He's going against his original orchestration. I remember reading that originally this song was supposed to have a bunch of other instruments and parts, but after listening to it, John thought there was too much going on with the song and cut it down to the vocal part, of which there was enough going on with the vocal parts to carry the melody and the song. Really cool. I just love the a capella version, but John's a musician; he makes every version sound good.
