@oldcremona Thanks very much! I really enjoy playing this tune. There's something very delightful about it, Gilbert and Sullivan at their best. And luckily for me, it works rather well as a solo guitar piece.
@gutplucker Thanks very much. Yes, very catchy and it's fun the way it's structured - each verse grows out of the one before with a little bit being added to each verse. I'm basically following the melody. I could probably do with a more interesting bass line, but that's for later ;o) Of all the songs by G&S this is probably one of those most suited to a solo guitar arrangement, but it would be better as a duet.
A rather dreary interpretation. The full song is actually sung as a comic "dancing farce" in the first act of TYOTG. Jack only sings a mournful verse in the finale when he loses Elsie.
Thank you. I saw Yomen of the Guard when I was about 10 years old. I never forgot this song. Thank you - so so beautiful.... I always imagined it more like you have arranged it then as I saw it sung on stage.
Thanks. This is the only one of this period or by G&S. I've posted versions of Singing in the rain, Fly me to the moon and some old blues songs. I'm not sure what's coming next.
One of the most beautiful versions of this song I've ever heard. Your finger-picing guitar as magnificent, as is your understated voice. Thanks so much for giving such wonderfuyl life to this magnificent song.
Thank you very much, I'm glad you like it. It's fun doing songs that are not often heard on a guitar and which really can work so well - really needs the two voices, but ...
Oh yes, I have my share of memories that are just like that. Specifically, it was my grandmother who loved the music, and preferred thinking it was still 1850. I do miss the woman.
I think that those are the memories which ultimately make you stronger and richer, and which, after the sadness has dissipated, bring only joy and feeling of what is valuable and decent in life.
Thank you very much for your kind comment. I've always loved this song. It has a special meaning for me as well because the only music my father would listen to was Gilbert and Sullivan, so the association with him is very strong.
I come back to this video every now and then, to refresh myself artistically and emotionally. I just love how you express yourself with the song.
