for Robert Palmer. He had in mind going solo, long before the final break-up.
In my opinion, he "looks" a little pale beside HER.
X599 3 years ago
like a honky man.
he looks a bit disinterested as well. not that he was ever the king of emoting.
saw him twice in toronto, both incredible shows.
am i the only one who thinks the bass player looks like john cleese?
:)
canadianroot 3 years ago
I agree - Palmer is totally eclipsed by Elkie. She's a real rock'n roll gal. Check out the June 2007 interview as well; she looks (to me) as good at 62 as she did whenever this was recorded. What a talented lady, and an unspoiled, down-to-earth normal person as well. Long may she continue.
Oh, and yes, that is definitely Basil Fawlty moonlighting on bass. Wonder if Cybil knows he's doing that....?
localhost123 3 years ago
I totally agree with you. I went to see her in concert this year. What a concert, no big production, not needed !! ELKIE's vocal ability is more than enough, a great singer.
slickwillie1947 3 years ago
@localhost123 By the time she dipped her toe into rock with Vinegar Joe, Elkie, with her trained voice, had years of experience as a jazz singer. VJ was meant to showcase Palmer and Elkie, the tough, thoroughgoing pro, couldn't help dominating the manufactured creature that Palmer, for all his gifts, was. I think that was her unpardonable sin as far as the industry was concerned. I don't care for her MOR material either but I admire her talent, stamina and professionalism.
ignimbrite1 1 year ago
@ignimbrite1 Elkie in V.J. was a fantastic, I am too young to have been able to have seen them live. But looking at the suff here, Elkie WAS "Vinegar Joe" .
zinesilol88 1 year ago
@ignimbrite1
Yes, and if you think it a great shame that Elkie gave up raunchy blues rock for MOR, it's even more so when you take in the overall quality of this band and its songs. They should have gone all out to break America from the start.
Drblooter99 1 year ago
Yes I totally agree, he does look a little pale beside HER!!!
zinesilol88 3 years ago
Wonderful piece of music from 1973! It's a pity that Vinegar Joe is such a forgotten band! And the late great Robert Palmer - absolutely "cool"! On the left in the video on "bottleneck"-guitar: Elkies ex-husband Pete Gage.

DAYUM!!! I wonder why Elkie Brooks never got big in the United States. She definitely has more chops than Pat Benatar and she would have been promoted as Britain's Janice Joplin.
Sargebri 4 years ago 2
Good comment. Elkie was considered Europes answer to Janis Joplin. I guess it was down to record co. and management
fiona1580 4 years ago
Long story made short - Elkie didn't get promoted in the USA by A&M which annoys her to this day. Vinegar Joe undiscovered well lots of reasons I guess they had huge critical aclaim but could not transfer that to record sales also some diputes within the band + VJ wasa really a rehersal band for Robert Palmer but nobody told EB peter gage and the others
